Comments:
Registered here a looooooong time ago and never became active on the site. Re-registered here a few years ago and have become more active. I have been fortunate and have benifited from the generosity of many.
A very special thanks to
-John at Whitknuckleoffroad for making the best sliders ever for our rigs
-Steve at Frontrunner outfitters for producing a stellar aluminum roof rack for our rigs.
-Steevo at RuggedRocks for offering the best customer service and simply being bad ass.
-ChrisHaynes, SoCalX, SteveC, MotoPig77 for the crazy awesome hook ups!
As our family grows, this rig has gone from mini rock crawler to to full on Expo/Overland rig. We love bugging out and setting up camp in the middle of no where.

pretty cool shots Danny!!
(pardon the pun :P)
-
That's one Bad Arse rig!!
-
Very nice, Danny. These front bumper with low-profile hoops are really growing on me. How was the lead time?
-
Thanks guys...
Like 75% of my build, the bumper was bought used. KMA doesn't have a good reputation for quality finishing. The design is stellar but execution is a bit rough. That was evident when I took position of it. I spent 2 days with a grinder and a flap disc cleaning up welds, shaping angles and corners. I got a good price on it so I was okay putting in the work. I would have lost my mind if I would have paid full price for what I got.
-
I'm all about the low profile light bar. As matter of fact, Toro's bumper is my favorite bumper on the market. Come to think of it, Toro has a lot of parts on his truck that I'm envious of. I really like the White Knuckle sliders too. Don't get me wrong, I love my new bumper. But the grass is always greener.

OK I'll bite what is it. Looks like a pressure tank. For your on-board air?
-
Nice!
What brand tank is that?
Sent while mobile, typos likely.
-
Yep, air tank to complete the OBA set up. It'll be mounted just inside the rear bumper. This guy is about 30" x 8" so it should tuck nicely. Ill finaly be able to compliment that compressor on crack.
-
I'm sure I'll be asking you more about the tank and compressor in the future. Nice addition
-
+1 on the tank, where'd you find such a long skinny 5gal? I needs me some of that for my oba
Not sent with the stupid auto guide app
-
Its a tank made for low riders and bagged rigs. There designed to tuck next to framr rails. Google "air ride suspension" and youll find a ton of places that sell. I was going for the 9 gallon but its kind of pricey. Ill eventualy get a second 5 gallon on a coupler. This way I can run the 5 gallon for fill ups then add the second 5 gallon if I need air tools.
-
Johnson Valley looks good on my rig!

In many ways!!!
-
so how long does your compressor take to fill that tank?
-
I havnt mounted it yet. Ive just been a bit lazy.
-
Yea I've got a lot of free time lately so all I've been doing is working on projects. My compressor takes about 3 and a half minutes to 120 psi on a 5 alum tank i picked up. I really need a welder to make stuff.
-
I got an Oxyacetylene setup and a POS 90amp wire feed from Harbor Freight. You are welcome to use either anytime.
-
Ran Cat5e cable from under the seat to a coupler under the power plugs. This will let me plug the HAM mic right to the dash.

Nice, been looking at doing something similar because I want to mount the head unit above the rear view mirror.

I got the bender, the notcher, I picked up an 8ton air/hydraulic ram and got the adapter squared away. Got me a big air compressor too. Picked up a bunch of angle iron to make a cart for it. As soon as the cart is built, ill be making full hydro bends and notching like a pro. I cant freakin wait!

Transfer Case rear output seal is next. Maybe this weekend. I'm hesitant because I just changed the TC oil.
-
Not fair Toro. You are too good with the half shaft R&R. But your rear TC seal is leaking???

Very little, yes. Gonna get to it before I put my skids back on.

Came home late last night with a rear diff hemorrhaging oil. Ment to look at it this morning but now it's raining. Was thinking it's the pinion seal but it looks to be coming from above. Thought about a busted brake line but it definitely smells like gear oil.
The only thing I can think of is that I blew the seal around the wiring bung for the locker.
I have to wait till it stops raining and get under there.

Hey looks like you hit the flange someway. Same thing I did. Remember the time, you were hanging out the window to see where that awful metal to metal sound was coming from ;D and you decided it was the buggered flange against the drive shaft. I destroyed the seal by trying to pull the flange away from the other piece that fit inside it.

Looks like The Kings new shop

That's the one and only Showtime. It's back in the shop getting an LS7 (with after market race block) installed. What a beast!

