Here are a few of my shots from today.

It was raining as we crossed over the mountains from San Diego, but once we started down the hill the weather became nice. It was pretty windy on the Montezuma Grade.

After we left the Visitor Center we made a brief stop to check out some of the sculptures along Borrego Springs Road.

From there we caravanned out to the trail head at the end of Split Mountain Road.

The weather in Fish Creek was great when we stopped to air down.

Ready to roll, next stop - the Anticline at Split Mountain.

We made another stop or two in Fish Creek to check out the scenery before heading for the lunch spot in Sandstone Canyon.

Fresh apple pies from the Julian Pie Company to go with lunch. We stopped at the same spot we've used the previous 2 years. The only difference this time was that there was almost no one else in Sandstone Canyon this year. Quite a change from the last couple of years, when it was always crowded.

After lunch we drove the rest of the way up Sandstone, which is now only about a bit under a mile from where we stopped for lunch. We split into 2 groups for this, as there is not a lot of room to turn around at the end.

Once we were all back together it was time to head out the way we came, with a detour through Loop Wash for part of the way.

The sky was pretty dramatic as we finished airing up at the end of Fish Creek where it meets Split Mountain Road.

After everyone had left I decided to pull out my tripod and try a few shots of the moon rising over Ocotillo Wells. These first 2 were taken by the ranger station at the OHV area.

This next one was taken on Buttes Pass Road.

While I was traveling on S-2 from Scissors Crossing towards Hwy 79 I looked over to my left and saw what appeared to be a rainbow in the darkness (it was after 6:00PM, cloudy and raining). It was pretty much a pale white almost grey, and you could see the entire arch. It was, of course, coming from the moon. I took a couple of shots, from 2 places, and lightened the exposure some in this one in order to bring it out. Once I lightened it up you can see the colors. The sensor on my camera has some hot pixels, and there is glare from my taillights on the right. You can just make out the roadway in the foreground. I've never even heard of rainbows at night, let alone ever seen one.

I've put more pictures on my gallery web page here (http://frankbaiamonte.smugmug.com/So-Cal-Club-Xterra-SCCX/Sandstone-Canyon-November-2010/).

I saw lots of other people in our group shooting pictures today - looking forward to seeing them.

It got dark super fast.

Zach and Mitch, nice shots.  How was the drive up to S-22?  What route did you take?

It was a little nerve racking Because i almost tipped once but it was a hell of a lot of fun. nothing like flying through palo verde, short and thimble wash at 40 mph in almost pitch black (besides the full moon) desert. We then hit s22 and found calcite mine which was also a ton of fun. jake and andy and someone else i think went off to eat dinner and hit coyote canyon (at least they said they would) and mitch mark and i all aired up and went home.

which brings up another interesting story. the west side of the mountains were sure getting hit hard. It was raining buckets i swear and half the time, i could barely see past the hood of the X because of the fog.

I know what you mean about the drive back to San Diego. I took 78 to Scissors Crossing, then S-2 to 79 and back to 78 at Santa Ysabel. 11 miles longer than just staying on 78, but avoids the Banner Grade. The rain started about halfway between Yaqui Pass Road and Scissors, and then hit heavy fog right after Santa Ysabel. The worst was coming out of Ramona down the hill on 67, almost no visibility.

Zach - if you can send me your email address I'll forward full-size versions of those shots of you and Coli (hope I spelled her name right) sitting on you truck. The other shot turned out nice too.

Jake - same for you, I got a good shot of you and your friend (and apologize because I'm not sure of her name).

Great day!!!! Glad i was able to find everyone even though i missed pie!!!! The run through the desert headed too the S22 was a lot of fun and Calcite Mine Road has gotten a lot easier but still a ton of fun. Dinner was great with live music and Coyote Canyon at night through the giant tree tunnel river crossing was great. All in all a perfect day in the desert.

Alex-I still have your Walky. Let me know how you want to arrange getting it. I should be out in Borrego next weekend and i know your pretty close. But we will figure it out.

Bruce, it was great to see you, sorry we didn't have more time to talk.  I may be out there on Sunday, unless I'm delayed traveling back from Seattle on Saturday (or just too tired after dealing with the TSA).  If you know where you're going to be let me know.

As for the pies: (a) they were good, sorry you missed lunch, and (b) there were at least 1 1/2 pies in the trucks you went with in the evening, none of them mentioned anything?  I guess you guys were too busy trying to get across to S-22 quickly.  There's always next time.

Frank - thanks again for the trail run.. It was a great time, your guidance appreciated..  I may add the photos I have from My blackberry but I think you guys captured the better shots by far..

As for the evening run through the desert..   here are a few vids..They are not long as I was solo in my truck so any vid meant one hand on the wheel.. Check out the sky before it got dark..

Hey, nice driving Zach..  we both got a little squirley at least once..  Sorry for the dated soundtrack on last 3 but at 40-50 mph through the desert at dusk had me fumbling through music files..  enjoy..

