Title: Winter Mojave Rd 2019
Post by: Celt on May 16, 2018, 08:34:31 AM
Ok guys and gals it's going live now. The dates for the 2019 Winter Mojave Rd are January 19,20,21. It's over MLK holiday weekend like always. I'm thinking about doing this a little different though. Still west to east and NO "Dry" lakebed this year. Thinking get up early on the 19th and make tracks across to the NY Mountains and stay there for two nights. It should be a little more restful not having to break camp daily. Give more time to go wheeling and exploring the area, napping etc. The camp is fairly protected from those unpredictable gnarly winds. If I get any interest I might turn around at the end like two years ago and head back across the desert to home. Sage Bromax and I did that and had a lot of fun. Updates are sure to follow...

The list:

1: Celt
2: Carlos Moreno
3: Fire Ninja
4: #2
5: Bumble Bee
6: Jayrat
7: Sage Bromax
8: Scuba Dale
9: Rik Rong
10: UltraPC40
11: Duffman
12: PR & FIG.

Standby:

1: Edwin
2: Pyrofox79
3: TurboChris
4: JVR
5: Gunslinger2N
6: SocalTerraX

Return Trip:

1: Celt
2: Sage Bromax

In, not sure about passengers yet.  We need to figure out why Lilly gets car sick so easily.  If we can solve that, the wife and her might be in.

Getting stuck was 100% Fathead and well um "Others" but you were the one barking about how you hated the railroad access. As I remember in the drivers meeting you were doing some jerrymandering of your own.... But hey its as always easy to blame the maple syrup eaters..    :)

I wanted to ask a consensus from everyone going if they liked the Golden Nugget. If the rest of you guys want me to I'll try and get another discounted group rate there as I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue. I thought the rooms were nice and weren't expensive at all. It was super nice having the Claim Jumper and the other restaurants below as by the end of this trip I'm not too keen on driving too far. It had a really good ventilation system in that casino to keep the smoke at bay too.

Other changes on the drawing board are getting up early and going to NY Mtns and stay put there for two nights instead of the daily hop. This will be good if there is bad weather and people can either rest, go wheeling, hiking or whatever they want to do. No, Nada, Nichts, Nunya Soda Lake unless it's bone dry..... Even then probably
NO SODA LAKE
That place is the spawn of the devil.............

There might be plans to do another return trip through the open desert like Tony and I did two years ago and had a blast.  WMR for the win!

^^This right here. lol  I think we just had bad timing on that weekend.  Other than that, I liked the GN.

I like the idea of going straight to the mountains and setting up camp.  I kind of feel like we pulled a jerk move on this last trip when we went off wheeling after everyone had setup camp. This time, I want to make it available for everyone and give them plenty of notice that we might head out.

I dont think it was a jerk move at all buddy so no worries there. I had plenty of time to go if I wanted to. I guess the reason the check in took so long is a couple people quit and they hadnt hired more receptionists when I asked. All in all a nice hotel. It was really fun meeting up for a few drinks before then the mass migration for a really nice dinner.

So I've had some more time to think about my plans and I would like to do the return trip but the course will be altered to the one Sage Bromax and I took last time. It was a lot of fun and we did a lot of exploring out in open desert finally camping in a protected wash. I'm starting a list on the sign up for people who want to do the return or if you want to meet us in Laughlin and go along. The return trip entails hooking south after the climb past Ft. Paiute and going until we find a suitable camp spot. We might stay two days in the same spot or jump toc for a different one depending on what people want to do. I will say it was nice and relaxing staying for two days in that wash. We will probably exit the off road somewhere around Goffs and continue to 29 Palms for a re-fuel and the jump home past 2N02. No vehicle limit for this portion. Bring lots of firewood because it gets cold and well we always like those big fires. Other than that it's up to you.

Since we are somewhat getting closer to the trip I was wondering if anyone other than Sage Bromax and myself is interested in doing the return trip? The last time we headed out through the open desert and had a blast navigating as we went well off the road. The return trip was pretty relaxing with a two stretch at one camp.

I know I am still on the "Standby list". Do you have a Trail map of the "RETURN" trip? I might consider running it with you guys... If it is not too crazy, remember I am stock.... Oh yeah and if I come off of the "Standby list" ::)    Ha ha ha.

