Comments:  Joining SCCX has been one of the best things I've done other than buying my X.  Originally it was purchased as a primary work vehicle to take tools back and forth to the jobsites and providing power in the field via the inverter for charging cordless tools.  Since then, it has become our primary family outing vehicle for camping and long road trips.

Thanks.  Its been a tough 4 yrs since I've had it and its finally running good.  went through overheatings, 1 complete rebuild/balance, 1 top end rebuild, oil leaks, slipping clutch, out of work, and so on.

Irwin, I would love to talk to you about the engine building you did. I am always looking to improve the VG33 & it looks like you have done a great job of it.

What type of power increase have you realized - HP & TQ
Where did you get the injectors?
Where did get the ECU upgrade?
Was everything you did worth the cost, cause I know it wasn't inexpensive?
Did you put performance cams in?
Who did the work?

Thanks! Great build  8)

Thanks.  Its nice t see someone interested in motors, the heart of any vehicle.  I've done most of the work myself out of necesity since day 1 because I knew I was going to keep it for a long time.  I think I'm making @ 210 hp and 230 ft.lbs naturally aspirated.  I like to drive on the fast side, set the pace, but on steep fwy climbs, like going north on the 15 or 5 fwy, I woukd really struggle to maintain speed even in 3rd gear.  The port and polish, exh.manifolds inclded, allow motor to breathe more.  But to make power, you need more fuel.  RC Engineering cleaned, balanced and blueprinted the 170cc side-feed injectors ($240).  I think now, I would rather upgrade to a set of 240cc or higher injectors for even more power.  The fuel pump was upgraded to a new-to-market Aeromotive Stealth 340 in-tank pump ($165) and had the ECU reprogrammed by JET Performance ($320).  This allows for a wider injector pulse width (stays open longer per cycle) and modifies/advances the timing curves.

I definitetly, absolutely need those Doug Thorley headers bad (@$500).  These would greatly improve torque, and with header wrap and hi-heat ceramic coatings, the scavenging effect would be massive.  The O. E. manifolds are a horrible design, with outlet flow reduced to 60% compared to inlets.  You can physically see that they were designed from the outside in.  I'm thinking about getting the Jim Wolf Technology cams or Bullfrog Gude Performance cams ($450 either one) to help with torque on the low to mid-range power.  Right now I'm getting 12/15 mpg, emissions are ultra clean on the 15 mph run, CO2's are low but Hydrocarbons (Hc) are 650 ppm on the 25 mph run, a bit on the high side I think.  Does anyone else ever read these numbers?

Bought a Diamond Antenna mount, model K412S for my soon-to-be 2M and UHF dual-band radio.  Bought massive 4"polyurethane bumpstops for the rear also.  Gotta make custom mounts for them though.

Also bought a set of high performance Nology HotWires Sparkplug Wires ($280).  They have several built-in capacitors that require advancing the timing by 4 deg. and delivers a whooping 45,000 volt spark similar to an MSD box.  Allows for a much cleaner fuel burn and picked up an estimated 2hp and 5 lbs. torque.  Right now, I think I am between 240 to 245 hp and 270 lbs. torque froM a 1st gen VG33E.  She REALLY accelerates now.  Need headers and cams now.

After finally getting the truck to run perfect, some idiot got t-boned, then smashed into me.  I expect the my insurance to total it out but will wait to see what the other driver's insurance will do.

On the positive side, I have officially acquired the unicorn:  2013 Xterra PRO4X in Midnight Armor (metallic charcoal gray).
This one will be my new project for the time being.  Now I need some SCCX stickers to start.

Finally added the ARB HD Add-A-Leaf  to the Med. Duty leaf pack set in the rear and paired it with the Med Duty front spring.  Truck now sits higher 1.5" FR and 2.5" RR.  It feels sooo much better.  Not as stiff as I was told.  Now how do I stuff 315/75 R16s in there?
Working on modifying my old 1st gen sliders to fit the 2nd gen and adding a light pre-runner style light bar.

I tried to maximize the melt-mod and even melted and redid the mud flaps to allow the bigger tires but they DO still rub a bit almost at full lock to the right only.

Assessment:  great grip in any weather but X now feels much heavier (and they are louder).

These tires look great but they are very loud at very low speed, like cruising in a parking lot.  You can hear every knub.  They are actually quiet on the freeway.  No drone inside the cabin.

Just adding the spacer with stock UCA's was a pain, can't imagine what it would be like with heavy springs. Good luck.

Would I need to upgrade my lower control arms at this point then, before I get the spacers?

