Title: Our Adopted Trail 2N02 - May 23rd!!!
Post by: Motorpig77 on May 13, 2015, 02:58:25 AM
Hey guys,

I am planning to run the SCCX adopted trail 2N02 next Saturday May 23rd.  My plan is pick up as much trash and fix as many signs as I can.  This would be a day trip for me, but of course, if anyone wanted to join, the possibility of camping for the night is always there!

Let me know who is available / interested and I'll put together more info! Thinking about a 9am start time and finishing the trail around 3pm at the latest.

Attendees:
1. Motorpig77
2. Randy...aka... "The Duffman"
3. Alex
4. Lbslide
5. Verg of Big Bear Proper (the one I met on my prerun)
6. Steve C ??? <--- He's still waffling...

Thanks a ton Clint...please make sure you track both your commute and actual trail hours.  If you could also make note of any major areas of trash, or illegal trail breaks that would be great.

I know Terry has been the point person for the AAT program, but with his travel/retirement plans, we as a group may need to seek out a new representative/group of reps to promote 2N02's care and maintenance.

Also, track hours for the kids, as the calculate out at 2x the normal adult rate.

The next time we all get together at Randy's, I'd like to get a group sense for the direction of the AAT program.

I know Big Bear is a drive, esp for the SD folk.  It is a commitment, and for the most part we have been on again/off again supporters.  I know Terry has tried to organize more than a few trips to the area, with minimal support.  The best efforts seem to be planned in advance runs of Rattlesnake Canyon, etc.

How does everyone feel we are supporting the AAT effort?  Above/below expectations?

With participation at a peak right now, maybe we could collectively decide on a continued/discontinued approach so the select group of individuals involved with this don't feel that their efforts are in vain?

Here is my thought:  pick two dates a year that this group of website supporters camp/clean up 2N02, communicate these dates to Greg Hoffman, the AAT/USFS liason, so expectations are appropriately set/understood/etc.

I know...I know...this is organizing and herding cats...buuuuut, this is more than just putting stickers on trail signs and "saying" we support AAT.

It does require some sort of consistent effort...of which we have all (myself included) been neglecting.

Thoughts?

Sorry for the threadjack MPG...but your post got me thinking and typing (only one cup of coffee!!)  :D :D :D

I like this idea, a lot!
Set dates give me the opportunity to plan and most importantly submit my vacation requests far in advance.

Sadly, I have not been on "our" trail.

I forgive you Taquito! :)

As for my two cents on this thread jack...as for myself, I didn't know we had an ATT until I finally scrolled all the way down in the forums a few months back.  I think the twice a year planned day trip / overnighters are a great idea! I'll give a status report on our trail after next weekend and hopefully we can make a decision in the near future about how to handle this part of our club!

I would LOVE to come out on Saturday and run this trail and help cleanup. Like Steve, I too have never run "our" trail. :(

But unfortunately, my wife has some family in town from Oregon all of Memorial Day weekend and we already have plans with them, so I'll have to take a rain check. :(

I will bring cutting tools, wrenches, generator and an air compressor.  I WANT THAT BUICK GONE!

Randy, if possible, since I'll have the whole family, I'd rather keep this trip to clean up and some exploring.  BUT we can definitely plan a date in June to go tackle that Buick!!!

Alright, I did a pre-run of the trail today...All and all, not to bad, however...we will be spending quite a bit of time at the first shooting area.  There are a couple camp sites which aren't bad at all but still need a little attention.  I did not see any graffiti anywhere on the trail, so that's a bonus! Oh, and the Oldsmobile is still there! I took a couple photos so everyone has an idea what it looks like.  My plan is to get as much of the firing range cleaned up as possible even if there are people out there shooting at the time.

I met a couple on the trail who were actually headed to the shooting area and they may be joining us on Saturday!

Once the goneMOAB dust settles, I'd like to touch base with Terry and a group of like minded individuals to re-calibrate SCCX's non-club-club commitment to the AAT Program.

