Valley of the Moon Jacumbu
« on: April 12, 2015, 04:35:29 PM »
Has anyone ever been to Valley of the Moon?  It's a lot of fun, and it could be an easy day trip, or a nice overnight.  I've only been there once, so I wouldn't say I'm familiar with the area.  I would love to plan a trip there!

Used to go there all the time, camped many nights.  Stopped after a few close calls with illegals, smugglers and a crack team of border patrol agents.   Still a fun area for a couple hours or a day trip, just make sure you don't accidentally cross the border...

They made it a little hard to drive across the border by sealing the road off with rocks at the end.  When we were there, not a single person was seen the entire time.

There are still places where you can accidentally get into mexico, in one area the border "fence" consisted of some barb wire and engineering stakes.  The barb wire was trampled into the dirt and the stakes were knocked over.

I've also been locked and loaded on by some border patrol agents hiding behind a rock outcrop in the dark, no identification from them what so ever, they almost got shot when I heard the rookie rack his shotgun...

spent 4 hours going up in snow.... then got lost for 2 hrs getting down in the dark
one of the best day trips I've had....
no smugglers, 3 horses, and 1 BP watching our lights come down the mountain in the dark

Yea I will say that I have maybe a handful of incidents out of hundreds of trips up there, but the few kinda stick with you.

Also bp has electronic ground  monitoring up there, so they will always meet you at the bottom for a sanity check, I've also had a bp blackhawk helicopter fly over us, we apparently tripped some sensors...

I would love to do a day trip if anyone is interested,  just don't feel comfortable leading.
