Hey Jayrat - just to confirm, is "Day 1" Saturday, or Friday?

As an option, I reached out to Ocotillo Wells Ranger Station to see how much it would be to reserve/rent the amphitheater/event center on Main St.  This area has tons of picnic tables, a huge community campfire ring, bathrooms, and showers.  It is also located centrally to all of the trails that will be run(I'm assuming).

I know there would be a cost to this, just waiting to hear how much.

That would be a great option, especially for a meet-n-greet or if we want to sponsor potluck style meals each night.  Those that want to camp elsewhere could probably do that, too.

I think Jayrat and I are shying away from the big potluck meals. Some of the reasons are it's a lot of work and with people out running trails time hacks may not get met due to breakdowns etc. People might not get fed which wouldn't be good. I'm not saying we won't do it but with a large group going to the four winds it has a high potential for a mess. Scuba Dale has a good idea depending upon cost and regulations.

Yeah, that actually makes sense.  I never really thought about it from that aspect.

Ouch...

Yeah...not really feasible unless we can get 20 guys to chip in $20 each.  With that said, if we wanted to stay with the OW camping theme, there's a spot not too far away off the road that I like to use a lot that would work great in my opinion.  There are 3 pavilions, 3 fire pits, and plenty of room for a large crowd.  Also, still centrally located, vault toilets super close, showers within a few minutes.  We would definitely have to get there earlier on Friday to lock it in if this was a move we made.

So after discussions , it was decided that the 1st night  Friday of CANVAZ
we should do a Meet and Greet with Potluck
as Joe said we at SCCX have a good group of cooks

Saturday , Sunday are trail days which would make it hard to group cook
so we should stick to Friday for Eat and Greet

Here is the Food thread

Are we at the point we can start cross-posting this on the AZXC and NV pages?

For the runs, put me as tail for the blue run on Saturday and the green run on Sunday, if you don't mind me being tail.  I'm trying to get the family to come and I think the green run on Sunday will be perfect for the girls.

edit:  I'm going to share the FB event to the AZXC and NV pages.

Anza Borrego is a favorite place for my wife and I to visit anyways, and we just bought a 2005 Off Road X.  That's our first 4WD/Off Road vehicle and we have no experience; hopefully there's at least something that's easy enough for us to handle?

I can tell you with 100% assuredness there will be plenty of trails to accommodate you. You will also be able to gain lots of knowledge about wheeling if you want on those trails and build lots of confidence.

Have a licensed off road capable vehicle. 4WD is good but not a pre-requisite. Have camping gear and be able to bring your food and water along with some firewood. The rest is up to you as were planning to run several different types of trails. This is planned to be a family/dog friendly event. If you want to sharpen off road skills this is a good event as there should be lots of knowledge there.

Awesome! Thanks for the information. I wouldn’t want to hold anyone up from having a good time, but as for just getting my feet wet off roading, I WOULD feel more comfortable with some seasoned people there.

Adam12SD - this would be a great first run with the group. Just bring a great attitude and your sense of adventure, along with enough gear and supplies to be self sufficient. Just the basics would get you by:

*Some shelter for camping (a tent, or some people just sleep in their rig, plus a sleeping bag, etc)
*Food for yourself and anyone in your group, both on the trail and back at camp. Days on the trail usually result in lunch on the trail, so plan accordingly. Having some extra food is also a good idea, in the event of an emergency.
*Water. Again, have enough for an emergency. The absolute least you should have in the desert is 1 gallon per day per person in your group. More is always good.
*Fuel for your rig. Most folks show up with as full of a tank as possible (aka - filling up at the closest gas station), and bring at least a few extra gallons.
*Firewood for the group fire. Specific amount will be defined as we get closer to the event, but usually one or two bundles per attending rig ends up giving us plenty for a few good nights' fires.
*Anything else that is an "essential" for you or anyone in your group. Think: heaters, portable bathrooms (and toilet paper), air mattress, etc. For example, we will likely be staying where there is no bathrooms. Some people don't mind hiking a distance from camp with a shovel and squatting over a hole. Others prefer to "go" in a more comfortable setting, especially if you have family members in your group. If you know that certain amenities are important to you or anyone in your group, plan accordingly to have them with you. Remember, we'll be in the open desert with pretty much nothing around but ourselves and whatever we bring.

