Title: The Mojave Road April 2016...
Post by: RikRong on April 24, 2016, 09:18:48 PM
Well, I guess I'll kick this off for now, since I had to jet out early and I was probably the first person home.  I'll just throw a couple up and add more tomorrow, just to whet the appetite a little bit...

Airing down...

Is it just me, or are the PB links not working?  I fixed my links, but it must be something wonky going on right now.

What kind of coilover setup was that and what would cause it to break like that?

From everything that I saw Christiaan was driving very conservatively. If I had to guess as to what happened it was just previous hits on the suspension that finally gave way at a bad moment. Either way, he was with some very knowledgeable people who jumped right in to get him home. While it's always fun to laugh at the carnage it's never fun to be the guy that it happens to. I have been "That Guy" before with a catastrophic break and because of a bunch of guys much like on this forum got me back up and running. Believe me, it's no fun to be the guy who is broke out in the middle of nowhere. The stress of a break like that can be overwhelming to the driver but when the guys jump in it is like getting a life saver tossed to you in open seas with no land in sight.

What I'm saying is a testament to the guys on this forum who will not leave someone behind no matter what. They are exactly the ones I want to wheel with no matter the trail or experience.

^^^Very true Erik.

Preparation, patience, and  the tenure of the group are the reasons this trip is annually wait listed.

I love to take pictures.  This fact got me into trouble at the Winter Fest because the guys behind me in Jeeps kept getting mad when I would stop and take pictures.

Great pics and fancy time line Toro.  I'm am always amazed at how you make time to run the biggest event of the year, personally repair broken rigs (at your home), raise a great family and still find time for photo art.
I tip my hat to you Danny, I love you man.

Great shots everyone. Toro - can you post a link to Jeep Garrett's instagram page so we can check out his other photos (does he have any up yet?) Those time lapse shots are so freaking awesome.

I have quite a few photos from the trip I need to get posted up. Unfortunately I had to leave town for a business trip as soon as we got home, so I haven't had the time to work on them. I'm headed back home late this evening so hopefully I can get them posted by the end of this week.

Looks like a great trip!!!  Did the upper mount snap on the coilover or did the shaft inside of the coil spring break?  Anyways, good looking fix to get off the trail.  Awesome pictures and time lapse video.

Danny would be the one to confirm, I'm sure he got a better look when removing it but it looked like the shaft snapped at the top of the shock body.

Mounts were all good.
The shock shaft snapped right in the middle causing the whole thing to bow.
   Made taking it out "interesting"
After taking a closer look at it, I think all the gunk on the outer boot was caused by the shock oil hitting it and combining with all the dirt.
We'll need Christiaans driving feed back to see if the axle actually broke. It was getting dark and we were pretty tired at that point.

She drives ok for now; I'm not pushing her all that much, but she's drivable.  What should I be looking/listening for?

You can either remove the half shaft and inspect it or grab ahold of it to see if it's loose by pulling on it. If it's just a leaking boot, that's easy enough to fix but will require you taking the hub off to replace it and re-grease everything.
Title: Re: The Mojave Road April 2016...
Post by: RBduffer on April 28, 2016, 10:14:51 AM
It's probably just shock oil on the boot.  Clean the boot really well and check it after a day, week, month.  While you're under there just grab the axle and try to move it in all directions, it should not move.
Then drive it hard near your house to see how it holds up.
As the old sailors say, "When my boat breaks, let it be near the dock and not at sea".

1 Tbsp Salt
2 tsp. Garlic Powder

These shots are from Thursday, on our way out to Laughlin. My wife and I took the 62 through Twentynine Palms and ran up into Amboy for a root beer. We got stuck waiting for a few trains in Amboy, but I don't mind because I'm like a kid and I love trains. :) From there, we took the mother road east to Fenner, stopping to explore an an old abandoned WWII airstrip in the middle of the desert that I've been dying to check out. I found the airstrip a few months ago while looking over satellite images, and after a little research, I found out that it was part of Patton's desert proving grounds and was used for joint training exercises. It was actually operated as a training extension of March Air Force Base. They would line a bunch of B-17 flying fortresses up and practice taking off at the same time to launch a massive bombing assault. As I was driving down the runways and parking where the planes would have sat, I couldn't help but think about how amazing one of those massive launches would have sounded.

