I went up to Idyllwild with the family this weekend just to get away and do a whole lot of nothing. I threw up the ladder J-Pole into a nearby pine tree and started hitting repeaters with amazingly clarity with my little Yaesu 5w HT. I could easily hit Laguna, Palomar (All of them), Mission Hills, Coronado, Fallbrook, Oceanside and of course Santiago Peak to include a few others I can't remember. I was able to hit some Palomar repeaters using just the rubber duck and guys could hear me just not super clear. Not too shabby for 5w of output with a decently placed antenna....

I haven't used mine yet, but they seem pretty capable.  Which antenna is that? I've been looking at getting something like that.

Oh, sorry, the J-Pole.  I tried zooming on in on the pictures, but I still couldn't read them clearly.

It's an H-Ladder type J-Pole that was home made by (I believe) one of the guys in Duffman's HAM club.

I've made a couple of those. They are really easy and fun to make, and work surprisingly well.

Here's a gee-whiz question...Do these have to be mounted vertically or could they be mounted horizontally, say, across a roof rack?

They should be vertical and can't be near metal.

What can I bring along to fashion up a couple more of those antennas on the 9th?

I think that the only thing that we don't have is the Female Connector.  Or did yours come with a long tail?