If you don't have a lot of experience dry camping, you'll learn a lot from this group quickly in just a single outing. The key is to not be a burden on the group while you're learning, and that's easily accomplished by bringing the few things I listed above. It's one thing to forget ketchup and ask if anyone in the group has some for your hot dog, but it's another thing to run out of gas on the trail because you were the only one who didn't bring extra fuel. Feel free to ask tons of questions, as everyone here has their own style and their own essentials for trips like this. For example, I prefer to bring a big kitchen setup and cook great food for myself and my family. Celt usually likes to throw some scraps into a piece of foil and set it in the campfire for a few minutes and call it dinner lol (or he's been known to pull an MRE out from under his seat during the middle of a day on the trail).

As far as the actual trails and offroading, don't worry, we won't get you into any situations you aren't comfortable with. If you're still learning the capabilities of your rig and yourself, you can stick with the group on the green trails, which are basically dirt fire roads. The last thing you should consider is some kind of communications capability. Most of our group runs Ham radios, but it requires a license before you can operate on one. Getting the license isn't difficult, there are free or cheap study guides that will help you pass the test for the most basic license, but it does take a little bit of a time investment to study and be ready (some people just buckle down and get it done in a day or two, others will study for a few minutes a day for a few weeks before they're ready). There are very inexpensive handheld Ham radio options from China (see: Baofeng). Even if you don't obtain a license before this trip, you can purchase one of the radios for $30 or less and be able to at least monitor the communications taking place within the group you're in. CB is a secondary option, but less and less folks in our group are running CBs these days, so you're far better off with the HAM if you can swing it.

Look forward to seeing you out there!

Can someone point me to more info regarding what the expectations are of green, blue and black trails?

It's basically a guideline. This year for CANVAZ we are going to have several different runs depending upon interest. As a general guide, a Green trail is anything stock and no real off road experience necessary. A Blue trail will have some obstacles that a driver will have to negotiate and it may be best to have some form of tire other than street and maybe some other minor modifications like skid plates or some rock sliders. Off roading experience is more helpful. A Black trail is for the modified crowd with off road tires, armor and generally a rear locker with good to very good off roading and recovery skills. Blue and Green trails generally involve little risk of damage to a vehicle. A Black trail has a good possibility of damage or breakage.

Jayrat and I have not yet compiled a list of trails and types yet but it's in the works. With each trail the expectations will be clearly set out with what to expect. The trail guides and cat herders will be experienced and will have vehicles that are probably a little more capable than the trail requirements as a whole. As the lists come out of the trails each leader will set their idea of what to expect but it is up to you to be prepared and bring extras such as plenty of water, some food and warm clothes and/or a blanket in case of a nasty break. Nobody will be left behind but you surely don't want to be that guy that shows up without water and the like thinking the trail leader is going to supply everything. There is nothing wrong with attempting a higher class of trail to polish up your skills. When the runs get posted then would be the time to ask the trail leader any questions you may have if you are thinking about it.

This is shaping up to be a really good event this year with lots of participation. You will find a good attitude and a willingness to help out with tasks go a long way. The trail leaders/cat herders put a lot of time and energy into making it a great time for everyone on the run and they get a lot of satisfaction when they see people smiling or talking about how much fun they had. Hope this helped to clear any questions up about the general rating scheme.

  It's basically a guideline.

I'm not new to offroading. Just new to Xterras. Thanks for the explanation! After a lifetime of large, lifted full size 4x4's I've "downsized" to the Xterra. Just gonna have to make myself be happy with 3" of lift and little BFG 33" AT's (First non mudders I've ever owned)

The way you are set up you would be fine on Pinyon Mtn with me, just sayin...
Hmm, I'll have to think about that. I'm more concerned about the passengers I might have with me for this trip. I'm not sure how they'd handle anything over a blue.

