Title: Cargo Shelf
Post by: Toro on November 04, 2012, 06:10:07 PM
I refuse to pay over $400 for a cargo area shelf. So I decided to build one myself. It's not pretty, it's not perfect, but it's big, strong and not that heavy.

I started out with 40ft of 16g 1" square tubing

I chopped it up, welded it up. I decided to go with expanded metal for the bottom and I'm glad I did.

I've must have dropped over 200 tac welds every place that mesh meets the frame.

Just need to add the legs and giver her a coat of paint.

Very nice! I'm going to have you teach me to weld better!Nice job! Wanna tackle a winch mount? I can only hope that it turns out 1/4 nice as this basket!

I just figured out a way to mount the basket and maintain the use of the retractable cargo cover. Let's see how this goes.

Looks much sturdier than the PVC version I made for Big Bear. ;D

Got to work on her a little this weekend.

Just got to tac in the gussets and finish weld.
Now I have to decide between powdercoating or rattle can.

Guys, I'm flattered.
Would you really be interested in picking one of these up? The big plus is that you can retain the use of the retractable cargo cover.

I'm interested but I'd like to see it in person, get a feel for how sturdy it is....and then figure out how to get surfboards on my roof....

But yes, very interested....and I just saw that you're going to be attending the Dec 1st xcursion...hopefully you'll have it installed by then!

Thanks!

:)

Looks like the back portion drops into the track and the front "smaller" square foot will bolt down?

A bit of a necro but I was curious how much space was under there. Any chance of fitting a pair of the smaller Action Packers side by side underneath? Also thirded as per making more. It looks like it might work out well for me, if, you know, you made another...

I can defiantly make you one of these. I'm in the middle of a roof rack right now but it can be next. Let me know how serious you are.

I'm definitely in for one Danny if your willing.  I'm planning on buying an ARB fridge in the future, so I might hit you up for one of these.  Great looking product!  Definitely stout looking.

I love The ARB Edition. It's rocked Big Bear, The Mojave Road, and Moab. All without a hitch, slip, or shake.

Not too heavy, 25-30lbs?? Ghost?

It's made off 16g but its fully boxed and welded so its pretty damn strong.
