Title: Holiday Party
Post by: Soylent Yellow on October 29, 2008, 02:12:54 PM
Is there any interest in having a holiday party?  If so, any suggestions, offers, or input?

I like the idea of a holiday party.  My house is a bit small, or I would offer to host.  But, if nothing better comes along, we can have it at my place (San Diego, near Poway).

In past years there was talk of meeting at some centally located restaurant, or a park or campground. We could even combine it with a short run, so that we are out of the trucks and socializing by lunch time. Someplace with some facilities would be nice, to encourage spouses and kids etc. that might not otherwise attend.

A few years ago we had the party at a business location, on a Sunday. That worked well because we had the streets to ourselves, no parking problems, and lots of space. That particular spot is no longer available, but maybe we can find something similar.

As much as I hate to drive there, someplace around Riverside would probably be pretty centrally located for the club. Does anyone know of a spot around there that might work? But then again, Mitch has a pool at his house.

I've got a fair sized house in Capistrano Beach.  Have you guys done Christmas parties in the past?  If so, how many people have turned out for it?

I think it should be done in a public area where we can see all our rigs and BBQ.

Anyone know of any good parks?

There's a place in Capistrano Beach that used to be called "Hole in the fence beach."  Obviously, it at the beach but it's got lots of fire pits and parking right next to the pits.  It's a part of Dohney State Park.  It's open until 10 pm for most of the year.  I think parking is about $8.

How about Fiesta Island by Mission Bay? Plenty of room to park the trucks next to the waters and fire pits galore... best of all... free parking!

You can bring a kayak, jetski, etc. and play volleyball and what not...

Is there going to be a Holiday Party?
Title: Re: Holiday Party
Post by: Soylent Yellow on December 04, 2008, 08:51:39 PM
Ok, unless someone is willing to organize something else, the holiday party will be at my house on December 13th, that is a Saturday, a week from this Saturday.  It will be pot luck so post up what you're bringing.  If time and weather permit, a night run to Joshua Tree NP via Berdoo Canyon could be in the offering.  All I ask is no alcohol please.  BTW, Dan, this is not "clothing optional."

I would like to applaud Mitch for stepping up to host this event and also say that due to the severe constraints placed upon its attendees I will not be able to join the other club members for this joyous celebration.  I will be attending a clothing optional gig at my boss's house instead.

Quinn and Onewaysoldier,
I am going to be working that day and night so if you guys attend this, could you please take a couple of stock rack crossbars I have over to Mitch? I would really appreciate it. I live in Dana Point and work at the Doubletree hotel across from Doheny camp grounds so I am not far from you guys. I could drop them off at your place or you could swing by the hotel and get them from me. Either way is good for me.

Mitch, do you need any of the plastic feet pads off my old rack? I could send those over as well. I know they can break sometimes from garage door contact.

I am going to try and go to the Christmas party.  As it stands no schedule conflicts.

I'd be happy to take the crossbars up there for you.  I'll shoot you a PM and we'll arrange some sort of pick up.

Mitch, do you want me to bring anything?  Would it be alright if I brought my younger brother and co-driver along with me?

1PM sounds good to me, that will give me enough time to take the scenic route through Santa Ysabel so I can stop at the Julian Pie Company.  I'll bring fresh apple pies.

If anyone in San Diego wants to caravan let me know.

. . . .  More apple pie Frank?  Do you have something going on with the apple pie lady?

Well Mitch, Heather was browsing the Internet while I was cooking dinner tonight.  For some reason she is now suggesting that I bring something else to the party. . . said something about being tired of apple pie, and wanting to take an alternate route to Indio. I didn't think she checked this site, but now I'm guessing she saw your comment about the apple pie lady.

Looks like I'll be bringing an Italian appetizer tray of some sort, maybe an assortment of salami, cheese, olives, etc.

And my lovely wife, of course.

Hmmm. Mitch's yellow X will be hard to miss outside the Julian Pie Company. I'm thinking that he WON'T try to move in on Frank's action. Although, who can be sure? I mean check her out, she can't be a day over 96!  :o

Dude, that old chick is actually a dude.  And I didn't intentionally rat anybody out.  If Frank was getting some Julian Pie Co. action on the side he should have said something so I could keep it on the down low.  Marty, I increased you Karma by one.

No, I don't live there.  But it looks like a nice neighborhood.  I appologize to anyone who didn't get the emails I sent out with my address and phone number.  I guess the little email button next to the members names doesnt work.  Everything seemed fine but I guess not.  I wonder where those emails went.  Who is going to show up at my house demanding Christmas cheer?

Thanks to those who made it.  It was fun hanging out and eating all afternoon.  The night run up Berdoo Canyon was a hoot and very coolish and windy at the top (37 degrees).  The Joshua trees were kind of spooky lit up by the full moon.  And we saw two shooting stars (or maybe it was Santa warming up).

I want to say thanks to Mitch and Mary for hosting the party at their house, and to everyone who showed up, for a great afternoon.

The food was good, the weather was good, the company was good, and best of all, no one got hurt.

Heather and I drove back to San Diego by way of Hwy 74 up to Anza. It was fairly clear, but very windy going up the mountain, the full moon made for some really nice views.  Once we hit the top the clouds closed in, the light rain was blowing sideways in the very heavy wind, and visibility was not much more than a car length or so.  We both enjoy seeing weather like that when we're safely warm and dry inside the X.  It was fun.
