Here's a couple links to info on FRS Frequencies and Tone compatibilities between some of the different brands.  A tone on one type *may not be* the same tone on another.

Link 1

Link 2 << This link has a very nice compatibility breakout.

Hey SCCX hams, I will be getting into ham radio in the future and have a question.  I am having a rear bumper built by Hefty and would like to future proof a little bit.  My bumper will have a dual swing out arm set up with tire carrier / hi-lift / cb mount on one arm and two jerry can holders on the other side.  Does it makes sense to have a tab mounted to the jerry can side (somewhere not sure where yet) to hold a ham antenna?

If so, what size should the whole on the tab be?

Thanks!

Yes it makes sense.  Try to position the tab as far away from your CB antenna on the rack as it is fabbed.

The hole in the tab for the antennas for ham vs. CB should be the same.

As far as the height of the tabs, just so you can clearance a 36" to 48" antenna with the top just over the roof line should be fine.

Well you've got a few options for ham antenna mounts and it all depends on the antenna you plan on using which depends on what bands youll be using.  To keep it low cost and simple (well relatively), i would just get a 2m radio. So for the antenna, i would recommend finding one that is a 1/2 wave if its going to be mounted on the rear bumper as 1/2 wave doesnt need a ground plane to work well.  After you figure out what antenna you want, then you'll know which mounting option you need.

As for mounting options, There is the 3/8" stud that is the same as what is standard for cb antennas, then you have the popular nmo mount, then you have the pl-259 mount.

Most nmo mounts require a 3/4" hole but some require only a 3/8" hole, while others require a larger 13/16" hole.   I'm not sure the size hole for the pl-259 mount but I'm sure it would depend on the mount used, as it varies.

Cliff notes:  jumping into ham requires alot of reading and research, unlike cb, its requires a little more knowledge but thats what separates us from the little kids on cb ;-)

I would have hefty weld on a tab that will accept at least a 1" hole but i wouldnt have him drill it.  When you figure out what route your going to take, you can drill your own hole to fit the mount you choose, rather than having to go through the headache of having a hole that's too large or too small.

That's what she said

Thanks for the help guys.  I let Hefty know and they said they'd do it no problem.

Hey guys,

I've put together a cart on amazon of my cb set up.  Going to order next week.  What's everyone think?  Did I include everything?

It will be mounted on the hefty rear bumper.

Thanks for the help!

I was thinking of putting it in where the stock radio goes.
I will also be putting in a single din head unit and the CB would go right below it.

My car audio guy seems to think it will work.  Other than that location, I'm really at a loss.  The alternative seems to be getting a smaller unit that will fit in the center console

Any other suggestions are welcome!

The more I think of it, I don't really want a CB radio in my center stack.  I think I'll just go with a smaller one and put it in the center console.

MEHHH I can't make up my mind.

It's going to be a nightmare when I get certified for HAM.

I was wondering where and how you were going to mount the antenna too.  I didn't see any kind of mount for you antenna in your cart.

It will go on my hefty rear bumper.  It came with a tab for an antenna.  It is located right behind my spare tire and hilift

Cart looks good.  if you decide on the center console, get the uniden 520, fits like a glove.