Not exactly sure about a map. We kinda turned around and headed west until we turned and started heading south. I don't think being stock would be an issue as long as you have better than street tires and recovery points front and rear.

It looks like unfortunate circumstances have dictated that I won't be able to attend this years Winter Mojave Road. There is a very slim chance it might still work out but I'm not betting on it. As a result, Scuba Dale has kindly stepped up and volunteered to lead the run so he will be the Man with the Plan. He can post all of the updates here on this thread and nothing will really change unless he needs it to. In case anyone does not know to pull the permit costs money so if you find it in the kindness of your heart a couple bucks tossed his way would be a nice gesture for him doing this for everyone. Again guys I'm really bummed out with this but know you will have a great time.

Due to work, I won't be able to go all the way to Laughlin.  Is there anyone on the trip that feels comfortable leading the remaining trip from NY Mountains to Laughlin?  The other option is we just all call it from there and hit the 40 right after the 2nd night, leaving a day early.

Still considering the run since 2 things, its my bday weekend and I been itching for a trip in a while (since mountain rendezvous).
After checking out last years Mojave run, Im assuming Afton Cyn is still going to be the road that will lead to the campsite in the NY mountains, and from there cedar mountain rd to Laughlin. correct? im just trying to map the run due to my wife not feeling 100% being self sufficient for 3 days 2 nights. We always been a 1 nighter type of campers, so this will definitely change things up.

Yeah, we always stick to one side, but I don't think where we cross is exactly where the gauge is.  I've seen people go through recently and it wasn't that high.  4ft would be over the hood of many vehicles.

If I can chime in here on some of this... Since the inception of the Winter Mojave Rd people have been super worried about the level of that water crossing. Each year we have gone through with no issues but it seems that most err on the side of caution (Smartly) and stick farther to the right side lifting the trucks up a bit. Our intakes are on the driver side and nobody has had any hydro-locking problems. The water level has been below that even on mostly stock vehicles with a comfortable level of comfort. In the winter it can get a little deeper but if you go slow with minimal wake people considering this run will be fine. If you really think about it creating a wake will help in keeping the water level lower around the engine compartment and our intakes. It also helps with some issues we can get with the electric fans.

The entire area is just a big level flood plane fed by the underground river. That area drains well above ground and would have a lot of difficulty sending enough pressure from below to make it impassable. That would come from a heavy continuous rain flooding the top soil and not from the ground water. As we experienced last year the "Not so dry Lakebed" should probably be avoided at all costs as many of us are still dealing with the aftermath and I still feel some level of responsibility to that. The water crossing is a totally different event and in my opinion shouldn't be avoided because it's a whole lot of fun at the beginning of an awesome trip. I wish all of you a fantastic trip on the WMJR 2019 and am really bummed that events took place to prevent me from doing this with all of you great people.

Honestly, we all had fun on last year's trip.  Yes, it was messy, but it was something to remember.  You shouldn't stress over what happened, we can all care less and we're all grown adults and could've bypassed the lake ourself if we didn't want to go through it.

On to this year...

Who all is camping in Afton Friday night?  Normal roll-out time, 9ish, on Saturday?

Ok, here's the latest update on the trip.  I sent in the permit request, however I'm a little worried that we might not get the official document in time due to the government shutdown.  If that's the case, we can still make it work, might just have to split the group up in to 2 if the need arises.  Here is the updated list of attendees.  If you can't make it, please send me a direct message and we will move to the next standby.

I know it was discussed before, but since we are planning on driving directly to the New York Mountain camp, we will need to be ready to hit the trail as early as possible, since it does add a few more hours.  Let's make it 8:30am.  If you are planning on driving up the day of, please plan accordingly.  If I missed anything, please let me know!

1: Edwin
2: Carlos Moreno
3: Fire Ninja
4: #2
5: Bumble Bee
6: Jayrat

8: Scuba Dale

10: UltraPC40

Hey guys, just wanted to send out a reminder to book a room if you are planning on staying in Laughlin.  I know the consensus was the Golden Nugget.  Thanks!

Who all is planning on staying in Laughlin? It'll be nice to catch dinner everyone after we clean up. If no one is staying, I'll probably just head back too.

The outlook of the weather for the trip is COLD.  This is on the main floor, so plan on even colder in the mountains.  You've been warned, lol.

