Title: Hey from Big Bear
Post by: ManduhO on December 26, 2015, 06:54:02 PM
Another girl infiltrating the boys club  :)

I was directed here from thenewx and I immediately saw the Adopt-A-Trail is Burns Canyon, aka my favorite way to get to Pioneertown for bison burgers at Pappy and Harriet's, so I already have a feeling I'll like it here!

So a little about me I guess: I've been interested in the xterra since about when it came out (hellooooo commercial with solar yellow xterra every commercial break), but never got around to getting one. Hell, I didn't know they made them still past 2009 until I started searching for a suitable snow vehicle to replace my 350z after moving to Big Bear. And I kept the Z I was previously using as my daily driver. That thing is a beast on these winding mountain roads in clear weather. When I found out 15  was it, I stepped my search up big time. 15 prices are so inflated, so I grabbed a 2012 4wd S trim in Super Black 3 weeks ago now. Even  getting this one was hard since every dealer seemed to be selling them as quick as I could call. I missed a lava red 14 pro4X by an hour. AN HOUR! The pain is still there guys...

Typical girl, this was longer than I intended. Happy to have been led here and hoping to eventually do some rides

TONS of X's up here and that's how I got my mind back on them.  Thought I wanted a Subaru, too low. Thought I wanted a Wrangler, hubs said he wouldn't work on it (no longer his profession but he's a certified mechanic). Xterra it is lol!

Got any favorite Big Bear trails? I've really only done Burns and Rattlesnake Canyons, and a smooth ride into Holcomb Valley. I'd love to do a Gold Mountain ride (great view of it from my backyard), but I'm not sure if I can do it basically running stock right now.

I noticed! I'm excited to maybe bump into some of you all. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if I have pre-x days for me. Last time I rode Burns out to Pioneertown, my friend pulled the chopped top bronco we were in over so about 4-5 xterras could pass us. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if someone on here was in one of them

View of Gold Mountain from your backyard...wow, really nice!

Welcome from Oceanside (North San Diego County).  :)

My wife was a huge Subaru fan for years, but now loves everything lifted and off road.  Congratulations on the acquisition of your first Xterra, you will love it!

Everyone on this site is great, and will help you either on the forum or at a mod day to empty your wallet/handbag/satchel/purse.  ;)

When you get time, post up a Display Case thread (build thread) and show us some pics of the X so we can follow (er, "help" you) the build and mods as they progress.

Welcome from the High Desert. I was living in Fawnskin for a while and that's what made me get my Xterra. I had a ton of fun up there in my X while it was stock. You'll love it! Taking the dirt roads from Fawnskin to the Deep Creek Hot Springs is really fun in the summer.

I'm sure we'll be there soon for a snow run. I volunteer at Bear Mountain with the Adaptive program so you may see me around.

I could virtually guarantee you that was an SCCX group run. Anytime that many Xterras are together at the same time, especially along Burns Canyon, it's usually the group. :) Do you remember when this was? I'll bet we could even narrow down to the specific people you saw. :)

I think the last organized event we had along Burns Canyon would have been our "CANVAZ" event, which was Columbus Day weekend. Speficially, there was a group of 5 of us that ran Rattlesnake Canyon from the desert floor up to Burns Canyon and back up into big bear. I wonder if this is the group you saw? We had quite a mix of rigs that day - a champaigne ("Desert Stone Metallic") rig with a black aftermarket front bumper, a white rig with a black aftermarket front bumper, a silver rig with a light bar and winch mounted to the OEM front bumper, a red xterra with a bunch of stickers, and a black rig with a huge california flag flying off of the back. I suppose we were pretty noticable. :D

We had another group of about 5 or 6 Xterras run the exact same route about a month earlier, as well. There were a few more heavily modified Xterras in that group.

Will do! I've got my head unit upgrade project this week so I'll actually have something to show haha!

That was it! I was doubtful until you mentioned the giant flag haha! How funny. That's my favorite ride for now, but really the only one I've done a couple times and feel comfortable with. I know a few key stops also, like where a local snowboard shop owner keeps his porn stash, that are along there. They don't write that particular point of interest on any trail maps lol

Ooh, yes, the hot springs are on my list!

And that's awesome -- the Adaptive program is so great!  My husband is a snowmaker at Summit so I can move between Summit and Bear (and now Mammoth and June with the buyout) to ski or board, and I haven't been to Bear yet this year but maybe after the holiday mess dies down, I might see ya up there

How funny, such a small world. Here's the photo thread from that weekend (including photos of that particular run) if you want to take a look. :) http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=3341.0

And foot in mouth moment - I forgot to mention one more rig that was with us, the yellow 1st gen Xterra. Sorry Alex!

Looks like it was a blast! I hope to join you all next time. That was definitely the group we let pass. Most definitely!

I'm gonna pull out some local knowledge and say those foundations in the album with the giant screws sticking out are fairly recent. Not seeing them in person but just by picture, I'm guessing 50s to 70s, I'm guessing the latter...but I'd have to see the threads in person. Mining up here is still alive and well as long as you own a claim, or belong to a mining club where anyone who is a member can mine on the club's claims. That cave is pretty cool looking too..its not one I can recall off hand I've been to. Neat! My favorite part of living here is all the cool stuff I haven't found yet
