Another new guy (with a question)
« on: May 28, 2009, 04:24:38 PM »

Hey guys

Me (Steve) and my wife (Sandra) just get a 04 XT with the main pourpose of exploring the trails of CA and NV, though we have been on some nearby trails we are completly new on this.

So far the only thing that we have change is the tires, however we notice that a lot of people have modify their vehicles to great extend which lead us to the question.. what should be done/modified in order to protect them and make them more versatile?

Vendor/shop recomendations are very welcome!! Hopefully we'll meet you guys in some of the club trips!!

Best
Steve

First off welcome!

Oh boy.  So many options  ;D

I'd suggest coming out on a run, stock, and see what kind of trails you like.  Most people tend to start with armor from the bottom up, sliders, skid plates.  Once you get into heavier bumpers and larger tires you'll need to start thinking about upgrading your suspension.  One popular kit is offered by PRG.  Here's their site http://www.prgproducts.com/

Welcome aboard.

The X is a very capable vehicle as it sits.  It can be woken up a great deal with just some simple things.  If your goal is exploration, you don't have to go nuts.  If you want to go heavy duty rock crawling, it'll take much more effort and money.

Will the endless mod cycle result in you enjoying the great outdoors that much more?  This is what you must ask yourself.  Most times, not, but it is a very fun and easy vehicle to drive, own, work on, etc.

Tires make a huge difference.  You also can easily lift it safely 1.5 inches for around $50-$60 (called a poor man's lift).  Removing the rear (not front) swaybar affects little and costs nothing.  Better shocks also go a long way.

After that, most go for protection, such as sliders that replace your step rails to protect the body and flat armor that protects the undercarriage.

Getting some gear figured out for camping, cooking, exploring is always a great start.  Best thing is to get outside and use it!
I like sammiches.  And bacon.  Sammiches with bacon.  And chips.  Lots of chips.

I'd recommend sliders first and skid plates second. That's as far as you have to go IMHO for most of our trails and outings. Even the lift isn't a have to have but an extra 2-3" is nice and not all that expensive - a couple hundred dollars if you do your own labor.

a couple hundred dollars if you do your own labor.

And you can organize a mod day if you need help with the labor.  It's fun to get a group together to wrench for a day.

Welcome. And if you are looking for a some extra protection like a new bumper with better recovery points and try looking at Shrockworks. They have some good products. I have the front bumper, and I love it. It took awhile to get but it is great product. Also if you want more lights I have been looking into a place for a roof rack light system. Here is the link for both of

I second this as it can clear you enough for some moderate exploring without to much worry. Now if you follow Xtoolbox , then you might want to have full skids. But the PML is a inexpesnsive improvement, that with some decent tires can take you to many places X-ploring

I bought my 00' Xterra last year and posted this thread asking the same questions.  The responses I got indicated that tires and body armor/skid plates/sliders are the most important things.  Hope this link helps.  You should check out the Technical section more often too.

Welcome to the club. Not sure what model X you have, but if yours has no skid plates I would suggest getting those first.
