Yeah sorry, I'm trying to keep the format of the other forums and keep the pics in the first post.

The install wasn't bad, prep is key. Patience when you're squeegeeing is important, too. There are a few small bubbles, but I'll have to take a look at it in the daylight tomorrow.

I ordered the MOLLE panels from Xterra Performance.

So, I added a Bucksnort rear bumper last week, and just finished my CB install tonight. I am using a Uniden 520XL in my center armrest. I went a little different approach with the antenna and mounted it in the hood channel.  The antenna is a RoadPro RP-550.

Mine is VERY functional! I'm so happy I got one. I notice a huge difference just driving around in the daytime, and an even bigger difference when my light bar is on at night. I guess it's probably a bigger issue with white Xterras because the light reflects so badly off of a glossy white surface.   :-\

It does actually cut down on the sun glare quite a bit, though probably not as much as on your white truck.  I noticed this because I drive straight east into the sun in the morning and then drive straight west into the sun coming home from work in the evening.  I haven't used it with the roof lights yet.

Ohh, you mean this guy?  It was originally meant to match my Frontier, which was silver, but I guess it does match the Xterra pretty well too.

Wow that is some nice PRO-4X.

I love the pictures. I'm working on building out my 2015 PRO-4X overland style and hope to have some pictures up soon. Right now I am recovering from a rather unfortunate holiday injury (dislocated ankle)

In looking through your build there are the following:

Drivetrain:
- PRG aluminum front diff bushing inserts
- PRG poly steering rack bushings

I can't seem to find the poly steering rack bushings on PRG site. How do you like them and what are they called on the site? Thanks!

Yeah, definitely give me a call when you're up here. Do any of the turbines you work on use LM blades? They're made in North Dakota and my wife was wondering if they are used down here.

Rick,

Are these what you describe as - PRG aluminum front diff bushing inserts - on your build?

http://www.prgproducts.com/shop/product/diff-bushing-kit/ (http://www.prgproducts.com/shop/product/diff-bushing-kit/)

One more question (definitely not my last), did you get the Ubolt flip kit or gather the parts separately?

http://www.prgproducts.com/shop/product/xterra-ubolt-flip-kit/ (http://www.prgproducts.com/shop/product/xterra-ubolt-flip-kit/) I purchased and have yet to install the OME Dakar setup which includes new ubolts. If the kit is the right way to go, I'll give Greg a call and see what it would cost w/o the ubolts.

Thanks,

Hank

Hank, I don't mind answering questions.

Yes, that is the correct bushing insert set that I have.  Also, you'll notice I changed the description of the steering rack bushings to say "delrin" instead of poly.

Are you ordering the springs through Greg?  If that's the case, just have him nix the round u-bolts and see if he'll knock some cost off the springs.  I ordered my springs from Nisstec and I had them include the square u-bolts, instead of the round ones.  I ordered the bottom bash plate from PRG and the Titan u-bolt plates from Nissan separately.  Had I ordered the springs from PRG, I would've just purchased the entire kit and had him remove the round u-bolts from the cost of the springs.  I'm not sure procuring the parts separately would save you money.

Modded the AFE Hi-tuck exhaust from the Frontier to make it fit the Xterra.  it wasn't as simple as AFE made it sound.  There was quite a bit of cutting and I think some minor bending, but it's on.   O0

just fyi, having your front plate on the dash is about the same as not having it on the front at all.  also since you have out of state plates, no cop will give you shit for not having one at all as they have no clue if  ND requires them or not.

Yeah, honestly I just set it up there and forgot about it. I haven't taken it down completely because I'm pretty sure the security forces gate guards on base would give me grief about it. If it weren't for that, it would be gone.

Went a little higher this weekend.  Cranked the coilovers up in the front and added PRG adjustable shackles out back (also added extended Bilsteins from PRG and Nisstec extended brake lines).  I think the front feels a lot better.  I was expecting a harsher ride, but I think the added pre-load seems to help smooth out the ride a little bit.

Thank you! The thing is never done. I thought I was done, but the Titan swap was sitting in the back of my mind.  I finally conceded and decided to do it. Plus, after actually using my truck, I think it needs the extra travel that comes from the swap. Not necessarily for high speed stuff, I think it currently handles that well, but for climbing. I'd like to be able to climb things, without getting three wheel action on every single obstacle.

You're going to love it.   If you buy the PRG uppers be prepared to have to force the UCA in.  Mine were about a 1/4" off.  Greg said to muscle it in which made me nervous, but haven't had one problem.  Beyond that it was cake.

