This is a really fun trail. It's covered with trees, there's a tiny stream, and a really cool "squeeze" near the end of the trail. From the trail end you can look out east over the desert valley from some large rock structures.

Difficulty: Moderate, mostly easy but a bit steep and narrow in places. Suitable for stock 4x4 SUVs with high ground clearance. We're driving in the easy direction (east bound). Not much to worry about in the Xterra. Noon and I did this trail solo one day last year. We camped near the very east end at a very small campsite.

Difficulty: Difficult. Trail includes narrow canyons, steep shelf roads, large boulders and sharp rocks. Not super difficult but fairly tough - right about where our trucks perform stock. Some aggressive stock vehicles (like the Xterra) with good articulation might get though, but tow-strap assistance will likely be necessary. I'll have my tow strap and winch.

Or a little push from your friends.

(I was pretty stock back then and this was an optional rock garden with a by-pass on a different Big Bear trail)

Brian, you thinkin of turning around after the rock stream bed just past the pontiac? It gets pretty steep/sloppy after that - will need lockers and clearance!

I made it to the top without lockers.  We had one X with us that was pretty much stock that made it.

Yeah no problem meeting up on saturday for those up there.  How about somewhere near the Seven oaks cutoff?  What's a good spot with a parking lot?

For sunday there are other trails in area that we might run depending on what the group wants?

In the past Heartbreak could be done with some sliders and good tires, lift helps, there are a couple different lines.  Not really stock friendly, but possible if you keep the momentum going on the loose/steep parts you shouldn't need lockers.  Like to check it out, depending on the conditions  (always changing) we can decided at the squeeze loop point who wants to try it or not, no pressure.

I was thinkin of something else, I was out there with some others last month. Past the "pontiac" on the left the trail goes up canyon where there is a rocky streambed thats tricky stock wo sliders - but makeable. Past that the trail got somewhat difficult with ruts, rocks, and incline. I believe the Heartbreak ridge loop is before this!
I'll keep my $.02 in my pocket next time!

Ok great, I'll find a spot around Seven Oaks near the starting point to meet the caravan.  I'll monitor the CB and FRS channels to listen for you guys when you are getting close.

What time do you think the caravan will be at Seven Oaks, around 11:00AM?  I want to make sure I am there when everyone arrives so you don't have to wait at all.

It looks like there will be good sized caravan especially on Saturday.  Unfortunately I will not be joining the camp/pot luck because I already have plans Saturday night with the wife.  FYI, there is a chance for isolated thunder storms on Saturday according to weather.com, but Sunday will be sunny and clear.  Will the potential t-storms change plans for this run?

This will be our first time up in Big Bear so I am really looking forward to this weekend.  We are planning some hiking/running early Saturday morning and maybe a run on the Northern side of the lake on Sunday.

Bummer! Looks like I'm gonna miss the "meatfest" and Paul's Korean BBQ this time. I have a triathlon this weekend (my first!) and will be swimming the murky waters of the Tijuana River... really looking forward to it!

Paul: Nicely done on the response above. If you could please post pictures of the BBQ and stuff... I appreciate it (torture--my stomach just rumbled!).

Take care, tread lightly and enjoy the grass and trees in Big Bear!

Will hook up the group in Redlands on Saturday.

Brian, I still have those stock rails from the top of my X if you're still interested.

Frank, I can come by and pick up those stickers if no one has done so yet.

My oil pan skid has a nice bend now  ;D   I think I am going to place an order for my sliders on monday or tuesday from AJ's Off Road Armor. I was thinking of getting these (see linky) http://www.ajsoffroadarmor.com/G2_Xterra_SuperRails.html. What do you guys think?? AJ's sliders or Shrock sliders?  Also does anyone know how I can get in contact with Alex the guy with the yellow 4x2? he left his hydration pack in my X.

Side thing: With the SCCX sticker, what material can you use to make it a window magnet? Are they just two thin sheets of magnets?

Office Depot sells flat magnets that can be run though an inkjet printer, probably perfect to make into an SCCX magnet. They're sold in the paper area.

Gold Mountain was a lot of black diamond fun. We did run into a traffic jam with 19 Range Rovers/Land Rovers who were hung up on a nice section of trail. We lost an hour in that SigAlert waiting for them to clear. That trail is always a bunch of fun and it's right up to the limits of what our trucks are designed for. I shot some experimental video that came out pretty good. I need a couple move video cameras or need to work the scene a lot harder to capture the drama.

Camping Saturday night was great. A beautiful unimproved site out in the middle of no where. Lots of food - surprise we brought too much! - and plenty of chatting and star gazing.

Sunday we went up Heartbreak Ridge and made it though the "squeeze" before Brian's truck said it had enough and we had to turn back down. Lots of good tough black diamond action along that trail to be sure.

Just got back home, thanks for a great weekend and for spotting me along the trail.  I'm already looking forward to the next Xcursion.

No problems with the X after Gold Mountain except for some reason my low tire pressure warning light didn't reset until be got back down to almost sea level.  I looked underneath and saw some scrapes on the stock skids and frame, but nothing too bad.  I wish I didn't plow bumper first into that rock though, but it will buff right out :P

I took Melissa up on a bunch of roads off 2N10 today so we could do some hiking and take pictures of the lake and mountains.  Then we drove to the North side of the lake and walked along the paved path.  There were some really nice views and we got some great pictures.  I know she loved it up there because she was already talking about going back for another weekend on the drive home.

Thanks Brian and everybody for a great run.  I'm glad I was able to make it.  The pot luck was AWESOME.  I really enjoyed the huge campfire and especially sleeping in late and doing the full group breakfast buffet.  You missed a good one Mark.  I got home in time to fix the mother in-law's clogged sink.  If you're familiar with the process you'll understand when I say it was quite disgusting.

Frank, I sold all the club stickers so I owe you some money.

Yeah thanks to everyone that participated for the great times  :)

Weather was nice & clear for the most part, trails fun, very interesting quite ghost campsite we found with views & tight creek side trail, fantastic meat cookout, beautiful starlight night that was warmer then predicted, great company & conversations all around ;D

My truck was running great all weekend until the cosmic forces of the heartbreak ridge rock garden squeeze suddenly caused the truck to sound anemic, idle very low (<500rpm) and stall out unless the RPMS where keep up past 1.5k while gassing.   No CEL lights, checked out MAF, all the wiring on the plugs, etc everything looked normal.   More we climbed the less power I had & more I had to gas it to keep from stalling.   After we cleared the hardest rock garden sections near the start of the very steep shale part we headed back down since I had doubt I had the power to climb any higher and stalled about 5x in the rock garden.   Still not sure what the problem was yet, on the way home I has lower on power even on the highway for about 30 minutes or so until about the 5k mark then things improved somewhat and by the time I got home it was almost back to normal. Almost like the computer or one of the sensors was on the fritz?

My Command Master Chief had a similar problem. He ended up taking it to the Dealer where they reset his computer or something to that effect.

sounds like a mass air flow sensor issue it happend to me.  Try swaping one in from another truck before you buy a new one.

Nice pictures Denise

Ah, I should have known. Sorry Denise, I earlier complimented Don on the great photos. In any event, they turned out nice, compliments to you both (or just Denise if Don had no part in it).

Out of 300 or more pictures I might of taken 2, so she deserves the credit. She is really enjoying her camera. Paul and Dan were teaching her how to take pictures of the stars Saturday night.

Hey Jeff, welcome to the club. This outing has passed, but keep an eye on the excursions board for future trips.
