Not a huge deal...buuuut....

When folks are quoting a post, make sure you type outside the actual forum code when you hit the QUOTE button on the post, or the post doesn't render correctly and looks like this:

Just take a moment to make sure your text is outside the last one of these code markings /quote that is inside the brackets [  ], or else your response ends up inside the quote and lost in translation per say.

Scepter Cans
« Reply #892 on: October 28, 2015, 11:04:31 AM »
I posted this on TNX and thought it would be helpful for people on here.

I bought two military surplus Scepter fuel cans from a dude on Expo.  I'm not sure how or where he got them, but now I have them.
There are some steps to take to get them ready for use with gasoline.

So, here it is.

Quote from: spoolup;2782138
Ahh I get it, I bought them as a full on package that way. Ebay does have Viton gaskets and retention straps thru a member called Jagmte. I have a few of his accessories for my water cans (FYI LCI sells them for the cheapest and even offers free shipping on water cans, I have 20 of them, and have had some for over 10 years still going strong).

He also has a direct site here http://www.jagmte.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=59

Looks like he is running low on a lot of things...

bought one along with new retaining caps and gaskets for my 3

Just wanted to follow up on this as my stuff came in and I've installed it.
I bought two Viton gaskets, two red cap retention straps and a spout.

(and yes, I know my rear wiper blade looks like a sad fu manchu.  I will be replacing it soon :D)

*the spout is way nicer than what I was expecting.  I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it's great!

You guys that have used Scepters (looking at Shift_X, Un4seen4, & spoolup in particular) did you do anything to clean or refurb the actual can itself - especially the ones that were previously used for diesel - before filling it with gas?  Or is it just get the right gasket on and you're set?

My cans were previously used for diesel as *most of the military sourced Scepter cans probably were.
To properly store gas, from what I've read, you need to first check what type of gasket you have.  Most likely, you'll end up with a rubber gasket intended for diesel.  You'll need to get Viton gaskets.  Next, you'll need to ensure that your gasket retention flange is in good condition.  They will sometimes crack.

Once that's done, you can reassemble and be good to go.  Because I was already there, and they had them, I bought red cap retention straps.  I guess red is the universally accepted denotation that these cans are intended to store and transport gasoline.  I just think they look pretty cool.

The cap retention straps take a little more force than you would think to get them apart.  This video was pretty helpful, if not a little long winded.

That's the guy I bought the Viton gaskets from.

In the video he makes mention that you can use a tool to reassemble the caps, but I was able to do it with only my hands.  I guess if you had hundreds of cans to do, the tool would be handy, but it's not needed.

As far as cleaning the cans go, I put a gallon of 87 octane gas in each and am going to let that slosh around for a while.  That should clean them out pretty well.  The problem is, now I've got two gallons of gas used to clean diesel residue that I'm not sure what to do with :D

Final note on where I bought this stuff from.  JAGMTE is in Florida so that's easy.  Came USPS.  DS Tactical is in Canadia.  I placed my order using paypal and it shipped the next day via Canada Post.  There was no tax, no shipping charge and the items came in 5 days (including over a weekend)

OBA update:

If a picture is worth 1000 words than these photos should add up to about seventy nine.

I ain't no Photo Joe, but I hope that you get the picture :P

BTW it works great using the relays that came with the Tsunamis.

Awesome! I thought your tank was going to be 5 gallons, not 5 liters. I was wondering where you were going to fit a tank that big.

Whats the verdict on the air output? Does it fill your tires pretty quickly?

Is that big round white thing in some of the pics a speaker of some sort?
