Since we are under federal decree with black helicopters following us around.... Anyone want to make a run out into Borrego for a night or two to escape the madness (before it gets hotter than the 7th hinge of hell). Some social distancing carne asada, Dutch oven, tacos, whatever awesome group feed(s) might be pretty well received at this point.
-
On the Book of Face, someone from the Frontier/Xterra group posted a picture of the CHP citing people for being in the Ocotillo OHV area. Story was that they shut it down because being out off-road by yourself wasn't "social distancing" and that they needed to go back home and hide in their bunkers.
-
I wonder what "The rest of the story" was with that?

Photo is real , but they weren't there for people off-roading
It was a staging area
But on the other hand

Well that's certainly confusing. In reading that closure notice it says all trails will remain open.
-
So you can drive through but you can't camp? I guess the mules still need to be able to run drugs & illegals without worrying about getting a ticket.

Ha! Well, there is always a catch.

The confusion is coming from multiple agencies who manage these lands and each of them having a different policy right now. Ocotillo OHV is a State Park, and the State of California has decided to shut down all "developed" facilities. I'm not really sure how or why they consider the entire park to be developed. It would make sense to shut down the public restrooms, campsites, and shade structures and what not, but I don't understand why it's an issue to just go out into the middle of the park by yourself and be self sufficient. I guess they figure people can't really separate self sufficiency from dependence upon the facilities, so it's just easier to shut the whole thing down.
The BLM order is basically the same - they're shutting down any "developed" areas, but open lands remain open, including trails. My understanding is that all Federal Forest lands in our area have also done the same (I saw a post locally saying that the Wildomar OHV area has been shut down). So you can go to Big Bear and run Pontiac Sluice, but you can't stay the night at a campground afterwards (and I would imagine yellow post sites are also off limits, as they are usually "developed" with a fire ring and picnic table). Open/dispersed camping is ok.
So with Anza Borrego also being a state park, I'm not really sure what the orders are out there. I would expect that campgrounds and restrooms, and certainly the visitor's center would be shut down, but is it OK to use the trails or go camp in an open wash? Who really knows anymore.
Edit: I found the State Park System's announcement. Looks like vehicular access to all State Parks is closed (Anza Borrego is also a State Park).

McNitPicky here, but isn't Ocotillo Wells an SVRA?
Special Vehicle Recreation Area?
But, here's what it says on their site (http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1217):
UPDATE (March 31, 2020): This park is temporarily closed to vehicular access, including for off-highway vehicle riding. The park remains open for locals who wish to walk, hike and bike (in parks with bike trails) in the park, provided they practice social/physical distancing of 6 feet or more. This is not the time for a road trip to a destination park or beach.
In an effort to prevent visitation surges and help stop the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), State Parks has implemented the following safety measures to date:
Closed some parks, meaning all trails and restrooms within these parks are closed.
Closed vehicular access at remaining parks, including for off-highway vehicle riding.
Closed all campgrounds, museums and visitor centers.
Cancelled all events.
A list of closures is available online at parks.ca.gov/FlattenTheCurve. The list is dynamic and updated on a regular basis.

The acronym SVRA actually means "State Vehicular Recreation Area." It's part of the California State Parks network. :(

NO, JOE! It's SPECIAL!!!!! Like ME!
But also, you're right.
What about the Mojave Preserve?
-
Mojave Preserve is federal (it's a National Monument, which is the same as a National Park, but you're allowed to hunt within it). The National Parks Service does not yet have a unified and coordinated approach like the State Parks system, and each park is doing something a little different. Most National Parks have closed all developed sites, including campgrounds, visitor's centers, and day use areas (picnic locations, parking lots, etc.). Some have closed entirely.
The Mojave Preserve specifically has closed the Barstow and Kelso Visitor's Centers, suspended all commercial use permits, suspended all interpretive and interactive programs (such as guided hikes), and canceled group campground reservations. As of last week, the Hole in the Wall and Midhills Campgrounds remain open for parties of 10 or less, and all hiking trails and paved/unpaved roads remain open. Here's their official press release: https://www.nps.gov/moja/learn/news/upload/MOJA-press-release-3-21-2020-FINAL-2.pdf

Anza Borrego State Park also posted notice of closure on FaceBook the other day. What makes absolutely no sense is they closed it to all vehicular traffic, including off roading, yet you can still hike as long as you're practicing social distancing. Guess you have a harder time contracting the virus when you're walking around others than catching it in your closed up vehicle. The more you know I guess...