Congrats, its a big upgrade...not that I have it on my rig yet, but th evidence off-road is clear.

Blue gloves are still available if you need help, I don't mind helping and learning on other guys rigs while plotting my own upgrades :) Those pics was one of the first 'mod days' I attended and working with Ghost on the Ghost was a blast. Working with you on the Smurf will be just as much fun, color coded to the gloves

Yeah, I hope so. After Last Chance Canyon today, I see that I can definitely use it.  I ordered the new SPC UCAs, hopefully they'll go right in.

Moved the OEM top hats and modified OEM isolators over to the Tundra 5100s, in preparation for the swap. This a pretty good shot to compare the two struts.

Titan swap complete in a little over 4 hours, with the help of Toro, Woody, add occupantX. It went off without a hitch. I think Danny stated that the worse thing that happened was trying to make room in the fridge for beer.

Yep, that's a little bit of grease coming out of the inner boot. I got three boots in time for the swap, but the fourth didn't come in time, so I reused the old one. It leaked pretty good, I have grease all over the bottom of the truck. I'll be ducting and zip tying it to hold me over until I get a chance to replace the boot.

Well, here's the good stuff...

First off, deduct .5" off the measurements I posted in post #82. I measured with the tape straight today. With it bent, the measurements were off about .5". Anyway, new height is 38.25" from fender to ground, front and rear. 23.5" from fender to hub, front and rear.

Well, it was little over 4, to be fair.  haha  I was on one side, Toro was on the other. Woody and OccupantX plugged away on the skids and then the diff, while we were working on the suspension.  It was a pretty good team.

I did have the sway bar installed prior.  At this point, I wish I had removed it a long time ago.

Haha, mine has taken over my page too.

Ahhh, dang.  I was hoping you had it off before to see how much of a difference it was with your aftermarket suspension vs. titan swap. I was thinking most guys say its a huge difference because most run sway bars and then with a titan swap they don't have one for the first time. No front sway really is a huge difference.

I ran no sway bar before my titan swap, it really isn't much difference before and after swapping.  the timbrens up front really helped with limiting body roll with 600lb springs, it would roll over pretty hard until the bumpstops kicked in then it was really stable.  Running 700lb springs now, and it handles like a dream on road, little rougher off road but still handles great.

I have SuperBumps in the mail, we'll see how those do.  I'm also going to start shopping around for some heavier springs in the same length as the ones I'm running now.  The truck doesn't handle too bad at all, but I think about 50 more pounds in the spring will be perfect.

Just a tip for the bumpstops.  The LCA has 2 holes for the stock bumpstops, the outer hole is for the threaded stud and the inner hole is to prevent the bumpstop from spinning.  drill out the inner hole and mount the bumpstop there instead of the outer hole that the stock bumpstop uses, you will get much more engagement on the frame mounted bump plate.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that.  The stops I have in there right now don't even close to the strike plate.  Luckily, I've only topped the strut once so far.  I've also considered tapping the strike plate and putting the bump stop there.  What is your opinion?  Is it better on the LCA or on the strike plate?
Title: Re: RikRong's BluX build...GONE to Moab May 2019
Post by: knightrider on September 16, 2016, 04:07:28 PM
Yea I thought about mounting them to the frame instead of the LCA but didn't.  I think there may be some benefit to enlarging the strike plate as well, when squishing the soft timbrens, they will conform around the narrow strike plate, but this may be a good thing, allows a little more compression of the bumpstops.  I am on my second set of timbrens, the first set showed no signs of wear but they were seized to the LCA so I had to rip the rubber from the threaded metal collar to remove them from my old LCA's so timbren sent me a new set because they consider that a failure(great customer service).

I went ahead and installed the Super Bumps on the LCA. I drilled out and tapped the hole that was further inboard. Comparison shot of the universal stops.(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160921/6c2f1c737bdd9f8e7e0006d4b5cfe294.jpg)

It feels like it is hitting under compression, but they are pretty soft and compress a lot. I checked flex and rebound by running through the desert on Tuesday. I'm sure it limits travel, but it didn't seem to limit it by much. I need to break out a jack and actually measure travel.

Does anyone near you have a flex ramp? Maybe you could get on one of those and see what it's doing. Either way your build is looking really nice.

I'll have to check. I'm sure GreenGoon has one at his shop. However, here's a couple pics from this weekend. The stop IS slightly hurting up travel, I think I need to trim it a little.