The sandstone canyon run is perfect for you, and has the best scenery in my opinion.

Saturday, Oct 6th

  Pinyon Mtn (Difficult/Black-ish).

Requirements: 4WD with capabilities for 4L.
Good recovery points front and rear.
Off road tires (AT/MT etc.) no street cross over types.

Comms: 2m 146.535

Info: This trail has a high probability of some trail damage mostly rock rash from the squeeze depending on the line you choose or lack of doing what the spotter is suggesting you do. Heart Attack hill is not for everyone. It's steep and long, you will experience a fair amount of sliding and three wheeled stands due to the IFS. You need to have good driving skills but it's a whole lot of fun. There are a few more obstacles along the trail that are fun but not terrible. I will do everything possible to get everyone through it as safely and damage free as possible. This is hands down my favorite trail in our desert!

Route: Begin at Pinyon Mtn Rd. off of S2 right outside of Shelter Valley AKA Earthquake Valley: (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pinyon+Mountains/@33.0532267,-116.3729314,7592m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x80da2beec01d028b:0xe2ac6d2dc9614163!8m2!3d33.056157!4d-116.3411238 ) We'll continue East along Pinyon Mtn and exit Fish Creek Wash and continue on to Split Mtn Rd. Take that North and hit Hwy 78 West until we get by the ranger station off of Quarry Rd. Shortly after that I plan to head out onto the Goat Trail which has some fun ridgeline travel another fun drop and a few minor off camber obstacles through a wash. We will come out into the San Felipe Wash and head back West and get to play around in some good sized sand dunes and come out in Borrego Springs for a re-fuel. There are no other fuel points along this trail and it wouldn't make sense to go into Salton City for fuel as it's too far out of the way for this planned route. We will head back to camp from Borrego Springs as a group when everyone is ready unless you/we want to stay in town for food or whatever.

This will be a long day and a re-fuel will most likely be necessary if you are operating one of the gas guzzlers out there. Bring what you want to eat and a little extra in case somebody breaks. Bring lots of water and at least a warm jacket and blanket for everyone in your vehicle. I don't plan to have any comms mandatory but if you have a 2M bring it. I don't plan on stopping very much and smelling the desert petunias (See 1st sentence in this paragraph) but I do plan to stop and have lunch somewhere probably in the shade of Fish Creek. This trail is a whole lot of fun and not The Spectre of Death many make it out to be. Yes you can get into trouble on it quickly but that's exactly why there will be spotters (Probably me) on the difficult parts to mitigate issues. I'm thinking 5 vehicles total but I will stretch those numbers if the extras are self contained. If you have questions ask them or PM me and I really look forward to seeing you guys out for this years CANVAZ!

We are not 100% sure yet but have thought about just outside of Butterfield or out near Fish Creek Wash.

Is it typically still hot AF at the beginning of October out there?

It can be hot/warm by day but the nights should be cool enough. I'm sure there will be plenty of easy ups and tarps set up anyway.

My Dad said he's glad to lead a couple of runs. What he talked about is also leading Jayrats run (Canyon sin nombre and diablo drop off). We talked about doing that on a separate day for the guys who may miss out due to going on something like mine or another. It's probably the most popular so it might make sense to do it twice. If any of you have some ideas please give your input and I'll pass it along to him.

Trail run: Calcite Mine. Sunday, Oct 7th.

Vehicle limit: None.

Vehicle requirements: Highly suggested off road AT or MT tires. Recovery points front and rear suggested.

Comms: 2m desired but none required 146.535.

Suggestions: Bring food for lunch at Calcite Mine, extra in case of breakdown. Bring jackets, blankets and plenty of water for everyone in your vehicle i.e. 1 gallon per person per day. Temps in this area can vary widely from really cold and windy to hot by day to cold at night.