Rear spring perches were cut off and the diff was rotated for better driveline angles. Diff shock mounts were removed, boxed and raised up out of the way. Upper mounts were redone and raised to offset the lowers and strengthen. Rear right shock relocated to rear of diff to avoid oncoming hits.....again.....

Really nice job there those welds are super nice! I was wondering what kind of a formula did you use to set the new angle of the diff and did remounting your rear shocks add any overall height?

Maybe swap the horns for a crown? ;)

Got the latest Frontrunner Rack today. It's only about 1.5 inches lower, but it makes a world of difference.
(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/20/11edf22821d5c2b49aaeec45f34a2292.jpg)(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/20/45fe0d3db94f053d8206f60c07e10d69.jpg)
I'm glad they retained it's ability to carry a table undeneathe it.
They are still toying with the idea of lowering it further and extending the front.
I also picked up their 13 gallon water tank that fits perfectly behind the rear seats.(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/20/42e6c54623d292c639b8207b644cc0d7.jpg)
Here it is with the fridge...it's a snug fit but it works well.
You all should consider one of these tanks. They are perfect! The added weight is right over the diff too.
Give Steve at frontrunner a call.

Interesting. Can you play ping pong on that table? ;D
I do like that water tank.

That is a pretty spiffy rack Toro, but I would imagine it can get pretty expensive when you start adding all of the accessories/clamps/attachments? That water tank is pretty cool, too. Is there any way to pressurize it?

If your pressurizing a tank, it'd be best to do it on a tank that's mounted high and assisted by gravity. This tank, when full, weighs over 100lbs and will be in the rig. The best way to get pressure out of something like this is to run a pump on the outlet. The tank comes with a 1/2 I.D. ball valve so it will flow like a mo-fo.
We have 3 kids and do an ass load of camping. Our current 5 gallon drinking water setup doesn't cut it anymore and needed a serious upgrade. With all the hiking, camelbacks and cooking pasta between all of us, this should hold us for 4-5 days....
....shoot, I might even be able to wash my hands from time to time.

In 6 days of camping, we went through, just over, 8 gallons of water. Perfect for our growing family. The hose is accessible from the passenger rear door and is gravity fed to your container. This is a game chager for our crew. Very excited this is with us.

Nice...5 gallon reserve. 8)
-
What anti-microbial steps can you take with the tank? I didn't read up to see what it was made of. Thinking a nice UV light might work on that clear tubing.
-
The tubing is removed, washed and kept in the freezer. The tank is emptied, sun dried and stored under vacuum.
-
It also helps that the tank is black, it helps prohibit the growth of stuff.
-
Finally decided to start knocking stuff off my list. Whipped up a couple of frames and picked up some slides for the fridge.
Fridge frame is fully welded and the outer base is only tacked.

I do have a plan for that other side, but that's where I normally carry an ass load of tools. I'm a little torn as to how to proceed.

I found a second one for parts. The compressor might be a little beyond repair......but considering trying to have it fixed.

I've been busy.......
Some of you may know that I was blessed with the prototype Frontrunner replacement roof rack. I have been sporting the rack for a couple months and I'm in love. It's strong, sleek and just plain BA. I have had a nagging feeling in the back of my head so I took matters into my own hands.
What I did was cut about 2 inches off of the brackets and rewelded them back together. I also purchased 2 extended side bars and one slat (cross bar) to extend the rack about 8 inches on the leading edge.
The rack now sits (at the center of the roof) about 3" above the roof. I also used the extended front end to flush a light bar under the front of the rack. This will keep it safe and any contact with over head obstacles will be taken by the rack and not the light bar.
I think this looks a million times better. I hope the guys at FR agree and offer this modification as an option.
First the removal, measuring and prep. Can't screw this step up. I used masking tape to keep me in check.
Several cuts later and 4 cut off wheels we are ready to weld.
I made about 50 2" beads.
Blew the rack apart and added the slats to extend it.

-

I agree with this statement. This looks so much better! I really hope frontrunner agrees. I'd post this up in the original forum on TNX and let them see the comments from everyone saying how much better it is being low profile like this. Plus that light bar location is SLICK!
-
This is exactly what they should have built, good work Danny. I know it probably doesn't fit with their "gotta fit a table" company mantra but not everyone wants or needs to carry a picnic table on the roof.
I really like the tight fit of the lightbar, looks really nice and clean. I do like the frontrunner lightbar cover/ flip down glare shield they sell, don't know of a way to do that for the curved bar though.