Installed Cover King seat covers from the group buy.  I was able to store everything that I had in the back of my previous seat covers, except my fire extinguisher.  I'll get a few more packs to go on the driver's seat.  As I sat in the seat on the way to work today, I did notice the fabric starting to settle a little bit.  Hopefully, it'll soften up and go into place a little better.

Looks good.  Why the switch from alloy to steel?  Just curious as I will be going the other way around from steel to alloy to try and loose some weight as the 3.3 is slow.

If you ding up an alloy wheel you can't hammer it back into place to accept the bead. The wheel is essentially ruined. With a steel wheel and a BFH you can reshape them in the field. RikRong may have a different reason though for his decision.

Really, I just wanted to change up the look a little, but Celt does have a good point. The wheels I took off all have dings that would never be repairable.

You can repair them, they do have professional wheel repair. I had one wheel that had a repair. The PITA thing is getting it balance. They had to use so much weight, rim weight and sticky weight.

Rick black wheels and a blue lock ring would like super clean on your X.

I have but it doesn't look like they have the right hub spacing. You're in luck for your first gen, though.

Yeah wheels are a easy way to change up the look of a vehicle.  They look good on there.  A couple of my steel wheels have a slight bend to them and take a lot of weight to balance out.  Im hoping the alloys will stay nice and straight getting rid of the small vibrations I get on the highway.

Had some fun with AZXC at CANVAZ 2017. It ended up being a 12 hour day on the trails, but we had a good time. We successfully put trucks through very difficult obstacles, without any breaks. There was some body damage to be handed out, but overall a successful day. I'll start a separate thread and post up the rest when I get on a computer.

So, this happened today...

I've been trying to fight ordering Radflos and look at other brands, but there's really no good solution out there, besides going custom. My Tundra 5100 setup has worked fine, but I'm limited on my up-travel since I don't have the custom top hats.  Additionally, both front shocks are leaking already, just over a year in.  To get the setup correct, I'd need to order new 5100s and get the custom top hats, but is it worth it if I'm blowing shocks once a year?  The setup is great to get a budget entrance into a Titan swap but I'm not convinced it will work for the driving I do.  Yes, there's some technical off-roading I do (or attempt  lol ) but I also like to get some speed in the desert.  The speed, I think, is what has contributed to a premature death for these shocks.  Oh, did I mention one of the rears is leaking too?  Rear Rads are in the near future, as soon as I get a response back from 4x4 Parts about whether they have 3-5" rear shocks or Greg calls me back, whichever comes first.

Why did I go with 4x4 Parts?  Well, they literally have the shocks sitting on the shelf right now.  I love the other companies out there, but I don't want to wait.  I'd like to try to get these installed ASAP.  The picture is not correct, they are built with the shock body down and spring up.

It just seems like rebuild rates were kind of high, but after talking to many people, they're not really that bad.

I'm also trying to cancel this order and go with 2.5s. I ordered these for instant gratification, but I think the 2.5s will be better for me.

Find out if the shaft has coating. I had issues with my shock shaft rusting. I know they started doing a better coating later on.

I'm just waiting to confirm that 4x4 parts will cancel, then I'm ordering from PRG. Being in SoCal, I just drive this down whenever it's rebuild time. I'm also going to research rebuilding myself. I've rebuilt aircraft struts, these can't be much different.

Ive talked to greg about rebuilding radflos and it seems pretty easy from what he was saying.  I have rebuilt many a bicycle fork and shock so I guess I have a little experience.  You do have to have a special valve to charge them but Greg said that radflo sells a schrader valve that you can use to charge them with a bicycle shock pump.

I have a spare set of rear shocks that I may practice on.  I had them rebuilt by radflo but the passenger side lasted about a month before starting to leak.  They replaced the shaft on one of the shocks but I have no idea if it was the blown one or the good one.

Sweet! You're going to love the ride!

I'm looking into getting those same rear shocks. I need to have my Radflo 2.5s rebuilt in the front. They've got 40K or so on them now, with several trips that had miles and miles of hard (and high-speed) washboard. My wife was just commenting that my rig doesn't ride smooth anymore like it used to. I'm sure I've worn out my rear Bil 5125s at this point as well, hence why I'm looking at the Rads now. You'll have to let me know how they do. I think that's the size I'd need also, or maybe I'd need the 0"-3" lift version. I'm probably right on the cusp.

I'm pretty sure three out of my four Bils are leaking a little, not sure how.  My rears are for sure and I think the front passenger is too. I beat them a little, but I think they should have lasted longer then they have. Oh well, I'll let you know how those rears work out.

