Title: Apple Valley to BB: 13 Jan 2019
Post by: RikRong on January 02, 2019, 08:33:35 AM
I posting in there because this is not an SCCX Xcursion...

I'm cross-posting this from FB because I know there aren't a ton of us on that page, and I thought it would be nice to see some of us out there too.

Quote
This time around we find ourselves starting in the desert and heading up to the (hopefully) snowy mountains. I ran this route last March and had a blast. I’m going to say that 4x4 is most likely needed as there are a couple sections that could be tricky in a 2wd, especially under snowy, muddy, sloppy conditions. (I know there are some that say they can do it in 2wd, and if you can, more power to ya…just know that the Admins/Moderators will not be held liable….nor would we leave anyone stranded)

Once we reach the snow-line, we can scout out a spot for some snow-play and snacks…maybe play for an hour? Really depends on the weather and conditions. After that we will continue on into Big Bear proper where we will cruise through the Holcomb Valley (3n16) and end up at the old mining ruins (great spot for a group picture). From there we can head into town and eat lunch, shop, or feel free to head out if you need to get home.

When:
Sunday January 13th

Where:
3n14 (starting in Apple Valley) to 3n16 (ending in Big Bear)
26.75 miles of dirt!

Meet up location:
8960 Bowen Ranch Rd. Apple Valley, CA 92308
34.41412, -117.13232

Start Time:
9:15 a.m., ROLLING OUT BY 9:30a.m.
(if you are running late, please try to reach us via CB/Walkie-Talkie so we know you are coming).

Finish Time:
Hard to say, I’d say we would be done (at the end of 3n16) by 11:30am-12pm or so….but don’t quote me.

What to bring:
Warm clothing, food, water, first-aid kit, shovel, recovery gear (straps, d’rings, etc. Stuff to play in the snow if you wish. I always carry chains when traveling in the mountains (but I doubt we would be hassled). Be sure to top off your tanks in Apple Valley. Last but not least, a good attitude.

Difficulty:
2/10. Nothing crazy, just a couple short mildy rocky climb sections that shouldn't be a problem.

Coms:
I have a basic CB and handheld FRS walkie-talkies. If you have some, please bring them…it just makes life easier. Channels will be determined the night before the run.

All events are family friendly, we pride ourselves on this. There will be young children on this run, so please conduct yourselves as responsible adults. Please drive safely to the trail and especially when out on the trail. We are looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces on this run!

Doing runs on a Sunday only just does not make sense to me.  ???

Have fun though.  I'd like to do that trip again someday.  I went the other way once from Hanna Flats to Apple Valley.
It would be cool to do with some snow on the ground.

Yeah, I agree, but it's not my group to run.

FB post says it's postponed...

Edit. NVM, someone else is leading it now.

Guy be careful.  With the expected rain this weekend there is a fair chance that rattlesnake canyon will flood and that is not someplace you want to be when the water starts rising.

Thanks for the heads up, we'll definitely keep an eye on the weather.

True, this is pretty much a 2wd friendly route that just takes us into town.

RIKRONG,
So you have run this before? Thats a great thing to have in our hip pocket!!!!!!!! Was thinking about turning around at BB and going back to apple valley, Instead of rolling thru BB proper.

No, I actually haven't run it. Their FB post makes it sound 2wd friendly, except for some muddy spots.

I'll also probably just turn around too, it'll be easier for us to get back home.

Its 2wd friendly depending on snow. 3N14 and 3N16 are just dirt highways. Very common to see cars and trailers on those trails

It's still a few days out, but they're forecasting a pretty good amount of snow up there on Saturday and through Sunday. Probably the largest snow storm of the season so far. I know you guys said you'd keep an eye on the weather, but I just wanted to put that out there, as it's like 90% sure to impact the trip. For one, it'll make the drive up the dirt roads a bit interesting. And for two, it'll flood the town with flatlanders that are unprepared, play in the snow on the side of the highways, drive like idiots, and fill up the local businesses. It's good for the local economy, but bad for those looking for a fun and quiet getaway.  :o

I'll keep an eye on it. I won't mind playing in the snow, but I'll definitely avoid the town at that point.

I think that why he and I were talking about turning around and heading back out the way we came... To avoid the idiots in town as much as possible.

I trust RIKRONGs spidey senses...... And I would never ask him to put his family in harms way. I am sure that we will do our hazard analysis and chose our action accordingly...

And a trip report....

I think it was 13 Xs... In snow and mud and ICE (Some scary ice on the side of a really steep hill) and fog, so thick... well it was thick! All made it out and hopefully had a great time. I know I did...

Photo 1) The line up at the SP (Start point)

And If its any indication of how cold it was

Photo 2) Look at the temperature reading......

We had a great run from Apple Valley to Big Bear on Sunday with the SoCal Xterra Owners FB group. There was some snow, some slick packed snow, and a ton of fun.

Such a fun trip! Thanks to everyone there for making this such a memorable day. The snow play was great, and there was a perfect amount of water and mud on the trails to make it super fun, but not be worried that anyone was going to get stuck.
