I know this is early, but I am jonesing for a trip! Here is what is posted on their site:
"RSVP list for Mountain Rendezvous will go live sometime around 5 July 2016 - due to the heinous amounts of last minute flake outs on RSVP's for previous events (6 years worth!) there will now be, starting with MRV, a non-refundable $20 registration fee for all RSVP's."
Set this as a reminder on your calendars!
-
Here is a link to the sign-up page, which goes live sometime TOMORROW:
http://americanadventurist.com/forum/threads/2016-socal-mountain-rendezvous-official-thread.3972/
After you sign up on their site, post here so we know who is coming.
-
From what I've read the total will be $60 for this event
-
Apparently they had a bunch of no-shows last year so they want money up front this time, just to ensure you are serious about going. lol
-
I may be in for this trip. I just joined the site. I going to check with the family to see if anybody else is interested.
-
Thanks Tony, I met these guys at their desert rendevous, nice bunch.

They run a really cool site...like their trip reports and trip planning especially. :)

Reg is open
-
I just signed up and there's already 61 attendees sign up quick.
-
That list includes guests so it be more than the 120 vehicle limit

I've seen this advertised and read a little about them but can someone who has attended and can chime in about what goes on? I'm considering going just to get away but would be curious for a little more info.

I'm with him on this!!

The itinerary for the event is posted in the thread on American adventurist. If you don't like what they are doing, you can do your own thing.
It's a big event with all kinds of rigs and everyone hangs out. Very fun to wander around the different groups and meet others and see other setups.

I see a bunch of trail running, hiking etc but it doesn't specify. Does that mean guys just get together and come up with a run to go on?
-
Yea its pretty informal, all the more reason to mingle and find new friends or just hang with the people you know.
So far looks like the duff man, Tony, Steve C, richard310 and myself are reserved. Already up to 70 RSVP'd.

Yes. The campground is set. Anything else is up to you and whoever you meet there. Most of the guys just love to camp and hang out, but there will be runs going on. There is a central spot where the guys organize stuff. You'll find it.
I just signed up Nilda and I.
-
I'm in. RSVP'd and paid. OH BOY! :D
-
Some heavy hitters from the SCCX crowd are going to be there!
SWEET!
-
RSVP & PAID >:D
-
It's real casual schedule-wise. You can do runs, or just sit around camp. There is a Dutch Oven cooking contest, excessive amounts of food, lots of different rigs to look at and get ideas from, and they raffle off some great prizes (ask Steve C about his winnings last year). Plus the money goes to support the Boy Scouts camp that we stay at.
-
You can be everything from Social to Anti-Social
-
6 hrs since signups went live and already 80 spots out of 120 taken.
-
Did they do something to the link to pay the fee as I can't seem to find it this morning?
-
There is a PayPal link at the very bottom of the page. That is what I used.

The Dutch oven competition is something I really want to check out...and might just prepare something for. 8)
Swap meet is cool too, but selfishly I want to see some of the off road trailers in use and on display.

You'll be in luck, John.
Everyone I've ever come across at one of these is eager to tell you about all of the nuanced particulars of their off roading/camping set up.

I'm in a holding pattern. :-\ I RSVP'd and paid on Wednesday but was never added tot he list. I saw they lock the post, I guess they over sold and are trying to figure it out.

They locked to ensure they didn't oversell. They are trying to match up PayPal names to screen names. Drop them a line and give them your info.

Glad to see you guys making your way over to AAV for MRV. Definitely take part in the Dutch Oven contest and/or potluck. It's a great family friendly event with a bunch of like-minded enthusiasts just hanging out and kicking back in the mountains. Feel free to walk about and meander around the grounds to check out other rigs and setups. There are scheduled events that take place during the entirety of the event, but between those times, feel free to do whatever you like, whether it be trail runs, MTB, hiking, or just plain chill at the site. Please be aware of the fire restrictions during the event and that applies to the Dutch Oven contest as well. Also, yes you can setup your own "compound" but please be mindful of the limited space down in the main camp.
We're trying to get the RSVP and names matched up in the meantime, so please be patient. Any questions or concerns, please pm me, Dave or any of the other mods on AAV. The list is back open so if you don't see your name up on the master list, please post up with your username, name actual, and PayPal email address.
We're looking forward to seeing you guys there!