Trail description: This is a classic trip up to a mine where Calcite was mined during WWII which provided what was needed for the Norton bomb sight in the B-25's B-17's over Europe and the Pacific Theaters of war so it's a pretty historic place all things concerning. Getting up there is a steep run with loose rock and dirt. Conditions are constantly changing. Some off camber spots. If you are not comfortable with a steep dropoff to one side and steep hillside to another this might be a point to consider. It's certainly not a black run but moreso light gray-ish. There are no bypasses and it has a couple obstacles that are pretty easily passable. Up on the top there is some amazing views of the Salton Sea, Borrego and Ocotillo Wells. It's a relatively short trip but what I plan to do is get there via the Military Wash and stop at some of Patton's bombing and strafing ranges where the area is still littered with projectiles and a few targets of opportunity. On the way back we will hit the Tectonic Wash which gives a fun trip back towards Borrego Springs where if time allows we will stop at Font's Point. For anyone who has not seen this place it's not something to be missed. After that we can head into Borrego Springs and re-fuel and head back to camp.

Eric,

I think Military Wash has been cleaned up a lot since I first went out there in early 2009.  On that trip the ground was covered with brass cartridge casings and spent projectiles, but on the more recent trips it looked a lot cleaner.  Still worth going to and looking around.  There are still some target frames, rails, and some reinforced concrete stuff, and you could probably still find some spent projectiles.

Here is a link to an old gallery of mine that has some pictures from Military Wash and close by areas, from a trip we did in February of 2009.

I don't have a picture, but we actually found a live .50 cal round.  Fully intact.

I can show you on a map some time where some good places to look for things are.

Thanks for the write up Frank. Over the years it's always been fun to stop there and let the kids jump out and explore the area to see what they find then talk about what they found. The historical significance of that entire area just amazes me. That whole area was a couple of different seas over time, some freshwater some saltwater. Who knows what type of dinosaur roamed those lands and how many generations of native peoples inhabited it. In much more recent history all of the training that went on down there to prepare our troops for N. Africa during WWII should give even the most causal visitor time to pause in reflection at we have at our doorstep. I would be interested to see what you have on your map and compare it with what I know of the area.

It's a three day event where we will be dry camping. No water is available on site so you may want to follow the 1 gallon per person per day rule of thumb and adjust accordingly to your needs. The closest fuel is about 30 miles away in Borrego Springs and Salton City which would be a longer distance if you stay off the roads and go through the desert. I would suggest having at least 5 gallons extra in your vehicle or at your camp. I'll probably bring more but my vehicles aren't exactly the fuel-efficient types. Most of the runs should probably incorporate a fuel stop at the end or you can simply get into Borrego Springs after peeling off from the group. Showers and the like are available at the Ocotillo Wells Ranger Station (What they cost I don't know). You can re-stock food/beer/ice and the like in Borrego. They have a small general store and several restaurants. Fuel prices vary greatly there but can sometimes be less that what we pay around here in the cities. Prepare for warm to near hot by day and cold at night. An awning or easy up isn't a bad idea. We will have a general dispersed camping area but plan to always have someone hanging back to watch over things during the day while everyone is out on trails. One of the locations we are thinking about has a composting toilet but the other does not. Some of the guys bring crap castles others just go out into the desert with a shovel. The local Laguna repeater Rx 147.1500 Tx 147.7500 + tone 107.2 covers the entire area very well so comms are really good. Each run will most likely have their own simplex channel set by the trail leader. I can't speak for CB as many aren't using them anymore. If you have more questions ask as Jayrat and I really want everyone to enjoy themselves and feel comfortable wheeling with this group, no strangers just new friends.

After talking with Jayrat my dad is going to lead a second Canyon Sin Nombre run on an opposite day as that seems to be very popular so guys can do it twice or not miss out due to another run. I'm not sure of the second run he's planning but I will try and get those up by the weekend from him for folks to sign up.

Just watch out for the no driving in reverse signs and I would imagine you could do whatever you want....  :)   Buuuutttt, in all seriousness if you are planning on getting and using a HAM license I would shy away from the Baofengs. Some folks use them and like them but in my opinion they are not great quality and can be questionable. If you have the coin and plan on using them buy the best one you can afford as it will pay off in the long run.

I disagree with celt on this one.
Definitely start with a Boafeng.
Great little radio.
Especially if you just plan to listen. I have an external magnet mount antenna you can use which really isn't necessary for trail runs.