Nice Rick, well done.
Thanks Randy, it's amazing the difference good shocks make. The ride is drastically improved.

Comparison of the Tundra Bilsteins to the Titan swap Radflos. The Bilsteins were longer, but the Radflos netted 1/4" more lift. Bushings on the Bils also showed visible settling, they were off center.

I didn't keep the rears installed because the bodies are too long. I'm going to exchange them.

One of my Bils was leaking and I felt the other was due to go. I like the fact I can send the Rads back for rebuild when I need to. I also feel like the Bils didn't quite provide the correct dampening. It's hard to describe, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, it's like they didn't provide enough dampening to keep you from getting the leaf spring "float" over bumps. Also, of note, any of the longer Bils are actually Titan specific with  Xterra bushing pressed in, if you ordered from PRG or Nisstec. It's nice having a shock in there that's actually designed for the X.

This is literally my next purchase. I almost got them last month, but had my fronts rebuilt first. Now the rear is riding noticeably bad compared to the front (I'm on Billstein 5125s in the rear with about 30k miles on them). What length did you go with?

I was suprised at the difference.  Even when the Bilsteins were new, I don't feel like they were as good as it is now.  I originally ordered the 3-4" lift shocks, but they were wayyyy too long.  I believe these are the 2-2.5" rear lift shocks.  They are showing the appropriate amount of shock shaft, so that's good.  The original ones I ordered only showed about 2" of shock shaft, definitely too long.

Picked up Steve's old Deavers today. They're still in very good shape, little to no rust, just desert dirt. I'll give them a little cleaning and bolt them up in the next few weeks. Thanks for the hook up Steve.

These were Steve's old Deavers, I'm sure there was some salt from past trips, but I'd be willing to bet my springs will look far worse if I take them apart.

They kept all the mud and melted snow in check this weekend.

We had a great run from Apple Valley to Big Bear on Sunday with the SoCal Xterra Owners FB group. There was some snow, some slick packed snow, and a ton of fun.

The boulders on Holcomb still give me anxiety. Lol I talked to Terry and Dani about the Holcomb run when we were in Moab. As for a trip out to there, I'll bet you could get some people to join. Heck, depending on when it is, I'd come down for it.

Holcomb was some serious Bravo Sierra with the mud and heat. Maybe 2020 would be a good year for a SCCX Moab trip.

I'm going to swap to Titan outer tie rods, with Titan inner tie rods, so I just ordered Hitachi Titan inners/outers. I'm currently running PRG heimed outers and I'm getting a pop just left or right of center when I turn the wheel. I also was getting really bad popping when turning with aired down tires while in Moab. Hopefully, it's just the inners going bad and I caught it before the rack is toast. FYI, I'm just under 59K miles on the truck.  I read through several posts on FB talking about how heims can kill the the rack pretty quickly, with people like Bill and Zach attesting to the carnage heims can create, I think it's time to get rid of mine before the rack goes.

I felt like the heimed end was putting undue stress on the steering rack. I started reading around a little and a lot of people recommend against the heimed tie rods.

After a little black ice incident last week, where I ended up with a smashed driver side headlight, I thought it would be time to install black bezel headlights.  They look much better, in my opinion.

Glad you didn't get hurt. That black ice can be really gnarly. The lights look good.

Yeah, unfortunately, it looked like dry concrete and caught me completely off guard.  Lesson learned for that bridge, though.

The same Christmas wishes to you and your family!

Well, I decided to try out a mod that's fairly new to the X and Frontier, but has been around for several years in the Z, Skyline, and S-chassis scene; Audi R8 coils. I had to spend some $$$ for the adapters but the coils were $21 each from Rock Auto. This mod has supposedly dyno'd with a 9HP improvement. People also report slightly improved MPG. We'll see how it goes, though.

I'm interested to see if those do give you better gas mileage? I seem to be averaging 13.9 right now.

I'll let you all know how it shakes out.  So far, I've only driven one way to work, so I can't factor MPG right now.  However, low end throttle response is definitely improved, and that's not just placebo.  On the highway, there's a spot where the speed limit goes from 60 to 70 and I always have to kick down to passing gear to speed up.  Today, there was decent throttle response and I was able to get up to speed without the kick down.  I can't speak for WoT response or acceleration times, though, because I haven't tested that.