Hey guys.
I volunteered "my normal camping buddies" to buy the Boy Scouts at Camp Tahquitz one of those camp fires in a can.
(Thread (http://americanadventurist.com/forum/threads/fire-pits-for-camp-tahquitz.3987/) on AAV)
I figured if anyone wanted to contribute, that would be awesome.
I know I've spoke with a few guys about it already, but I just wanted to throw it out there to the planning thread.
If we're real nice to JTIII, maybe he'll give us a sticker to put on there :D
-
I can kick in some coin.
-
What a great idea Steve, and I love the AAV guys for thinking this up to thank the Boy Scouts for use of the camp :)
What is the total price of one of these units? Quick google search shows prices all over the board betwen $110 and $175 (maybe there's different sizes?). Either way... put me down for $20. And oh yeah, you should post your paypal address so we can send you the snaps. 8)
-
Not sure you saw my reply on The other site, but put me down to help.
-
I shall contribute >:D
-
We are hardly normal.
Steve...thanks for taking point on this.
I'll personally donate a propane tank (already responded over on AAV) and kick you an Andy Jackson for the apparatus of non restricted forestry service flame.

So does that make 10 peeps @ $110 = $11 each? Is that all?!?
Or are you getting more than one.... >:D >:D
-
Maybe we could help JTIII cover the cost of a 20lb propane tank, too?
How much are those?
-
Dude! You left my name off the list...better fix that soon :P
-
Looking at the Home Despot, propane with no exchange is $50, so $160 total between 12 ppl(JT is not on steve's list) is around $14 per person.
If JT is planning on just donating a tank and exchanges it for a full one or fills it, cost is around $20. $140 total, which is $12 a person.

Is everyone still in?
$119.6711 / participants = $10.88(ish)
If everyone want's to chip in $11 that'd be awesome!
If we want to cover the $50 propane tank JTIII is donating;
$119.67 + $50 / 11 participants = $15.42
Upon further thought, let's just do the campfire in a can + the propane tank option.
(I will collect the money via my PayPal and then send money to JTIII)
Please PayPal me $16!

Maybe I shouldn't let any secrets out, but cooking with a Dutch Oven is from the top down much like the typical oven of today. Regulating the heat on the lid and rotating it to keep it an even temperature is key with finicky recipes. Things like stew or quiches are a little more forgiving. The temps under the oven need to be maintained, but they can and should for the most part be low. Maintaining a well seasoned oven is key. Much of this isn't an exact science, I generally cook my meals in them and determine when they are ready by the smell emitting from the lid. There is a whole following about putting this and that charcoal briquette over the lid and in what pattern. My thinking is using coals from wood gathered from a fire separates the men from the boys using a Dutch oven. Where those ovens came into their own is pioneers moving across this nation often times using buffalo dung as a fuel source much like they do today in places like Afghanistan. Now before anyone starts scoffing.. it's a decent fuel source and keeps a fairly constant heat source. Using collected wood campfire charcoal in my opinion is a much better fuel source and is fortunately available where we live everywhere. The temps will vary depending upon the type of wood and it's curing. Point being, you need to pay a lot of attention with your Dutch Oven because you can produce a really great meal easily or a fantastic meal with a lot of finesse' should you really get into it. I prefer to gather whatever woods are available and do the guestimate method to prepare a meal. I'm of the opinion that simple sometimes wins the day.
The stew SageBromax made in his oven looks pretty darn tasty to me and I would not hesitate to show up with a plate and spoon to his campsite for such a meal. I love these posts and am happy to share any ideas I might have and learn from others as to what works for them. I most always bring a Dutch oven along with me on our runs to cook for family and friends with.
-
The problem this year (and last) is that wood/charcoal fires are not permitted at the Rendezvous - USFS restrictions. So everything has to be done with propane. The Volcano Grill setup I have also has a fireproof fabric cover that goes over it, to trap the heat around the Dutch oven and hopefully make up for not being able to put coals on top. Oh, and the stew was tasty tonight!