On that note, we should all plan on bringing ample firewood, since we'll be in the same camp for 2 nights.  My plan is to bring the equivalent of 4 bundles.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190107/6a4105b4d469662bccde13dd98b20098.jpg)

Just a thought after reading several articles online pertaining to minimum manning at the parks because of the government shutdown...We usually all come prepared with trash bags, but maybe we should all bring extras, just in case we come upon large trash piles. I just read an article about Kelso being closed, so visitors might be branching out into other parts of the park and leaving their trash out there.

All packed (except for my pillow, need that tonight).  Will be rolling out at 0430.  Stopping in Barstow for wood and to visit my aged aunt & uncle.  Expect to be in camp in the early afternoon.

With all the rain we've had, it won't be dry. Don't do it, trust us. Even if you make it through, you'll have caustic mud everywhere.

We are eating lunch at the Kelso Depot now.  We left camp at 9:30 and followed the train tracks all the way.  Water was deep.  Train company hydro- locked a truck trying to get through the river yesterday.  We should be in the New York mountains  by mid- afternoon.  Soda Lake wasn't even a consideration.

Post Trip Report

Another successful winter Mojave in the books!  We began with spending the night in Afton Canyon preparing for the trip.  Due to the recent rains in the area, the water crossing was much higher than usual.  We found this out when a rail line worker drove his truck through the water crossing and hydro-locked the engine.  Luckily, someone came along and towed him out onto the side of the trail.

Before we headed out on Saturday, we all agreed that we would continue down the rail line to Kelso Depot vs. going through Jackass Canyon.  Right before heading out, 2 motorcyclists took their dirt bikes through the crossing.  As we started our crossing, the 2 bikers were soaked up to their waists and dealing with their water logged dirt bikes.

We made short work of the rail line trail.  We we made it to the New York Mountain campsite by around 2pm.  Unfortunately, someone had taken our normal spot, so we camped down the trail a little, which in my opinion is a nicer spot due to having more room and more flat area.  We unpacked, set up camp, and prepared to relax.  We had a great fire and great conversations, then called it a night.

The 2nd day was all about relaxation. With nowhere to go and nothing to do, we all just moved slow and woke up late.  Unfortunately, Gunslinger was plagued with a sour stomach and decided to head out.  Later in the day, Fire Ninja, #2, and I took a quick trip further up the trail to get some offroading in.  Once back in camp, we finished the day by eating dinner and gathering around the fire once again. The clouds broke just in time, and we were all treated to the awesome lunar eclipse blood moon.  After we all decided to call it a night, the REAL fun kicked in.  The wind decided to pick up and wreak havoc on our camp.  I was ignorant and didn't tie down my tent at all.  I woke up to the sound of my stuff being thrown across the tent because 2 panels in my ShiftPod popped in.  I made the decision to go out and secure the tent, and heard the sound of Tony doing the same.  Later I would find out that Fire Ninja would have an even more interesting experience.  Where he set up his camp was even more exposed to the wind, and the gusts were so strong, it began to uproot his tent stakes.  As they were attempting to resecure their tent, their kitchen was blown over.  As they picked up their kitchen, their tent came completely loose and was airborne.  They had enough of the wind and packed up and made an early departure.

It was down to Tony and I.  We got up in the morning and packed up, as we were too sick of the wind.  We also found that it was colder in the morning than when we went to bed.  We shook hands, got in our trucks and headed out.  We parted ways on the trail, as Tony was heading to Laughlin, and I was heading south to the 66/40.  The drive home was very sketchy, with 40mph headwinds almost all the way home.

Overall, a great trip.  Can't wait until next year!

I'm glad everyone had a good time. I had to go to Idaho during the dates and I'm still not home. I really wanted to give a huge thanks out to Scuba Dale for stepping up and leading this trail in my absence. Its no small task leading a run especially one that's about 130 miles through the desert during the winter.
Making sure everyone is taken care of deserves a lot of credit to all of our trail leaders!

I would like to second that...

Thanks for stepping up and taking the lead on this roll! You did great. I will be honest the water sing had me a tad concerned, especially when the railroad workers truck got stuck then the 2 motorcycles had the same fate the morning of..... However, The Terracon performed flawlessly with the minor bit of taking on water! Your advice was priceless. Thanks Brother.

Sage, did your Dash cam catch the crossing? to include the 2 castways on the island?

Great time... Thanks Scuba!
