Just my .02, but I would suggest starting it here, and then linking the thread to TNX....that site is BUSY and threads get lost easily
However, just my opinion....

CANVAZ is a group outing highlighting CAlifornia, NeVada and AriZona. CANVAZ.
The location of the outing rotates on an annual basis, and last year, the AZ guys hosted outside of Tuscon, AZ.
Last time it was here in CA, we did it in Big Bear and it was a blast. We had a few of us that camped in town, and there were runs all day Saturday and Sunday, with differing difficulty rating, based on your rig and what you're comfortable with.
I think we first need to nail down a location to host; Once we figure that out, the rest of the stuff will fall into place.
Big Bear was the last hosting spot (last 2?), and is a really logical choice because of the diversity of runs and the hosting facilities (cabins/camping/hotels, etc)
I think we ought to look at other locations to use, since Big Bear has been our go-to spot for this event for a few years in a row, but you really can't argue with how convenient everything is up there at the same time...

I vote for Gorman OHV Park. http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1192 (http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1192)
I went there about 5 years ago when I had my FJ and had a blast! They have trails for every difficulty level and we can even reserve a campsite right next to their "training grounds" that has 3 levels of difficulty that offers hours of entertainment of watching people that think they are off road Gods destroy their over-priced, dealership-built vehicles on the hard course. ;D

Awesome! Thanks for the input XXXTerra!!

I still think BigBear has the most trail versatility. The only tough trail in Hungry Valley is Miller and that's about as tough as Gold Mt.
-
I'm down with big bear.
-
October is cool enough to head out to Anza Borrego as well.
-
Truckhaven?
-
keep the ideas coming fellas....
remember, when we pick a spot, we're gonna be hosting a few peeps from out of state and they may or may not be ok with rudimentary camp sites....
-
The last two have been in the desert (Vegas and Tuscon), let's get it into greener areas. Big Bear is great option since we can go high into the mountains or down into Johnson Valley easily. Maybe there' something in the Tehachapi (sp) area for something different.
-
Kennedy Meadows area is nice, but it is definitely all camping. I've also heard there are some good trails in Los Coyotes Indian Reservation, but I have no first-hand knowledge.
-
Great to see this thread get going, I will make an effort to attend and make sure it ends up headlined on AZXC and in our newsletter.

Cool...thanks Avi.

Well this should be fun.
Hopefully there won't be any campfire restrictions for Big Bear in October. (yellow posts)
Developed campgrounds like Hanna Flat do not typically have restrictions other than you keep it under control and in the provided ring.
-
I've worked up there when fires were not even allowed in developed sites. The current drought could get us to that level.
What about Johnson Valley, or Silverwood Lake. We can do Cleghorn and Pilot Rock but We're limited on lodging.
We could face fire restrictions no matter where we are.
-
My vote would be Big Bear. You have everything in a mountain setting. Runs for all levels. With all the amenities.
-
It's settled then.....Big Bear it is. ;)
-
Now I just gotta say not the 1st weekend in Oct. I'd say the 2nd weekend.
-
So Oct 9th through the 11th. And it's Columbus day weekend. At up in big bear. Any issues with that?
-
Sounds good to me. Will events start Friday morning (i.e. should I plan on coming up Thursday night)? Just need to block the days off for work.
-
I'd say Thursday night arrival and 1st day of trails would Friday. So that way we can get 3 days of trail runs. Friday sat and sun. Leave Monday
-
All emenities will be difficult on a holiday weekend. Camp spots will be scarce and lodging will be more $$.
I vote a regular weekend. Trail on Sat morning, a twilight evening/night Sat run and a Sun Morn run.
-
Columbus Day is not a California State holiday. Why would we celebrate the evil white European conqueror? Instead, we take Cesar Chavez day on March 31st.
-
I've never been to Big Bear. Checked on a map and it looks like only 5 hrs from phoenix and about 3:30 from Vegas, should be good for anyone interested in a long weekend.
-
Is this CANVAZ V?

October 9-11 sounds great. I'll even let you guys buy me a beer to celebrate my birthday on the 10th. ;D

So who's planning on roughing it? And who's planning on getting a room?
I'm gonna start trying to talk to some camp ground up there and maybe get a lower rate locked in since I'm a retired Marine I maybe able to get us onto the MCCS grounds and cabins they have up there. If they are open then.