Man I've been waiting for something like this to come out for a long time. Out rigs sit high enough as it is no need adding those crazy basket tops that extend 4" or more above the substandard OEM tube rack.

I've always thought the Web site image was miss leading. The brackets look smaller or lower than they actually are.
If you look at the 3/4 image taken from underneath, the rear section bracket has a cut out for the side loading table. My revision removes this space all together.

Those are nice. Now come the questions...I assume they come on solid when lights are on. The description says they flash, so I guess I'm a little confused. Are they supposed to flash or just stay solid when used as dust lights? I started reading a little after you posted and no one really said this. I'm probably over thinking, but thanks for your help.

Rick - typically the "torch mode" is a separate input wire that will override your selected flash pattern and force the light all the way on when it receives a 12V positive input to that particular wire. So basically, you can hook up the light to flash on one switch (using the internal flasher mechanism within the light), and connect the "torch mode" wire to your brake light and/or running lights. You can engage the switch to make the light flash on the pattern you've selected, and the light will burn solid if you hit the brakes or have your headlights/running lights on. You can also install a switch on the "torch mode" wire so that it will only illuminate with your brakes/running lights when you want it to. Most of these also have a "solid on" setting within the flash patterns, so you can select that particular flash pattern and simply use it like a regular light also (but you can use the torch mode wire the same way and not even hook up the standard flash pattern wire, it's all up to you). It's a cool setup, and can be done many many different ways.

Looks awesome!
Is the alternator just because or was yours dying? Looks fancy regardless.
-
Snorkel looks awesome. What's the output on the new alternator?
-
I want the new alternator to compliment the battery setup.
The new alternator puts out 130amps @ idle. 180 amps max and completely water proof.
I'll be running 2 batteries in the X and a 3rd in the, future, trailer.
-
Damn... that's a nice alternator!
-
Snorkel looks great. Kinda reminds me on Mr. Megaphone.
Probably too young to remember that. :(

You the man Toro nice work as always
-
What's the difference in output vs. the OEM? Reason I'm asking is I'm looking at keeping a dual battery system charged without over charging putting too much stress on the system especially when under load. Other thing I'm concerned about is over charging the battery bank. One area I readily admit I'm not too versed in is electronics and it's related systems with our vehicles. Knowledge is power so lay some knowledge on me!
-
I'm drooling over here. That's a bad ass alternator! 8)
I'll wait for your first hand review before I buy one (and maybe wait until I start having problems with my factory one, which probably won't be long with water crossings and my dual battery setup). Hopefully it's more reliable than the Mean Green ones for the 1st gens, but it sure does look like a quality piece of equipment!
-
The OE alternator cranks out 110 amps max and not sure how many at idle.
The electrical system needs about 13.5-14.5volts to charge or maintain the batterie(s). Add to this the task of running all electrical components installed on the rig.
The alternator works 2 fold in that it will run your accessories and charge your batteries as needed. When you install a second battery your available current is now being consumed by another "accessory". Adding a hi output alternator makes everything jive better and charge your batteries faster.
This alternator lives 14+ volts,
(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/24/c26ffcce140726db76db63e41359b6b8.jpg)
can charge several batteries and run many accessories all at the same time. Couple this with a good charge controller, and you have a very robust electrical system.
I've only had this for a nearly a day but I already feel like my rig fires up faster. Like a brand new battery.
Maybe it's the placebo effect but I'm very happy and have peace of mind running OBA, winch, the fridge, lights.
My ARB compressor sounds A LOT louder and the hum of the pumps seam to be cranking more air, cycling faster and less labored.
-
Thanks for the update, I'm thinking I will be picking your brain a bit more here in the very near future.
-
Of course dude!
-
Did you have to wire up any heavier fuses?
-
Nope
-
Here's a little info I shared on TNX covering alternators.
Maybe someone here might find it helpfull.
.........
The Mean Green is similar to an OE running higher output. It's still susceptible and has similar limitations and weaknesses to the OE unit.... Water being the primary one. DC Power weaves the internals in a completely different, unique,t way allowing them to be more resilient and robust and even run under water.
Although they put out less juice, they should seriously be considered when upgrading.
Above are types of winding.
The 1st is a 3 phase basic wind. This is the industry common but is hosed by heat.
The 3rd is a 6 phase wind capable of very hi-output but also can lose 30% capacity to heat.
The middle is also a 6phase but the wind is called a "hairpin" and it's ability to pass air through the coil, instead of around the coil, makes it incredibly efficient. This is what DC and RuggedRocks is putting out.
The OE market (Denso) is going this direction on the hi end line now being placed in the newest vehicles. DC power is one of the only companies capable of obtaining and using Denso's technology.
The best of the best currently being produced. In 5 years, every OE will be using this technology/wind.

