I'll be there.  No work that needs to be done, so I'll just supervise, and occasionally channel Fire Marshall / Safety Inspector Dan.  Unless, of course, Dan shows up, in which case he can do that himself.

Thanks for hosting Mitch.  I might try to come.  I need to do my knock sensor bypass.  If this is not an X rated mod day, I might bring another Frontier along.

FYI for mod days at Mitch's house, when he hosts he requests that they be alcohol-free.

Pizza, on the other hand, I'm sure he'd be down for.

Looks like Bruce from Suspension.com is sending me a diff drop kit just in time for the Mod Day of Doom. Hopefully it won't be too labor-intensive and time-consuming considering there are two possible diff drop mods scheduled for that day. I will bring tools, jack, jackstands in case...

Well now Three. I was waiting to see how hard it is to do mitches truck. So maybe if all willing we can tag team to complete them faster. It is up to mitch since I have limited tools on hand as I do most work on base. But I am planning on helping do his first or visa versa. I dont know.

Ok Now I see mitch is holding off so I dont know the game plan now. I am traveling from Point Mugu and I need to make sure I can get my X out of Mitches driveway for sure at the end of the day. But I dont think you are going to need to crack the Diff itself so I am not seeing the need for a gasket. If this is the case I might be out as well. I dont have this gasket and The Nissan Dealers out here and more concerned with trying to sell me another X  versus getting me the parts I need....

Read my post as I have attached instruction for the drop. No gasket needed. But there is one hitch. We need a sawza or some gasoline to burn out the old bushing and then pry out the old metal shim. Another another reason I want Spencer to go since he has done this. You remove the cv on the inside , like I did in your driveway but the inside and then remove the front of the diff and then crossmember. Looks easy enough but the shim part.

I will see what I can do.  I will try to see if Ace carry what I need. If not,  I will try to skip lunch and go to mcfadden dale for some.
I actually never did the diff drop, but it can't be that hard.  you don't need gas, all you need is a propane torch to melt the bushing.

Gasoline?  Propane Torch?

Mitch, how many fire extinguishers have you got on hand?  Also, who's bringing the video cam?

I need the gasket because I have a spiffy way of doing this.  I have all the brackets and stuff the diff attaches to so I will prep them with then new bushings and then remove and replace the old ones.  The bonus is that the diff gets fresh oil in the process.

I'll start sending out my address tonight.

I am thinking more along the lines of sawza. Somthing about Mitch and Fire concerns me. It might be safe since Frank will be there but I dont know.....

Once the spacer is out. There still is the problem of getting this metal sleeve out that was once attached to the spacer. This is the part that has me wondering.

You're right to say "but I don't know...".  If I see fire coming from under a truck with a 20 gallon gas tank, and all I've got in my hand is a piss-ant little fire extinguisher, you can be pretty sure that my basic survival instinct will override my other senses and I'll be running down the street screaming wildly. Come to think of it, I may park my truck a few doors down too.

SLR's kits came with pieces of DOM stock that went in there.

Negative. Just the bushings...

I was concerned about that, especially how it was stated in the website when I ordered them from Bruce (suspensionrestoration.com). He did mention that perhaps the stock one would work? I dunno... is that possible?

Can you please advise?

BTW, do you have a diff drop kit? If so, what kind? Any other issues we should be aware of?

Thanks!
Fred

I don't have one.  Meant to, but never got around to it.

Short of taking measurements off a kit that's not in use to make the pieces on your own, I'm not sure what to tell you.  You will need those pieces.  They don't have to be DOM, but they do have to be there.

Bobby,

So the stock metal ones are no good?

So you mean you've been running your current set-up with no issues or no need for a diff drop?

I just thought it would be a good precautionary measure before I upgrade my UCA's.

I have no idea if what's in there from the factory can be made to work or not. I've never torn that stuff apart, but I seem to remember the factory setup being some not-round pieces that are molded into the rubber.  Have to look under there to be sure.

I've not had any problems so far.  But I will tell you this.  One time on my way back from Colorado, I had it in 4wd on the highway because the ice was so bad.  When the speeds picked up a bit, closer to 40, I got some bad vibration and it literally grumbled and popped itself out of 4wd while I was driving.

Perhaps that could've been avoided with things being lower.  But honestly, I'm not racing and I tend to drive off road on the more conservative side, meaning not attacking the skinny pedal so much.  That's helped keep the breakage to a minimum.

We will see what can be done on Saturday.  We may be able to do something with Chris' gasoline and Spenser's propane torch. ;D

I was speaking with Rachel last night. She offered the use of her torch. I don't know what sort of fuel it uses, but I have a feeling it puts out substantially more heat than some little propane torch.

Also, Heather was just asking me if this was a "clothing optional" mod day. Something about wondering if she needed to do laundry Friday night.  I did not see anything in the previous pages.

Here are the measurements.

3 pieces - 68.67mm long X 25.5mm OD X 13.9mm ID (2.7 in. X 1 in. X 0.54 in.)