I'm still having a heck of a time getting back onto that American Adventurist site so I don't know what's planned. Anyway, looks like I will most likely be headed up Friday night getting into camp late. I was thinking about running Gold Mountain Saturday morning if anyone is interested? It's listed as a black trail but in my opinion it's more grayish to maybe OD green. I just ran that and the John Bull a few weeks ago and had a really good time but Mrs. Celt has not been on it yet. Gold Mtn trail only takes about 2 hours at most as long as there isn't the obligatory conga line on it at the two obstacles. Anyone want to come along?

Woody, I was talking with the Duffman today and he brought up a good point. The Boy Scout camp isn't in Big Bear. I thought is was the one over at Holcomb Valley and not far from all the trails up there. This would be a longer drive to it and then again back to camp especially with summer traffic. Since were getting in probably very late Friday night I might need put a hold on this trail ride to be sure I can get back in time to prepare everything for my Dutch Oven meal that night and check things out a bit.
-
I've been to this camp, It's about 20-30 minutes from the trail head. If that's too far maybe we could hit Pontiac Sluice or something around there. The trail the others are taking is pretty but really easy, 4wd isn't even necessary. I'd like to get some challenging trail in that weekend.

So there isn't an official "waitlist" this year. If you aren't on the list, please chime in on the thread and post up that you are willing to still hop on board, as people are beginning to see life happen. A few folks have already dropped off. Post up ASAP!
Sorry PainRoller. I tried :/

We got word today that we will be able to have a fire at the main fire ring next to the stage. This is the only spot there will be a wood fire, propane is still good to go at individual camp sites.
If anyone would like to bring a bit of wood to contribute to the fire it would be greatly appreciated.
Couple of things.
1. Now you can use coals if you want to with your dutch oven at the main pit area.
2. Bring some wood to contribute

This is where I'll be camping this year! It's a great spot, central to the action, but far enough away to have quiet. (not that it gets rowdy at all at these events)
You are more than welcome and encouraged to camp with me! My Rendezvous buddies, the guys I only see at these events have a bitchin' Tactical Tropical Anti Radar Defense Tarp (TTARDT) for some shade.
You can get a little further away, skirting the edges of the camp, but these events are made to be social
The camp spot is located just after the main fire pit and check in area on the left.

From the main fire pit, the camp is up in the left hand corner.

I'm taking Friday off and planned on leaving Orange around noon. Since it's on the back side of Big Bear I should be there close to 2:00.
Woody, camp is located here:
N34 09.913' W116 53.697'
Put that into the googles and you'll be set. Should take you 1.5 hours.
On getting there, there is a Camp entrance off the 38, but the one we want is off Jenk's Lake Rd.
-
I've been there before with my kids when they were in Indian Guides. I just remember they drive on the the 38 being a nightmare with all of the signals and residential traffic. If you've got a work around, I'm all ears.
-
Yes, last year my GPS told me to drive right through Redlands and the University campus. Pain in the butt. This year I am staying on the 10 to Yucaipa. Take off at Oak Glen Road and go left (northeast) all the way to Bryant Street. Then hang a left and go until it T's into Hwy 38. Then hang a right. You can also get off the 10 one exit earlier at Yucaipa Blvd and take it east until you hit Oak Glen Road, then turn left onto Oak Glen. Looks to be about the same time regardless of which of these two you take, according to Google Maps.

So Steve...by my fuzzy math I have 9 rigs from SCCX attending...plus your AAV buddies...is there enough room for potentially 15 trucks and camp space there?
If so...excellent! If not, what is your suggested plan B for those of us arriving in the afternoon?
Thanks for the very informative posts BTW.

I think it should work out nicely.
Tony can chime in - he was there last year, too.
There's actually a bit more space towards the bottom of the picture.
I will be there early to "claim" the area.
I think there will only be 2 AAV buddies this time. Two I know had to bow out.
Anyways, I don't want anyone to feel pressured to camp where I camp just because I've been there before. Camp where ever you please, it's not that big of a place and walking to hang out with your buds is no big deal!
-
I'm really feeling the pressure...

That statement obviously did and does not apply to you.
You do not have a choice.
-
I'm really feeling the pressure...
Right?
I wrote a really smartass post...but retracted it because I'm trying to be better...nicer. :)
So...we will camp near the spot you recommended, if there is space. If not, we will meet some new people, camp, cook, and have a wonderful time!