Mark, cool videos.  What did you shoot those with?

As I was watching those I got to thinking that I should apologize for driving so slowly on the way out to Split Mountain Road. You guys that were heading for Calcite Mine must have been going nuts thinking it was getting dark fast and he's just plodding along.  Oh, by the way, just so you know - that is the fastest I've ever driven down Fish Creek, and with the fewest stops. It could have been a lot worse.

Hey Everyone. I can't express enough how much fun I had on this trip. It was wonderful seeing everyone and making new friends. Out of the probably 10-15 times I have been out to Anza Borrego this trip was defiantly up in my top three favorite. Hugeee thanks to Frank for putting this trip together, leading it, and picking up the Pies for everyone it defiantly wouldn't have been the same without you. To everyone that decided to go on the second part of the trip with me through Ocotillo wells and run Calcite thanks again, that was a BLAST we defiantly made veryyyy good time through Ocotillo Wells  ;D Alex again great job on the Calcite trail, to everyone that says that's a four wheel drive only trail you just proved them wrong with flying colors. For everyone else that wasn't there Bruce and I ended up running coyote canyon after dinner in Borrego Springs. I have never done that trail at night, and was a whole new experience, Mitch I wish you could have stuck around for that one, you would have LOVED it. Anyway I look forward to doing another trip with all of you again real soon.

Thanks,
Scott

Here is a link to the official website of Galleta Meadows (http://www.galletameadows.com/). This tells the whole story, and there is a good map of the various installations.

I've set up a few trips out there just to see these, and would be happy to organize another one. A couple of times we combined some offroading, other times when I was with the photo club from San Diego we just stuck with the sculptures since not everyone had offroad vehicles.

Here are some links to my photo galleries of the sculptures. These were taken over a long period of time. You can see how the rust patina has formed on some of them as they get older. They are designed to get a rust patina as the final surface, but when they are set up you can still see some bare metal.

Frank, I would not have enjoyed the day as much if not for the first part of the trail run..  Your pace and narration (and Pie) was the reason I was out there in the first place.  Your leading an example on how to absorb and enjoy the desert experience.  .
My fault for the time pressure as I was thinking we needed to run Calcite in the light, my apologies for speeding it up   ......  so again a big thanks, and i look forwad to the next run..  ..
Jake, thanks for leading the 2nd half of the run....  that was icing on a good day already..
A day to remember..

Marc, you should invest in a GoPro camera.  A few of the guys will be taking those along with them to Moab next year.

As a matter of fact, OZ has a thread somewhere here on SCCX that shows his GoPro during the SQB run.

Will check out the gopro cam..  Since I'm as modded as I plan to be before 60k I might consider the $$ on the trail run cam..  ..
Matt, good to meet you as well. Let me know if you decide Alcan, Deaver AAL or whatever.. I'm trying to hold of on my upcoming mod list till 60k on the x (@ 19.5k now) .. so i think you've got the mod. garage covered and if you need a hand let me know.
soo..  bumpers, 285 Mt's, steering wheel radio controls, 226 axle swap with ARB Locker (or 200ck ARB locker) (stealth more stuff??)  to follow..

ArchX-

Thanks for the offer and it was nice to meet everyone as well.  I had a great time and was pleasantly supprised that my wife enjoyed herself too.  She is not much of an off road person; she did perk up when she saw the Borrego Day Spa.  I might be able to drop her off there for the next run ;D.

I was thinking about going with the PRG spacers and AAL until I can swing the advanced lift.

Hopefully you can make the December run.  If you haven't seen it yet, its under the general discussion tab.

Hope to see you out there!

Hey Marc, I LIKE this list of mods!  Only 41K miles to go!  ;)

My skid project is on hold for now, more on that later.  Stoked to see what a great run this was, and kicking myself more than you know for not making it!  However, I am for sure planning on making the 17th-18th of December, hopefully that will pan out as I would hate to miss another epic SCCX run.

This is a good lift, I was able to install solo (NOT recommended) to get a little extra clearance.  However, I would go with the PRG advanced kit that Marc has installed on his rig, much better for the long term.  A few more $$$ though...

Well, I don't know how epic it will be, but it looks like there is enough interest that I'm pretty sure I'll set it up. If you haven't explored around in those washes up at the north end of the Park just south of S-22, there is some really cool stuff to see. (Roaring through there at 40mph in the dark doesn't count either - not that it isn't fun, but you tend to miss the details that way.)

It's too bad you couldn't make the Sandstone trip John.  If you haven't been there, and want to go, let me know and we'll set something up. I want to hike all the way back to the end of where we used to be able to drive to and get some photos.

Gotta love those "roaring 40's"  ;)

Thank you Frank for the offer, right now I am just trying to carve out the time for the run on the 17th-18th.  I will for sure keep you posted.  Happy to see that Marc made it out with the group for a run, he is a great guy and loves to blur through the desert!  ;D
