volunteer ham operators
« on: February 07, 2013, 03:34:22 PM »
Copied from just runs email list.  Im looking at my schedule to participate in this event so any other sccx hams wanna join me?

Volunteers are needed with a 4x4 and their Ham Radio License to help with communications for the Old Goat 50 mile Ultra Race Saturday, March 23 in the Santa Mountains between San Juan Capistrano and Lake Elsinore.

The volunteers will be stationed at Check Points along the race course and communicate runner's bib numbers to Race HQ as the runners pass the check point. Also radio operators call for help in case of runner injury or exhaustion.

If you are a licensed Ham with a 4x4 and would like to volunteer to help, contact Mark Utley [utley.mark@gmail.com].

Please let Mark know you are a JustRuns member.

I am helping again for this event. I have done this several times and always enjoy the experience.

Sounds good randy.  I emailed mark with my interest in helping.  Looks like there are some other opportunities posted up by justruns for a couple more runs happening in July and October that need hams with 4x4 to help with comms to help out.  You get a T-shirt and food so I know I'm in :-)

Thanks for the update.  Keep me posted on this thread.  I wanna use my toys for good, not evil (like making fun of CBers).

Did you get a spot randy? I think I grabbed the last one and I'm going to be with a guy named randy from just runs.  Some other the other opportunities:

Dirty Feet Productions needs volunteers to help with
4x4 Transportation and Ham Radio communications for two
2013 Ultra Races in the Santa Ana Mountains between San
Juan Capistrano and Lake Elsinore.

The Harding Hustle is a 50K race on June 29.  ***Date changed from July 6***
The Twin Peaks Ultra 50 mile race is October 19th.

See more information about the races at
http://trailrunning.dirtyfeet.us/volunteer.html

For transportation help they need 4x4s able to carry at
least 2 passengers as well as the driver. A 4 door is
preferred but a 2 door with a back seat is OK.

For Communications a 50 Watt Dual Band (440) is
preferred but a dual band HT is acceptable. A
Ham License is REQUIRED for the Communications staff.

If you can help with either Transportation or
Communications please contact Jessica DeLine
jessica@dirtyfeet.us

Please let Jessica know you are a JustRuns Member.

I just sent an Email to Mark.  I will let you know if I get in.  Did you already send one to Jessica, or are they the same group?

I believe they are different organizations,  I haven't heard back from Jessica yet.  Mark did inform me that I got a spot near the start finish line so it will be a long day since all runners will go by twice.  Seems like a pretty simple gig, copy down bib numbers and split times and radio them back to central.

Yeah you're right, Mark put me on the alternate list, but there's always someone bailing out.  So we'll see. ???
I'll Email Jessica next and see what happens.

Yea I'm sure somebody will.  If not, no worries, you've got enough karma already :-)

I have yet to hear from Jessica but those events are still a ways off so no sweat

Got a reply from Jessica, they still need volunteers for the July 6th June 29 and October 19th races.  Anyone else besides randy and I up to watch crazy people run forever?

Yea it looks like she had to change the date because of fourth of July.   The website shows June 29th.  She told me she needs 3 to 4 4x4 hams and around 10 stationary hams with 4x4 being a plus since the stations are in remote mountain tops.