I think , it was directed at me,
Steve C has made it clear, he doesn't like Canadians :o

There is plenty of room. I was going to add photos from last year, but Photobucket's autoloading ads are killing me! :o

Thank you Tony...much appreciated. Looking forward to returning your "DV switch" from last year. ;)

OK, so it's not just me. Jordan, do something about this ???

Jordan can't fix PhotoBucket's site - unless he has more Mojo than any of us knew! O0

You can attach images to your post on this forum, they should be resized automagicially. no reason to use photobucket.
Heck, we even have a gallery at the top you can use to link to external websites.

Bummer, I'm out >:(
If anyone wants to take my spot let me know. Reservation deposit is paid, so whoever want to go will have to pay the campground fee and fill out the indemnity form.
Let me know, if no takers from here by Wednesday night I'll post on the main AA thread

I was only kidding. Son of a gun, you came up with a solution :-*
Jordan is worth every dime that we're not paying him ;)

Since this is my first trip with AA. Can anybody fill me in on the etiquette for the Saturday Dutch oven competition? If we aren't competing do we bring something to share? Are we on our own for a meal? What to do???? ???

Tony/Jordan/Steve can comment here...but from what I've read Tim, everyone is encouraged (but not required, although shined favorably upon if you do...) to contribute to the Saturday potluck...Dutch oven or otherwise.
Similar to a TMR potluck...bring it, and it will be eaten. :)
EDIT: If you are bringing a dish/sidedish/dessert, don't forget to pack serving utensils...large spoons, ladles, slotted spoons, x-wide spatulas and the sort.
-
You're free to participate, be a taste tester, or just enjoy the show! From my experience, there's enough food for a meal, but always pack one in your rig just in case. If you do enter, be sure there's enough for people to sample it.
Come hungry!

Truck is all packed. I will be rolling from Kearny Mesa as soon as I can ditch work tomorrow. >:D

I'm leaving................................... Wait it's not 2100 yet. Nope, still stuck here till then. I'll get into camp just in time to hear all the snoring going on and the one or two late goers who will tell me, "Man you should have been here three hours ago" stories.
-
You won't be the only one. I'll be rolling in around 2100 (hopefully) as well.

Got home and recovered the vehicle and gear, what a great time! Was fun as always to see old friends and make some new ones. This was my first event with American Adventurist, my experiences with them was first rate. Super nice and friendly people who for the most part all seem to be on the same page. Sage Bromax sure cleaned up at the raffle but I'll let him tell that story. Fortunately our resident Canadian narrowly escaped being mauled from a fleeing bear when CaWoody interrupted Yogi's snakcing on his pic-a-nic basket.. Boo Boo was nowhere to be seen. I can't wait for the desert rendezvous... The trip home went super smooth, especially for a Sunday afternoon with one exception that I seemed to have some additional weight on the spare tire....Ahem "J.T."..........

Made it home a little after 2 p.m. Still recovering from my self-induced liver-function test. I'm told I actually did drink some of that moonshine, I just don't remember it that way. :o
The event was well run and everyone seemed to have a great time. I stayed in camp yesterday and attended the three classes that they put on. All good information, including new uses for tampons and how to distill drinking water in the field from your (or a friendly donor's) urine.
I also wanted to check out the other rigs and I needed to prep my entry for the Dutch Oven competition. There were over 20 entries, four from our group. None of us made the top three. :'(
Following dinner, there was a raffle - one ticket per paid vehicle, and you could only win once. Our group and our Xterra compatriots from Nevada did pretty well at the raffel. I'll let the others talk about their winnings. As it got down to the end, there were only a few tickets left in the pot. My number got pulled for the grand prize - a ShiftPod!!! >:D You can see one in Celt's last picture. It is that silver dome, which happens to belong to knightrider. Or you can check them out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Shiftpods-1640089596261051/ (https://www.facebook.com/Shiftpods-1640089596261051/)
I set it up in the driveway when I got home. Now the neighbors are convinced I am preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

What a great weekend. I'll post pictures shortly, but i had to post this link on behalf of Jay who regaled us with his stories of his past.
