Sounds fun. We're likely go home improvement project cooperating.
Painting done ... we're good to go!

This was fun while I was stock a couple of years ago ... exciting with lots of tight turns, rocks gardens, and water.  :D

Since this is a two day trip, is there an itinerary for stops along the way or are we just winging it?  I ask 'cause I'm only going for the first day only (my wife is afraid to camp overnight).  Go figure!  I am trying to convince her, though.  Also, what would you guys recommend I bring as far as gear and safety stuff for the X?  I'm kinda new to the offroad thing since it was nothing but racecars in the past for me.

. . .  Also, what would you guys recommend I bring as far as gear and safety stuff for the X?   . . . .

Since we still have not gotten around to writing up a specific page for this (we had a thorough one on the old site) here are a few things to keep in mind (copied from an earlier post, modified and expanded):

- We hang out at the meet spot for maybe half an hour, unless the trip leader is running late.
- Be sure to arrive at the meet fully fueled. This meet spot is at a Chevron station, so top off when you get there.
- Be sure to bring an FRS radio in working condition, with fully charged batteries. It's not a good idea to depend on someone having a spare to loan out. The channel is always the number of the month, with sub-channel always 24. December is the 12th month, so this run it will be Ch. 12, sub-channel 24.
- If you plan to air down your tires be sure to bring something to air them back up with. You'll be glad you aired down on Rattlesnake Canyon. Costco has an inexpensive compressor that works pretty well for $50.
- Even if you don't plan to camp you should always carry adequate water and food for more than one day. There will be a stop for lunch, so lunch food and a camp chair is nice to have.
- Responsible alcohol consumption at the end of the day in camp only, please refrain while on the trail. No illegal drugs at any time please.
- This run ends in Big Bear, which should be a lot colder than the desert where it starts. Plan accordingly. The first time I did this run several of the roads out of Big Bear that night were closed due to snow. This is much earlier in the season, but you never know.
- As for safety equipment, you should always have a first aid kit, flashlight(s), extra batteries, cutting tool(s), shovel, sturdy gloves, blanket. A list of emergency contacts should be on piece of paper in your glove box.
- Your vehicle should have a full-sized spare tire, it should be the same size as (or very close to) your other tires.
- Your vehicle should have recovery points (tow hooks or attachment point) front and rear.
- Camera.
- Most importantly, a sense of adventure.

Are there any changes since the weather got colder now and there's snow up there?  Aside from the need for snow chains?

I think it should be ok for the run in my opinion.  BB should be getting snow next week, but on the day of the run it looks like it won't snow.  I plan on meeting you at the meet spot on Bessemer Rd.

Here's a link to the 10 day forecast for BB Lake.  http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USCA0094?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared

We're going to get another storm this week with some good snow totals and rain!  :o

That trail up the canyon ought to be full of water and snow ... sounds fun.

Title: Re: 12/27-28 Rattlesnake Canyon, Big Bear
Post by: xtoolbox on December 23, 2008, 06:52:28 PM
Yes we're starting off in Rattlesnake Cyn :D

Depending on the time & group at the the Burns Canyon/2n02 intersection those that want to can head up to Big Bear on 2N02 or the other direction (Burns) towards Pioneertown/Yucca Valley.  Doubt we will have enough time to run any trails on saturday in Big Bear but the access route up should be fun.

Bring what you have, no worries about chains:  lunch, food, drinks, and a 4x4 vehicle should do just fine.

ultrapc40 would you mind moving the photos to the picture & video forum to cut down on the clutter  8)

We'll meet you at the trail head at 34.41150,-116.7239 as we're coming up thru Mornogo Valley.

The weather is calling for snow and we'll be near 4000 feet up and Saturday night it ought to hit freezing but not much colder than that. I think the weather is going to make this trip lots of fun!

Me and Diana want to go but have to leave to pick up her kid early  Sunday so we will not be camping Saturday unless we are stuck - I am assuming there is an exit point heading out to Pioneer town- I also am assuming I do not need chains.  ??? ???

yes i would like to go but no snow chains... and its christmas .... too last minute to be able to get a set.  do you guys think a close to stock pathy is okay for this run?  i will bring straps & tools just in case.
You still have Friday - Im sure there will be some places open to buy chains

You don't need chains, 4x4 truck will do fine.

Big Bear is just one option after rattlesnake, some will be heading out toward Yucca Valley.

If you want to go up to BB: even  if cal trans has the chains required for the roads which will most likely be lifted by saturday if you have a 4 wheel drive with M&S tires  (stock on all X's) you're  fine or exempt :D

For those doing big bear I just got here.  Took the back way from orange ave off I10.  Took 5 hours.  I heard the front was even worse.  There was also a chain check but if you have 4wd with snow tires, as you should, you just need to carry chains.  Just an FYI.  I know we aren't taking that road tomorrow.  should be fun.  I'll see you at Bessemer mine rd in the am.  I know frs is 12 24, but I'll also be on cb channel 12 if anyone has that too.

I don't have chains and aren't buying them. I'll run east on the 10 to 62 and then head north though Morongo and Yuca Valley. It it's going to take five hours to do those 30 miles you can count me out! We'll make the effort to be sure but I don't do traffic. If chains are required to come down out of Big Bear I might end up running though to Pioneer Town and then down the east side.

Well sounds like a lot of people are bailing.  Not that I blame you.  Roads today up here were awful.  Since I don't want to deal with these roads again and I don't want to show up to a spot when no one else does, which has happened before, I guess I'm out too.

Glad to hear you and your family had a good time.

The canyon was completely different from the last time we ran it with the snow packing in some of the bumps and hiding rocks. I'll take my flat tire in on Monday for replacement and take some time to practice with my Hi-Lift jack. We had planned on camping out tonight but tonight's expected low is just 9 degrees.

EPIC for sure. Glad we had a 6 truck turn out. This was a perfect run for me to get back into the swing of things.
I'm doing the same thing Paul, leaving the mud as it lays for a few days. Actually i'm waiting for the hobby shop to open up on base on the 2nd, so i can use the lift and power washer to get the undercarrage at the same time.

Thanks again for a great run. Hope to see you all out soon.