When you get your ham license, buy a good dual band radio.

If it's just for trail runs and you don't want to do it as a hobby, no need to go full send and spend a bunch of money.

Any of the UV5r stuff is fine.

These little radio are also fantastic for spotting drivers through sections.

I hope to be able to be out there for at least part of it, but that weekend is still uncertain right now.

Calcite Mine is a classic Anza Borrego run with a lot of history and amazing views. It's not very difficult all in all and we are going through other washes getting there and out through Font's Point which is something not to be missed out there. It's your choice but I personally think you may be missing out on a really great run.

I have a stock 2005 O/R but almost no experience.  Only trails I've done so far are Santiago Peak (did the whole thing at like 5 mph because I didn't deflate my tires first so it was bumpy as hell...), and some rutted gravelly mess in the Mojave that my GPS thought was a road.  If you think that's enough, I might be willing to give it a try.

On that note, guess who gets to fix their axle/pinion seals before the trip :(

CMT (Calcite Mine Trail) has a couple of sections that require careful spotting and use of your factory locker.

If you choose this run, place yourself back in the queue so you can watch how others take successful lines up the first obstacle.  It is a seriously rutted section of off camber bumps, that usually puts a stock Xterras sway bars and suspension to the test.  Bring a camera/charged smartphone, as the likely-hood of some "three-wheel" photos is high here.

You won't have issues following your trail leaders guidance, airing down to at least 18lbs. PSI, and following through the fun obstacles this run has to offer.

Spotting tip:  folks should be guiding you with "driver/passenger" as opposed to "left/right."  Also, a quality spotter never uses the command "straighten it out..." as you can't see your wheels orientation from the driver's seat.  Spotters should always be guiding with either the "passenger" or "driver" command to get your wheels straight and back on track.  Spotter/driver communications should calmly build a sense of confidence and trust that often results in friendships that last a lifetime...

Have fun, and Celt is correct...the history of this trail, combined with the views from the top overlooking the Truckhaven Hills and Anza Borrego Badlands shouldn't be missed.

Didn't mean to scare you off this run...I think you'll be fine.

But, we haven't personally met, this IS the internet, so caveat emptor!

CMT isn't a casual drive across a parking lot for sure...but that's where the adventure begins!

Just to make this clear since im not the only with this concern now. As many know now that I got a new truck 4wd. I do intent to attempt some trails but with my concerned wife and new truck on hand,Can I stick to just the camping part? Not really considering trails to prevent any argument with the wife n such. If this is the case, then Im still in, if not then I will have to pass til I get a capable rig where I might just run solo.

Sit there, go on trail runs, make a cheesecake in the dutch oven, go over where DRV is and shoot at targets or rocks. - it doesn't matter.

If you decide to just camp that's fine you can do whatever you want to do there is no pressure otherwise. The way these trails are being planned is they will range from difficult to very easy. We do this to allow for experienced drivers in built up vehicles can have some challenges. The easier trails are designed and get people out there on other trails to have fun learning about off roading and the area when they go back.

Looking forward to some campfire/trail time with you all!

The black trail is Pinyon Mountain. We have not nailed down exact camp coordinates yet mainly just because its been too darn hot to get down there. We will have that info soon and I'll make sure Jayrat and I touvh base with any of the Nevada crew that attends the American Adventurist Mtn rendezvous this weekend to pass along important info.

I don't know yet if I'll be able to attend . . . but that won't stop me from commenting.

Blair Valley might just be a really good choice, given that it will be noticeably cooler there compared to down in the lower elevations (for example, around the end of Split Mountain Road).  There should be some spots where you can get a lot of vehicles, but you also might want to send someone in advance.

Another nice thing about Blair Valley is that if someone wants to get out and walk, there are some great hiking trails there.

One thing to consider though is that Blair Valley is inside the boundary of Anza Borrego Desert State Park, and thus has all of the usual State Park restrictions.

Not to my knowledge.  Im not sure what "state park restrictions" he considers to be a problem.