I had to do a little driving through the open desert to get to the airstrip, but it was totally worth it. No buildings or anything, but there are two parallel runways with large aircraft parking areas at either end. One runway and one parking area were still in really great shape, semi-paved. I even found an old metal airplane tie-down anchor. The second runway had seen better days. Unfortunately, the sun was setting quickly and I didn't really want to be blazing a trail through the open desert in the dark, so I didn't get to poke around as much as I would have liked to. I'll be making a trip back to this spot for sure.

Runway #2 was in pretty rough shape. The desert has been re-claiming this one for a while now:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/13.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/13.jpg.html)

The sunset as viewed from the open desert around the airstrip was amazing:

And the rising full moon over the desert was awesome as well. Difficult to capture a photo of this with my point-and-shoot... this shot doesn't do it justice:

After getting pulled over along Casino Drive (and thankfully being let go with a warning), we arrived at Harrah's around 8:30 pm and had some dinner before turning in for the night.

The morning yielded an opportunity to grab some cool shots of our rigs taking over the parking lot:

After breakfast, it was off to the Avi to meet up with the entire group.

Then off to the air-down point along the river:

Someone please buy this man some smaller pants, or make him eat some food. He's wasting away, for god's sake. Couldn't even keep his pants pulled up while airing down (censored, since this is a "family" organization):

Then it was off into the desert. I always forget just how beautiful the scenery is until we get out there:

Our first casualty. These guys made quick work of it:

Finally made it to Ft. Piute for lunch. You can see the long road through the desert that we had just traveled:

Day 2:

More follow the leader. :)

Mmmoooooooooo
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/62.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/62.jpg.html)

Say cheese, again!
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/63.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/63.jpg.html)

And again!
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/64.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/64.jpg.html)

Some petroglyphs along the "rings" hiking trail behind the hole-in-the-wall visitor's center:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/65.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/65.jpg.html)

Splitting the group up for some side trips. One group went ahead to camp, one group headed over to the Kelso Dunes and Kelso Depot, and one group headed north to Death Valley Mine and Dawson's Camp). I led the group that headed over to Death Valley Mine/Dawson's Camp. Here's a cool shot with the dunes in the background:

The Dawson's Camp group:

Sir John of Fullerton taking a little nap:

SJoF, Jordan and myself headed down into the Death Valley Mine. Unfortunately, the shaft was flooded at the bottom and we couldn't enter the mine:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/74.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/74.jpg.html)

SJoF checking out the headframe:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/78.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/78.jpg.html)

I freaking love this place!
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/79.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/79.jpg.html)

(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/81.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/81.jpg.html)

Our friend the hawk was not too thrilled about our presence:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/82.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/82.jpg.html)

Arriving at camp for night 2:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/83.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/83.jpg.html)

Beautiful shot over the valley floor as Motorpig and I checked out some old mines near the campsite. Notice the train in the distance, if you can spot it:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/84.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/84.jpg.html)

One of the mines. Unfortunately, they were all gated off:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/86.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/86.jpg.html)

And unfortunately, that's the last of the photos I took on day 2. I usually take a ton of night photos, but I was occupied with fireworks and cooking. I also failed to take photos on day 3. Epic fail on my part. I did manage to shoot one single image on Day 3, of Jayrat fixing the American flag at the mailbox in the morning. He backed his own rig up to give him the height, and it was a cool shot with his Canadian flag flying just below the American flag:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/TMR2016/87.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/TMR2016/87.jpg.html)

Again, just wanted to say thanks to everyone for making this such an amazing trip, especially Danny for putting it all together. Unfortunately, we had to bug out early on the final day, as we were running into some childcare deadline issues with our son. There were a few others who needed to leave early as well, so my wife and I led a small group out from the Lava Tubes to Baker via Kelbaker Road. Another small group stayed behind with Christiaan to finish repairing his rig enough to get him to Baker, and the rest of the group went on ahead on the Mojave Road to keep the day moving.

Overall, another epic trip! I feel terrible that we had to bug out early on Sunday, especially with a "man down" out there on the trail, but we knew he was in good hands and I was honestly in the way more than anything. We can't wait for next year's run, and my wife enjoyed the trip so much that she's bugging me to put together another small group (4 rigs plus myself, since we won't have a permit) to do some exploring in May like we did last year.

You guys remind me of the East/West German border guards during the cold war along the Fulda gap with those cameras pointed at each other......

JFan and Woody, awesome pictures.  Can I steal a couple?  I just want to make sure you're okay with it, first.  Thanks!

I'll send you a PM so it's not out there on the internet. Although this place doesn't have much to vandalize, it's still better to keep these locations low key so people don't mess them up.