Since I'm on leave and I had to postpone our trip because of this "outbreak", I decided it was time to replace a bad oil seal and circlip on the front diff. Normally, I'd do this on the lift at the auto hobby shop, but it's closed, so on the ground it is.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/9f56eb0fa287264d5d59797d98af7ae7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/baf48d7e4b808804e4e65d746bacbcf1.jpg)

There's definitely better low end response and smoother idle. I still can't get a good read on MPG, though. I messed up the gap and the electrodes on the first set of plugs I installed (didn't really know I shouldn't touch the electrode with the gap tool), so I lost about 30 miles per tank. I've since put another set of plugs in, but I haven't been driving constantly enough to figure out my MPG. I've been off work this week, had short drives in town, strong winds on the few days I did drive to work last week, near zero temps, 4wd used in snow, etc. It hasn't been a good time to figure out MPG. Hopefully, I can get some more consistency over the next couple weeks and figure out MPG.

nice to hear about the improved low end response.  in my research i also saw that R35 coils were pretty good, wonder if they are a direct swap, might be a wash if you factor in the wiring adapters needed.  could make my own for probably alot less than $175, just a matter of finding the nissan plug and pins, the VAG connectors are all over the place.

I wasn't super confident in my wiring skills, that's why I decided to suck up the cost of the adapters.

The guys did an amazing job on it.  Unfortunately, I can't drive it right now because I'm on a nice little overseas "business trip" right now.   O0  We are pretty well settled in and it sure beats the craziness of SoCal.

WOW! That sounds like a shot.  Joe do you think that was a shot? ;) :D

More power to you buddy.  Keep that thing going as long as you can.  After 250k of hard driving miles.  I got tired of changing all of those little parts and sensors every month.

I can say, I do miss the X.  15 years together it was hard to part.  Jayrat did say He saw the beast in his neck of the woods, so it is nice to hear it's still going.

It was a shot, but purely based out of love. :-*  I know things start to happen when the miles build up and I completely understand wanting to get into a newer vehicle.

Well, there is at least one Prius owner in the FB Xterra group who actually wheels it quite a bit.  She joined a couple of years ago when one of the admins played a joke and changed the group name to Prius Crew.  The group had that name for a few months because FB frowns on frequent group name changes.  lol

Looks good, Rick. I had to replace that plastic T, as well. I ended up having to use OEM again (because it was a sudden failure) and I got kind of lucky that my local dealership had the whole assembly it in stock. It had been leaking for a bit, and I should have proactively replaced it with higher grade components like you're doing.

I'll agree with Tim and say that I really do miss my Xterra, but I knew that I would. I wish I hadn't been in the position that I was, and that I could have kept it for much longer. But it was on the brink of needing some major work (cats, transmission), in addition to a BUNCH of small things, and it just didn't make sense to invest significantly more into it than what it was worth. Along with some other changes in my working/life situation that put me in a position to sell my "commuter car," it just made sense to replace my "fun car" and my "commuter car" with a new vehicle that would be my DD and my weekend warrior. With the Xterra no longer in production, I was really holding out for a new Frontier. When Nissan announced that the 2022 model was just a carryover of the 2021 (and that the release of the new one was delayed until 2021 second half, as a 2022 model), it was the tipping point that forced me into a Tacoma. I just couldn't wait any longer.

Still zero regrets, but I do miss the Xterra.

Understandable, it's a cost versus benefits thing at that point.  I also got my Xterra and started wheeling it several years after many of you OG members on here started, so I'm only starting to scrape the surface on the mileage that some of you all have/had.  When the miles get up there, we'll see how things hold up, hopefully, it's not a tale like all the other Xterras out there.

Went back to new versions of the Rugged Ridge seat vests I had on my Frontier and then originally when I first bought my Xterra. I wasn't impressed with the wear resistance of the CoverKings. Yes, they're for a Jeep, but the design of the seat is nearly identical to ours. Yes, they also cover the side seat controls, but I'm the only one who ever drives the X, so no adjustment needed.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210516/0509efff9d7a911dd6d0603c96c599da.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210516/8de9d82d75f3394f8e6121e24f00e209.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210516/88c771ce653e3b9c3203bf42634edabe.jpg)

Finally made it out on a real trip, for the first time after I moved back to North Dakota.  I met up with group of Nissan owners based around the Twin Cities area and headed up to the Iron Range area near Gilbert, MN.  It was awesome, but definitely a little different than wheeling in SoCal.

I was able to join up with the MN Nissan crew again this weekend and run around the Spider Lake OHV area in central MN.  The temps were a little above freezing, so it made the snow soft on the sides of the trail and icy in the grooves.  The conditions definitely made for a fun run, especially when trying to work with some of the less experienced guys in the group.  However, I wouldn't have changed one thing about the run.