Most of the additional regulations are aimed at backcountry camping outside of the developed campsites, but here are a few of the published ones. Some of these are common sense (such as picking up your trash), and others are pretty specific to the park and don't apply elsewhere (such as requiring a metal container for fires, or prohibiting firearms).

-The California Vehicle Code applies to all roads in the park - dirt, sandy wash or paved. All vehicles must be highway legal and remain on established roads.

-Vehicles must be parked no more than 1 vehicle length off the road. Do not trample vegetation or drive over geological features.

-Pets must not be left unattended. Dogs and cats must be on the 6 foot leash and under the immediate control of a person during the day and in a tent or vehicle during nighttime hours. They are only allowed on parked roads and within your campsite. Pets are NOT allowed on trails or in wilderness areas. Your pet can only go where vehicles can go.

-Camp at least 100 feet away from all water sources (springs, creeks, streams).

-Ground fires are not permitted. A container with metal sides and bottom must be used for all campfires.

-Bring your own fire wood. Gathering or taking from any live, dead or downed vegetation is prohibited.

-Firearms and fireworks are not permitted anywhere in the park.

-There is no garbage collection in the backcountry so you are responsible for packing out all of your garbage, including toilet paper and human waste. Practice "Leave No Trace."

-All natural and cultural features are protected. Nothing may be removed or disturbed.

-Camping in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is limited to maximum of 30 days in any calendar year.

Personally, I don't consider it to be a problem.  I really like ABDSP, and spend a lot of time there, especially Blair Valley.  That said, there are a few people in SCCX who do not seem to like things like the pet (on hiking trail) restrictions and the firearm restrictions, to name a couple of things.  It has come up in the past when I've set up an Xcursion to Blair Valley.  I will not specifically point out who doesn't like what in this open forum; and it may not matter depending on who is and is not attending.  I just wanted to point out a reminder, since State Park land is quite different from BLM land.

All that said, Blair Valley could be a good choice.  It's close to the start of the Pinyon Mountain trail, and also the Arroyo Seco del Diablo trail (and the Diablo Drop-Off).  It is, however, a relatively long way on pavement over to say Ocotillo Wells or Calcite Mine.

Sage Bromax and my dad will lead a trail on Saturday if need be and he's also leading Canyon Sin Nombre on Sunday for folks that might miss out on it Saturday. The trip ends Sunday unless you want to stay an extra day although I don't know who is doing that as I can't. All of the runs have plenty of room so you just have to pick your poison. If you have other questions post away or call/PM/smoke signal/telegram them to me.

Put me down for the Blue Trail Saturday with Jay and the Green trail on Sunday with Celt. Is there a meetup time for camping Friday - looks like that area is pretty dispersed ??

No formal meet up time, I know there is a potluck Friday for anyone who wishes to participate. I would venture to say if you are there by 1600 you should be fine. The camp area is dispersed but I think as soon as folks start showing up we should all be able to congregate together unless you want a spot away from the group. It's a nice campground with lots of level spots for the RTT guys.

That would be super helpful in case we have to adjust around a little. Hopefully everyone brings a few bundles of wood each to fill it!

After closely watching the weather, it looks like we are going to have temperatures in the mid going to low 80's maybe even high 70's the last day. Nice and cool by night around mid 60's range. Given our location it will hopefully be a little cooler as those temps are for Borrego proper. At least the mountain will block that sun in the evenings a lot quicker. Looks like we are going to do well this early for a desert trip.

Syberia,
Couple of questions -

1.  For those who have never been to this campsite, is it pretty obvious to find from the pavement?
2.  I REALLY hate to be this guy, but is there cell service out there?  I know I know, we're suppose to be relaxing, but work always feels better about me taking time off when they know they can get a hold of me, lol.

ETA, I actually looked at a map.  I'll answer my own question - YES it's easy to find off the pavement. lol
ETA 2,  See, they even have a sign.

Make it easy on yourself, get into the desert and shut everything off. It won't take long for decompression to begin its magical effects counteracting the electronic stress machines. Besides there is a no electronics at the campfire at CANVAZ rule. We want to see the glow of the fire not cell phones.