I'm pretty sure we have access to a really nice campground since we are a part of Adopt-A-Trail
Maybe find out if we can use it for that weekend?
-
That's a good idea too. I didn't know about that
-
This sounds quite fun and interesting. If I'm able to make it, I'd rather be roughing it. No point in having all this equipment and not using it.
-
So what trails will we be running. I have done gold MTN and Jacoby a number of times and can lead or trail gunner on those trails.
Holcomb creek and John Bull is a must for the more build guys.
We can even offer up a gold mine tour that are 2wd friendly.
-
I ran Holcomb Creek yesterday ... A little dry up there but beautiful!

I was gonna say why not run two groups like done in the past if we get enough rigs to show. Do easy to mild trails for one and hard to extreme for those that have a rig that can take it.

Scott do you happen to have any photos from your weekend trip? It sounds like you covered quite some ground.

I would definitely agree: I'm sure there would be enough people and interest to have both groups going.
-
Sorry ... I was solo and didn't take any pics ... It was cool though ... I was following some jeep and we hit a fairly tough section on the trail and I could see it I. His face. He didn't think I could make it up, let alone keep up with him!! I love showing up the jeep folks.

There will deff be interest in levels of difficulty.
We have ran greens, blues and blacks in the past. The smallest group was black trail and we had 4 rigs. I think Ghost (yeah I said it....GHOST!) had over 10 rigs on Rattlesnake Canyon green run. Terry had about 7 rigs on Pontiac.
There's got to be something for everyone.
-
So is Oct. 9-11 set in stone? so i can book it off
-
Yup those are the dates. Later this week I'm gonna create a new post for it for trail sign up and what not. So it don't get lost in this one

Campground for me, would be nice to get a bunch of sites for everyone else who is camping.........
-
BigBear in Oct is no joke. It is COLD.
-
Amen on the cold
-
Better the cold than the heat......
-
A good sleeping bag and a Toque will get you through a cold night
-
A good sleeping bag and a Toque will get you through a cold night
Hey if it's our resident Canadian approved were good to go. They have temps there of below freezing to just plain ass cold and that's in the summer Eh'.... The other benefit is if something doesn't work out, who better to blame other than our resident Canadian.
-
This may be a silly question, and please don't flame me for asking - but since this isn't an "officially sanctioned" event, are we ok with extending invites to family and friends with capable vehicles that aren't of the Nissan variety? Or do we prefer to limit this to just Frontiers and Xterras from the tri-state area?
Some "regulars" come to mind, including my cousin with his F-150 and Celt's dad with his Jeep.
-
This is for anyone. Trails will have "requirements" to make sure the odds of spending the night on the trail are reduced. But other than that, all is fair game.
We had a jeep on the trail with us last time.
I have a few Tacoma and Jeep buddies that might join us too.
-
Am I allowed to come?
And lol at "toque"
-
Only if you wear a pink hat Steve
-
A fedora, a pink fedora.
-
??? I thought the requirement for Steve to come was that he had to wear a shirt with one of our faces on it?

Hey pipe down you.............. :) Our resident Canadian is only allowed to post one post per month per the MOU 54.675(a)SCCX. Anything after that will need group admonishment and fire Jenga approval (In the event of a tie Steve C will flip a R-180 diff heads or tails to determine the outcome). Be dang lucky it's not the Fez approval you seek along this journey.
-
Is that because of some sort of funky metric to standard conversion? Like, he's allowed 5 posts a day in metric, which converts to 1.17345 standard posts a day? :P

Figures, next time the board convenes this shall be addressed and dealt with.

THERE'S A THREAD FOR THIS!!!
Toro has already opened the "Thread Jack Thread".
If you don't have anything pertinent to add to THIS thread, please be funny, punny, gay or whatever off-color crapola on the PROPER thread.
We have guests from other states checking in here for 'real' information.
And your Gay, Canadian, Bromance bashing blather is an embarassment to the club and me personally! Except the part about Canadians, they really are a bunch of sissy, metric, peace mongering Mounties. He he, how can you say mountie without it sounding gay? Try it! I'm a Mountie, you're a Mountie, We're all Mounties. Holy molly, I just peed my self, gotta go.

As of this Wednesday, there are no wood or charcoal fires allowed anywhere in the San Bernardino National Forest, including FS fire rings 😢