Irwin...find out what type of HD springs you are looking at.  Are they stock length HD springs, or longer?  If they are stock, you may be able to use the spacers.

If the springs are longer, which means they also provide lift as well as stiffer spring rate, then no, you don't want to use the spacers.  Longer springs and spacers will make the truck difficult, if not impossible to align.  Which is when you upgrade the upper control arms, not the lower.

Think of it like this:

Stock height springs, add spacers for lift.

Taller springs, no spacers and possible UCA upgrade.

Hope this helps!

Just got me some new tires!  $985 installed, mounted and balanced.  Yokohama changed the V-pattern on it's Geolander MT so I switched to Rolling Big Power (RBP) Repulsor MT in a 305/70/16 on OEM PRO-4X rims.  These RBP tires also have a directional V-pattern for evacuating water faster.  The rubber blocks (voids) are not as open as the Geolanders so these Repulsor's should last longer.  They seem quiet too.

Ok, so it's been 8 mos. since I bought the tires, they've been great on traction but with regular rotation, they may not last over a year.  They are wearing fast & getting noisier.

Also, replaced all 3 timing chains, sprockets, guides, tensioners, water pump & hoses at 112k, two weeks later, clutch began to slip so I installed a Jim Wolf Tech upgrade kit, friction disc is considerably larger in diameter compared to the Clutch Masters kit.

wish i had known you were getting JWT parts, I used to work there so I can get them at cost.

Digging the redtop VQ.

Did you replace the flywheel too? that thing is pretty worn down, just like that metal clutch disk.

Can't wait til my clutch goes out so I can get rid of the dual mass flywheel and go to a JWT setup.

In the picture, you can see that I only resurfaced 2/3 of the flywheel surface, more than enough for the new JWT clutch.  Had a machine shop in riverside do it on a Sat morning, reassembled everything on Sun, ready for work on Mon.

One year after buying the RBP 305/70/16 tires & it's time to replace them.  They wore out fast & got very loud.  Instead, I bought another set, Nitto Ridge Grappler AT that hopefully will last longer.  $295/75/16 (33.5") at $219 each from DiscountTiresDirect.com.  so far these are even better than expected.  Smooth ride, stable & very quiet.

Looks good, curious why you didn't just weld in the hitch and recovery points around the original bumper? Either way I think it looks great

Truck runs CONSIDERABLY cooler, especially with the 3 big hood vents, Mishimoto thermostat, Nismo radiator cap & blue silicone radiator hoses.  I also doubled up on all the hose clamps to whithstand the higher coolant pressures.

Almost done welding in gussets & internal framework.  Then I can start on the double-swing arm...

(Yes, the welds are ugly, some have several passes... but it's mostly 3/16" & ΒΌ" steel.  I'm making sure the weld is penetrating.  Otherwise, it won't be strong.  Looking for strenght, not beauty.  Ok, here come the criticrsms, the memes, etc...)

OK this sucks but somehow it happened again.  The timing chain jumped a tooth again.  This is the 3rd time I'll be re-doing this on my X.   But with help from Clark over at Jim Wolf Technologies in El Cajon, CA, I was able to find some interesting facts about the VQ40DE and similarities with the Skyline  GT-R VR38DETT engines built by Nismo's Takumi division.  (JWT is currently building several IMSA race-class VQ40DE motors for Nissan).
1.)   Everyone knows that the early 2nd genic steroids add bad timing chains and timing chain guides and tensioners.   Because Nissan shares the VQ blocks with the 350Z, 370Z, rare JDM Juke-R, Skyline GTR, Pathfinder, Frontier and Xterra's, they all have interchangeable parts for the engines.
2.)   The pictures below shows a Nissan Skyline timing chain and main timing chain guide compared to an aftermarket replacement.  Notice the additional gussets and beefiness of the newer OEM units compared to aftermarket parts.   The  OEM Nissan Skyline VR38 timing chain is also beefier & slightly heavier that the aftermarket timing chain.  JWT alsp said that the '03-06 350Z VQ35DE (and VQ35HR) parts flow more oil & have improved cooling, starting the that head gasket designs.  That a Tech Support bulletin that shows very detailed pictures on where to grind away aluminum for improved cooling, head gasket differences between the many engine block models and even the type of head bolt that should be used.
3.)  Also pictured is a new Stillen Racing Aluminum main pulley for both VQ35, VQ40 & VR38 motors.   Available as a standard-size replacement or an undersized version (which requires a smaller diameter of serpentine belt, yields 1-2hp more).  The difference is quite literally 1/2 lb vs. 16 lbs of rotating mass, good for 3-4hp/5-6 ft. Lbs of torque.