Thanks again Clint.  :)

Alright, Had a chance to look at the track, at the end of our trail, we have options! We can continue forward and drive another 15 miles on hard packed dirt and pop out in Yucca and then take the I-10 in the homeward direction...OR...and this is my preferred option, We double back on our trail and everyone can head back out through Big Bear!

As of right now, I plan on camping on one of the campsites out there, depending on which one is free of course. Anyone who wants to plan on camping is more than welcome to join us! There are campfire restrictions in place so no fire will be had...and the temps are supposed to drop into the mid thirties saturday night.

If anyone has any objections to that plan, please let me know so we can figure out the best option.

I would love to join you guys on trail cleanup this weekend but I had made other plans for the long weekend. I'm hoping to be up there next weekend for either a camping trip, or a trash cleanup for whatever I find along the 2N02 route including the shooting areas all the way to Yucca. I might even head up there this Friday during the day if I have time. It pains me to see so many shotgun shells and targets left in those areas. I'll police up whatever's left over from your guys' clean up weekend.  I'll be putting the Trasharoo and the basket on the roof to extra good use.

Guys...I've got a very busy three weeks ahead, so we will be out of action until mid June.  Maybe up for a weekday clean up sometime in late June, early July...which is perfect weather time in the mountains.  Thanks to all of you (esp MPG) for the coordinated clean up efforts.

If this looks like it might become more organized, we can speak with Greg Hoffman and possibly set up another AAT Orientation, which was an extremely "behind the scenes" look at the USFS operations in and around Big Bear.

It depends on when we finish everything, but I was thinking of taking Radford Truck Trail back down the mountain afterwards. Just a thought if we still want some dirt. :)

We had a great time and did a lot of great work on the trail today! Randy, Nilda, Alex, Sir John of Fullerton, myself, jonathan and Josie all met in Big Bear and had some time to talk and get to know each other a little better before heading up the trail. We started at the first Campsite and then ended our day at the first shooting area.  This area was an absolute disaster as many of you saw in the previous photos! We had planned on pushing through to the end of the trail, but the amount of trash we took out of the shooting didn't allow for that.  Sadly, there is still a decent amount of trash out there and also past that area on the trail.  If anyone else wants to plan another run out there, let me know!

A few highlights of the trip...

On the way up the trail, my daughter pointed out a Jack Rabbit about twenty feet off the trail.  I stopped and was able to back up to get a good view.  Since the group was spread out on the trail at this time, we had time to enjoy this moment.  To our amazement and delight, this jack rabbit stayed still and posed for pictures for the better part of two minutes...as soon as we started to pull away, he turned around around and hopped back into the forest!

Once we all ended up at the first shooting area, we did our best work!

The Crew took a much needed lunch break and we even had a little time left over to take a group shot!
(http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn186/Motorpig77/2N02/IMG_20150523_125424687_HDR_zpsc6wkruvq.jpg) (http://s304.photobucket.com/user/Motorpig77/media/2N02/IMG_20150523_125424687_HDR_zpsc6wkruvq.jpg.html)

After filling the bed of my truck with everything from old TVs, about 50 fire extinguishers, 20 propane tanks, the hood of a car, and one "Friends" DVD, we filled as many trash bags as we could fit in the other three rigs and we headed back down the trail to air up! Now this is where "Right Foot Randy" had a revelation!!!! He FORGOT his Trail bag which had his compressor in it!!! Good thing we all still like him! :)

Then we went to the Big Bear Discovery center and downloaded the trash into a Forest Service Dumpster.  We all said our goodbyes and headed down the 330! Oh yeah, so after getting up super early and putting in a hard days work...an 11 y/o girl will fall asleep in about two minutes!

Nice pics Clint.  I'm still trying to figure out how to up load Nilda's shots.  Photo Bucket changed it's format or whatever and I'm back to square one until I find a 12 year-old to help me.
BTW I think Jonathan and Jocelyn get X2 hours for a family total of 50 hours.  Well done gang!

Just curious the sign that had the sccx stickers on it there should be a tall 2 post sign behind it. Was it still standing? Last time I went by it was down and I did my best to dig two new holes and stand it back up but it really needs to the concrete broken off the legs and redone. Thanks for all the hard work guys and gals.

