Title: New trailer Updated
Post by: Sage Bromax on January 14, 2020, 06:10:24 PM
As many of you may recall, Clan Bromax bought a new trailer last year:

Although it was called a No boundaries, we found the boundaries on our fifth trip on a forest service road east of Flagstaff.  The trailer was a total loss, but the insurance company agreed that I was on an official road, so they paid it off, mostly.  Since then I have been doing a lot of research, and tomorrow (barring a cataclysmic event) I will be picking up one of these, just in time to take it on the Mojave Road:

We will see if this one will survive!

Mine has an open rack and a rock deflector, no tongue box.  Stock configuration is for two jerry cans and two propane tanks.  That will balance nicely with the 35 gallons of water in the stainless steel tank at the rear.

It looks like you are going to haul about 320 lbs between the water, gas and propane. Distributed fore and aft it doesn't seem too bad.

The rack on top is rated at 300 pounds.  Plenty of room for firewood!

The trailer handled great.  With the suspension and hitch that are on it, the trailer can articulate separately from the Xterra.
Now that we have used it several times, setting up camp is getting fairly simple. Once parked and level, we can set up the basic camp in about twenty minutes.  If we want to put up the fully enclosed annex with the floor and en suite bathroom, that is another half an hour.

So, after the Coyote Flats trip it was time to upgrade the tires:

At first I was going to try using adapters and Xterra rims, but it would have moved the tire too far out into the wheel well, where the tire would be likely to hit.  So I used the factory Black Series rims and upgraded to BFG KO2s, 285/75-R16.  It is the same tire that's on the Xterra now, just not the right bolt pattern.  These tires look much better than the stock ones.
Here is what the stock one looked like:

I only changed out the two that popped for now.  I will wait a few months to change out the spares.  The X needs new shoes first.

Looks like those tires are Chewbacca approved.
