Title: Radio in the park
Post by: SteeevO on January 02, 2014, 05:02:43 PM
I just got off the phone with Dave, one of the main guys at OAUSA, and we're talking about having a day where we set up some hf equipment, play with APRS and otherwise hang out and kick around radio tech info etc.

it's going to be a one day thing. we don't have a location or date yet but I wanted to see if anyone from here would be interested.

**UPDATE**
We'll gather starting about 9:00 am at the south end of Red Hill Park in Rancho Cucamonga, CA on March 15th, 2014

We're looking to set up 2 HF Station with Dipole antennas as well as play with APRS and GPS stuff.
If you would like to see something in particular, please speak up.
If anyone wants to take a ham test, please let me know ahead of time so the proper accommodations can be made.

Come with an open mind, lots of questions and willing to learn.

Outstanding!
There will also be more of an effort keeping sccx posted on oausa events this year. Dave will likely register soon and introduce himself etc.

I was just kidding.  That place is such a zoo on Saturdays.   You have to admit it would be kind of fun though

It was pretty cool but we also have permission to do it and we blocked off like three rows of the parking lot

So if not at the Bass Pro Shop, where else is tentative in Rancho.  The BPS lot is plenty big, but I think the south side of the parking lot would've been better.

How about Santiago Peak or Cleghorn?

I think the point is to have it in a public place to gain exposure to non hams randy.

Oh :-[

I thought field day ment that we go out in the wild, shoot up stringers with a sling-shot then hoist a full-wave 20M DiaPole antenna in the trees.

Can I still bring my sling-shot?

How about Lost Lake, off the 15 fwy opposite of Cleghorn Rd.  Its part of the  trail network that gets you over the mountain towards Lytle Creek.  Very small quiet lake with a BIG parking lot to house 50 rigs easily.  We just need to check with the local Ranger station on use and any limits or restrictions.

We want this to be an easily accessible gathering for Ham radio not necessarily an off road trip.
Ill be swinging by red hill park, hopefully tomorrow. Its pretty much set in stone that the south end of red hill park in Rancho cucamonga will be the place.

I went by the park and we made the official announcement on the oausa net tonight on the Keller peak repeater.
Well be at Red hill park in Rancho cucamonga on March 15.
The park is long and narrow running north and south. Well be on the very south end near the pond. There will be more details posted on oausa.net and ill be cross posting to here on sccx as well.  But feel free to check out their site as well.

Excellent! See you guys there!

Does anyone want to test or upgrade at the park that day?

We have the ability to administer tests.
We originally weren't planning on it but if a few people want to do it, then I'll get it together.

Looks like we're going to have plenty of radios to play with along with an airmail demo to boot!

As of right now, it's looking like we'll have atleast HF radios on 10 meters, 15 meters, & 20 meters.
at least 2 APRS stations and an airmail station.

What gps are you running with it?
Do you have it set up to receive points as well?

Feel free to bring your stuff with you if you need a hand getting it dialed in.

I got there a bit late. Showed up around 1030 and found a bunch of dudes standing around talking. Imagine that, a bunch of HAM's chit chating....
Got to see some cool gear but couldn't stay for the real cool stuff.
    Perhaps some other time.

Here's a shot of Steevo setting up the HF antenna and Terry ready to catch him.

This H2 had a ton of work done to it. Only snapped one of the center console, but the whole rig was killer!

I had all 3 of my kids with me. They enjoyed the playground and duck pond. Those are turtles over on the right shore.
Thanks Steve for including us on this.