Folks remember it is door to door hours.   From the moment you leave the house to the moment you return.   And yes kids receive double hours.

Thanks all.

We about maxed out on trash this time around, so if a second group decides to go out midweek or another time, we piled the rest of the trash at the shooting area. There are some larger things in the pile, so a truck or trailer could be helpful, but there is still enough smaller stuff to throw into bags.

Otherwise for the long term, if we have a group go out every couple months it should be really easy now to keep the trail clean.

I'm thinking to do another run up there in a few weeks and bag some of the trash, then I'll head down Radford and take a look at some easier trail options down by the 38 for CANVAZ. There are some yellow post sites that I'll try to mark where they are.

Just saw the pictures. Looks like you guys got a good amount done. Unfortunately I wasn't able to check out 2N02 this past weekend, even though I was up there, as time didn't allow. I was able to pick up some trash in the areas that we were in though (2N10/2N11 and yellowpost-29). I'll be planning to go before the end of the month on my own to police any trash on a Saturday morning. No weekday meet up for me as I've got a 9-6.

If Clint, Randy, or anyone else knows, were there any posts/signs needed to be replaced? Else the checklist would be the leftover trash at the shooting area, the Buick/Oldsmobile, and combing the rest of the trail.

Richard if you set on a given Saturday, I should be able to join you.

Having two or three groups go up will definitely take care of what's left, maybe spread things out over the summer? :) I'm just thinkin out loud, don't mind me. ;D

I'm thinking either this Saturday or the next, to head up to Big Bear to 2N02 all the way to Yucca Valley area and back via I-10W. I'd be shooting to be up in Big Bear by around 9-10am, head in via Vale Drive at the start of 2N02 and take that all the way out picking up whatever I find and can fit in the X. I'll find out tomorrow whether or not it's this Saturday (6/6) or next Saturday (6/13).

I have a CB Scott (no HAM yet for me), and I saw Richard has one as well. I'm sure we'll be slow enough along 2N02 so you could just meet up with us along the trail; the remaining trash in shooting area will still take a good chunk of time. And I'm open to any start time if it would work better for us.

Decent day cleaning up the shooting area and picking up a few pieces along the road. I would have loved to continue at least to 2N01, but considering the time crunch I wasn't able to do so. Alex and I totaled 5 filled bags plus a few frying pans and a busted drive shaft. I think a pretty good day for a few hours. The shooting area looks a lot better now.

Not sure who to report this to but my total hours driving there and back plus cleanup: 10 hours.

I would be fun to place a couple of game cameras around that spot where they are trashing the area and get some license plate numbers and the heathens that aren't picking up after themselves. It would be fun to have a wall of shame post somewhere conspicuous on the internet for all to see.

Like Richard mentioned, I think we got a good bit done on the range for the two of us, and did some cleaning on the sides of the trail until about 5 miles into the trail before we had to start heading back.

I got some before photos, didn't remember to get some afterwards though
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x326/thegreyhats/SCCX%202N02%202015%20June/CAM00244.jpg)

The new trash since last time was almost all shotgun shells and targets on the hill
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x326/thegreyhats/SCCX%202N02%202015%20June/CAM00246.jpg)

We definitely need a truck or trailer for the bigger stuff
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x326/thegreyhats/SCCX%202N02%202015%20June/CAM00247.jpg)

A driveshaft that was twisted right off and a skidplate, probably not the best of days for either owner:

I might give that hiking trail at the start of 2N02 a try, had some nice views looking out too
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x326/thegreyhats/SCCX%202N02%202015%20June/CAM00249.jpg)

I didn't get any shots of the trail further down, but I went all the way down 2N02 through Burns Canyon out through Yucca Valley, where I met Scott heading up the trail at about Round Valley. I was expecting the trail to be a lot longer, but it turned out to be very manageable.

Found this mine on the side

This has been reported to Ang Cook with AAT.  I did adjust total hours up for Jonathan's and Jocelyn's 2X hours, for a total of 80 total reported hours.

I also grabbed your 6.5 hours for the pre-run on 5/19 Clint.
