Some people asked about the Tri-tip, so here are the ingredients.
1 Tbsp Salt
2 tsp. Garlic Powder
2 tsp. Chili Powder
2 tsp. Ground Cumin
2 tsp. Pepper
1/2 tsp. Unsweeted Cocoa

I doubled the mix for the size of the Tri-Tips.

These shots are from Thursday, on our way out to Laughlin. My wife and I took the 62 through Twentynine Palms and ran up into Amboy for a root beer. We got stuck waiting for a few trains in Amboy, but I don't mind because I'm like a kid and I love trains. :) From there, we took the mother road east to Fenner, stopping to explore an an old abandoned WWII airstrip in the middle of the desert that I've been dying to check out. I found the airstrip a few months ago while looking over satellite images, and after a little research, I found out that it was part of Patton's desert proving grounds and was used for joint training exercises. It was actually operated as a training extension of March Air Force Base. They would line a bunch of B-17 flying fortresses up and practice taking off at the same time to launch a massive bombing assault. As I was driving down the runways and parking where the planes would have sat, I couldn't help but think about how amazing one of those massive launches would have sounded.

I had to do a little driving through the open desert to get to the airstrip, but it was totally worth it. No buildings or anything, but there are two parallel runways with large aircraft parking areas at either end. One runway and one parking area were still in really great shape, semi-paved. I even found an old metal airplane tie-down anchor. The second runway had seen better days. Unfortunately, the sun was setting quickly and I didn't really want to be blazing a trail through the open desert in the dark, so I didn't get to poke around as much as I would have liked to. I'll be making a trip back to this spot for sure.

Runway #2 was in pretty rough shape. The desert has been re-claiming this one for a while now:

The sunset as viewed from the open desert around the airstrip was amazing:

And the rising full moon over the desert was awesome as well. Difficult to capture a photo of this with my point-and-shoot... this shot doesn't do it justice:

After getting pulled over along Casino Drive (and thankfully being let go with a warning), we arrived at Harrah's around 8:30 pm and had some dinner before turning in for the night.

The morning yielded an opportunity to grab some cool shots of our rigs taking over the parking lot:

Splitting the group up for some side trips. One group went ahead to camp, one group headed over to the Kelso Dunes and Kelso Depot, and one group headed north to Death Valley Mine and Dawson's Camp). I led the group that headed over to Death Valley Mine/Dawson's Camp. Here's a cool shot with the dunes in the background:

Beautiful shot over the valley floor as Motorpig and I checked out some old mines near the campsite. Notice the train in the distance, if you can spot it:

One of the mines. Unfortunately, they were all gated off:

The Mojave Road April 2016...

And unfortunately, that's the last of the photos I took on day 2. I usually take a ton of night photos, but I was occupied with fireworks and cooking. I also failed to take photos on day 3. Epic fail on my part. I did manage to shoot one single image on Day 3, of Jayrat fixing the American flag at the mailbox in the morning. He backed his own rig up to give him the height, and it was a cool shot with his Canadian flag flying just below the American flag:

Again, just wanted to say thanks to everyone for making this such an amazing trip, especially Danny for putting it all together. Unfortunately, we had to bug out early on the final day, as we were running into some childcare deadline issues with our son. There were a few others who needed to leave early as well, so my wife and I led a small group out from the Lava Tubes to Baker via Kelbaker Road. Another small group stayed behind with Christiaan to finish repairing his rig enough to get him to Baker, and the rest of the group went on ahead on the Mojave Road to keep the day moving.

Overall, another epic trip! I feel terrible that we had to bug out early on Sunday, especially with a "man down" out there on the trail, but we knew he was in good hands and I was honestly in the way more than anything. We can't wait for next year's run, and my wife enjoyed the trip so much that she's bugging me to put together another small group (4 rigs plus myself, since we won't have a permit) to do some exploring in May like we did last year.