1 piece - 47.86 mm long X 25.5mm OD X 13.9mm ID (1.9 in. X 1 in. X 0.54 in.)

I hope this helps but I doubt you'll be able to find this stuff easily.  I suggest you call your source and see if you were shorted some parts or if the kit is suppose to use the stock inserts somehow.

Fred, did that kit come with the metal tube parts that go in the bushings?  Or was it just the bushings.

SLR's kits came with pieces of DOM stock that went in there.

Yes mine has the metal stock , which goes in the middle of the bushings. Energys might have thiers done in the one piece format.

Fred all considering , I dont think you need to put yourself though this stress. Stress is bad . I am doing my diff drop since I am lifted and have aftermarket UCAs. I have some issues I am doing this to resolve. We have options with yours.

1- Wait to do the drop on yours later
2-use the stock ones
3-measure the stock from my kit and do a hardware run. Mitch will have to assist since this is is area.
4-call bruce and ask WTF since he sold the kit and will have to support it

I'll be there.  No work that needs to be done, so I'll just supervise, and occasionally channel Fire Marshall / Safety Inspector Dan.  Unless, of course, Dan shows up, in which case he can do that himself.

Dont forget the Sweats .....XL

Chris, I've got an XL sweat shirt set aside for you (by the way, did you want one or two?).   I'll bring it and the whole box with my on Saturday, in case anyone else wants one.

We have 1 more XL hooded sweat shirt (unless Chris wanted 2), 3 size L hooded sweat shirts, and 2 each XL long and short sleeve t-shirts left.

I don't think a torch is necessary, unless you're going for one of those youtube moments.  In which case, I want it filmed.

I think a drill and holesaw might be a better approach.  Maybe a sawzall.  That's always fun.

you know, I still am in aw at the on board air you built.....nice.....

The diff drop requires two jack stands and one floor jack and I am thankfull for mitch in this case. I just dont know if the stock bolts go though though the dom slugs given with the kits. This is the only thing I can think of?

I am bringing some white grease, WD40 and a small tool set like some sockets and assorted open ends. I know mitch has more stuff but I want everyone to atleast get something done. I Hope everyone sprayed today, with WD40 or liquid wrench. Especially if you have been to SODA Lake.

Also Thanks Frank....

Well, no fires and very little blood.  So the Mod Day of Doom didn't quite live up to it's name.  Thank goodness.  Thanks to Fred, Frank, Chris, Spenser, Bruce and his dad (sorry, I forgot your name) for showing up and making it a fun day.  I learned a lot about doing a diff drop.  Like when you drop the diff make sure your hand is not in the way.

I can vouch for the keep the hand out of the way of the dropping diff/ Its funny how you notice cuts and abrasions with some soap and water. Nothing felll off on the way home. Or I havent found out yet...I still could swear the steering is lighter now. I turned lock to lock and no  rim rubbing?

Everyone , thanks for helping me do this mod. It was way more then I thought. I wouldnt have been able to get out of the driveway without everyone helping. From Frank working the levers to spencer improvising  from the crappy directions given. I think the next one is going to be cake now.

I had forgotten why this club was formed. I think we look to far ahead of the carriage so to speak. It was formed for people who are enthusiastic about and love our Nissan Trucks. Both X and Fronty.  Who share thier time and experience with others in a somewhat friendly enviorment. Ok it was friendly except for mitch. He is so negative.....

good job on the slugs. All considering a great price...

Going to go do that next weekend. I am also going to do the sway bushing at that time. I also got some silicone for the skid plate bolts. I went to autozone for the bushing since they carry energy. They told me that they cant get them. I found them at a online store free ship.

I was poking around under my X this afternoon and I believe I can install the diff drop kit without dropping the diff.  I am going to try to make time sometime this week to try to get the three bolts in the back cross member out.  If I can do that then I can do the diff drop in less than two hours. ;D

All I can say is... THANK YOU! You guys rock! Really learned a lot. I wish we had a picture of the time when it was "all hands on deck" when we were trying to align the front diff. It was like being in the operating room... but dirtier...  :P

Spencer--you da man! Thanks for the spare adjuster... and for hooking it up with the tubing. Thanks for checking for me... just let me know how to send you the money (Paypal, etc.).

Mitch--thanks for hosting the Mod Day of Negativity... (not enough carnage to justify DOOM).   :-[

Chris--for being the "negative" guinea pig... lol! It sure was quite a task. Wish we could have gotten a video of you taking off after the kid in the neighborhood flagged you... very NASCAR-like!

Bruce--it was a pleasure working on your truck! You must be proud to have such a supportive Dad. It was a pleasure meeting you both.

Frank--your generosity and unconditional willingness to help really shines.

Thanks for reminding everyone what the club is all about...  ;D

You are very welcome Bruce!

Also, try to see if you can get another bolt to add to the 2 x 2 that is already mounted on your hitch... just to give it more strength. I think have 3 bolts on each side would really make it solid.

Welp... since your diff is now about less than an inch closer to the ground now... I guess you can be the ground hog... but still negative... haha!  :P