I haven't had much confidence in the OE Alt because I'm replacing batteries every few years. I was looking for something new and better. $600 is a bit out of my price range so this unit fits the bill perfectly.

If I may pontificate please. Just a few 'facts', OK, there MY facts, about batteries, amps and charging systems.
No matter how big your alternator is, it only flows enough amps to meet your demands. (or burns up)
Different types of Batts., even of the same size, have different charging rates i,e, lead acid batts. might take 30 amps or less when charging, where a gel-cell might take 45 amps, and a glass-mat takes 70. I say 'take', because you can't force feed a battery. And all batts reduce that charging rate as they near full charge.
So if you are charging 3 glass mat batts that are all, over 30% drained you could pull 210 amps of charge for half an hour or so.
If you are charging 3 lead acid batts from even 40% drained they would pull 90 amps for an hour or so than taper off untill full charge.
YMMV, i kinda made up the numbers to make the point.
Big amps is a selling point but rarely used, unless you're running big glass mat batts or an arc welder. In either case, at 250 amps, the engine would have to be running at 3000 rpm or the torque of the alternator would spin the belt, or would kill the engine.
180 amps is plenty of poop for recharging and running refers. The little extra voltage that Toro is getting is nice for pushing a little more oomph in his accessories.
I welcome all your inferior comments and silly questions :D
Sorry for the Jack Toro, I meant well :-*
-
I agree Randy, I just wanted a kick in the pants and something much more reliable.
-
Yeah, I think you did perfect. I'm on my 3rd and 4th OE alt. I'm going to get my money back on my spare and buy the one you got.

As some of you know, I've had a trailer build on my mind. I've sourced everything I need for a frame and have been waiting on a good/cheap set of rubber. This past weekend, I was able to pick up 3 33" MTR's in great shape.

How cute! It's so yittle! :D
A comment from the a structural engineer in my office. Consider trussing on each side to the hitch tube, you have a week spot that could bend both sides around the center tube. Angle or 3/16" plate would take care of it.

I absolutely agree...hence the
Rudimentary frame mock up
....statement.
The front will be triangulated and all joints will be gusseted. I intend to 45 bevel every joint to allow for a better weld penetration.
The trailer will be small..very small.
This is my 1st build, and although no corners will be cut, I intend to use this as a learning experience. This trailer will be sold to help fund the build I truly want.
There will also be "C" channel rocking to keep the frame from twisting.

Spend a little time over on the Tventure forum...lots of great frame tips over there.

True but if you pull that cover off you can come down this way and get it all dirty....

As most know....
Chunks fished out of diff fluid.

The King and I tore her apart.

Pinion gear was good.

Ring gear is good

Found 1 busted spider on each side. 2 busted gears.

The previous diff had some custom machining done to fit (at the time) a unique gear. A Jeep gear.
So the new gear wouldnt just drop onto the new diff. We took the new diff apart.....

........and put the new one on the lathe.

Got it all squared away and set up. Backlash is good!

All dialled in and ready to rock!

This was a catastrophe avoided due to proper maintenance. Stay on top of your rig...or under your rig...especially if you wheel hard.
Special thanks to The King for squeezing my in at the last moment and teaching me all along.

thank goodness you took care of it before it failed at the wrong place.
-
I'm glad you found that because I'm pretty sure tomorrow somewhere around that gate keeper we all would of heard that dreaded loud bang noise coming from that differential.
-
Thanks for the nice right up and photos Danny. And I love a happy ending. (No pun, grow up you guys lol)
-
Popped the inner CV on Holcomb last week.
I tore into it this morn......

I even had a brand new CV boot laying around.

If it had to break I'm sure glad it broke where it did and not inside your differential.
-
OUCH! :o

Haven't visited this site in a while. As some know, I got a new job and a new place. Not much has changed on the X but my trailer has, finally, been getting some love.
Good size garage and a small home shop have been a dream come true.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180614/c82009a52c2ea09ece529cad949c277b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180614/23b60a326908ceb81631fa56e9a1df10.jpg)