An update from BLM - dispersed camping is allowed:

Riverside County has extended stay at home orders until June 19th...this is getting really old.
-
Howdy ya'll. Well, we deciding to go out and have a social distancing good time this weekend. Our plan is to camp on the BLM land near Silverwood Lake (open minded to other location) and get our pup acclimated to camping and off roading. We plan on running Cleghorn has well. Anyone interested in going out in a very small group?
-
Sounds like a fun weekend. The weather is probably going to be perfect for you guys! I wish we could come along. :(
My understanding is that Cleghorn has been getting pretty packed on the weekends, so just bring your patience. Two Saturdays ago, one of the facebook pages I follow said there was a "several hour wait" to get onto the trail, as groups of vehicles were lining up along Cleghorn Road at the 15.
-
Ah man, was hoping you and yours could get out.
Far has planning goes. If no one from SCCX gets out this weekend. Are plan is to wheel Cleghorn Monday AM with one of the fb groups. Optimistic it will be less crowded on a Monday AM.
With no GONE this year. I magically have an extra week and half vaca to burn. Brit is also off work for the next 3 months. So, we are down for trips in small groups. Whether it's a few long weekend trips, or a big week long 395 run sometime soon.
We have also considered Swamp Lake trail for a weekend.

Well, we're doing it again. Headed out Thurs night to Sun. Probably near the Lytle Creek area. Last weekend we found a place pretty deep in the forest land and had it all to ourselves. Some great trail runs near by too.
If anyone is interested, let me know I will drop you a pin.

Awesome! Looks like a blast!

Still cleaning that Arizona dirt. The radiator seemed to have an infinite amount of dirt in it. Glad I took time to clean it before putting the bump back on. It was surprising. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200603/46ea346ac72db9a9928910e104fab021.jpg)

That looks like a really great time. Hopefully you didn't need 4:56 gears, 35" tires and a comms plan with single malt as a requirement to get back there.....?

This thread seems like the best place to apologize my anti social distancing.
I will keep the details for a campfire, but I will offer up a poll for any guesses that you might have.
1. Crashed the X, and too embarrassed to tell anyone.
2. Arrested on a weapons, alcohol, indecent exposure, milf porn, or smuggling charge. Circle two.
3. Corona virus
4. Sex change
5. Joined a monastery
6. Joined a convent Note: See # 4.
7. Alien abduction with or without probing
Thanks for playing.
I have been doing some fishing and just bought a Kayak. Let the good times roll.

So wait what, you crashed the X after being freed from the aliens post sex change which led to the public indecency charge. Since clemency was shown you had to join a monastery but they quarantined you out to the pond in front of your house in your kayak in efforts to stop you spreading the Covid. See what happens when you go unsupervised for longer than a day. Don't get me going about the time in the 7th grade when you thought it would be funny to try and join a convent by jumping over the wall at midnight.

Which "two" are you circling for #2? I'll go with Milf Porn, and Indecent Exposure.
But on a serious note - I hope everything is OK Randy, and that it's not #1 (crashed the X).

I can see Randy sitting there with a PBR
An assault riffle in one hand and his Willy in the other while watching MILF porn with Immigrants

Thanks for all the love guys.
No Joe, the X is running better than ever.
With all this heat, I think we need a beach or lake run. (see how I'm working my kayak and bass rod into the plan) ::)

Are you saying you want me to tell you to go jump in a lake?

I'm going with 2...and betting either a visit or letter from the good ole' ATF.

. . . a visit or letter from the good ole' ATF.
Yeah, you don't want that. If we ever get together in person again you can ask me how I know . . . after you get done laughing (politely) at what I'm currently driving.
