[SBNF_AAT] Halloween Run 10/25/2014
« on: October 22, 2014, 04:53:31 PM »
Hello Adopt-a-Trail Clubs!

It's that time of year once again!!!  Time to get 'spooked out' in the Forest!

Meeting at Big Bear Discovery Center at 0830 and leaving at 0845.

Many people have come to our Forest with hopes to 'get away from it all!!.'  MANY DID.  From as far back as written history provides us, our forest has been witness to thousands of humans that lost their lives in a cadre of methods.  From 'accidental' to 'mysterious' even 'incomprehensible and phenomenal tales of individuals ultimate dates with fate.'

First, we will be 'passing' through the 'haunts' of venerable Holcomb Valley.  After we visit the often touted 'spirit-filled graveyard', we'll be off to drive up and over White Mountain Road (Black Diamond) 'site of many dreadful crashes and bizarre tales'.  Next, we'll stop for a 'break' at Horse Spring Campground in hopes to 'rattle some bones and revive some souls'.  Returning to Big Bear Valley (by 1630) via the infamous 'disgusting ghost story alley' 3N14.

Come, 'ONLY if you dare.'  However, please be a 'prudent soul.'  Bring a vehicle that is capable to maneuver over a black diamond obstacle course that can lead to 'serious injury or ???'.  Dress your 'bodies' in layers of clothing to prevent 'hypodermic death or heat exhaustion in misery.'  Please remember to bring treats to prevent 'starvation on the trail.'  Lots of cool liquids to 'prevent death by dehydration.'

Have a CB or Ham radio to help you  'unravel the many mysteries of the forest' to be had.

'Until then, have a bloodcurdling week!!!!'

Ranger Greg

I'm going to be camping at Hanna Flat Campground (site 17) with some buddies this weekend.

My rig isn't or better yet I'm not capable of doing black diamond trails.

So, if you're in the area come say hello!

Also, what's the ham frequency going to be?

White mountain is easier than gold mountain, in my opinion it should be rated a blue square. Don't be scared by the black diamond sign.

I was going to hit the AAT trail from start to finish Saturday. Possibly staying in a family cabin on Friday night. I was going to do some clean up and trail clearing as necessary. Either staying overnight on the trail half way through or doing it in a day and heading back to San Pedro Saturday evening. I want to familiarize my self with our local AAT. I'll be picking up a cheap-o cobra cb with a magnet mount so I can try it out. Plus I just have a stock 4x4 so I don't know how extreme I can take it, although I've done almost all the trails at Gorman some that black diamond. If anyone has pics or more info that would be great!

The picture and video section has tons of pictures and info about trails, including big bear trails.

Several things:
If you do any work on any of the trails up there not just 2N02, please report number of rigs, number of people and total hours "worked"  AAT counts door to door so our organization gets credit for your effort.

Next if you do the Halloween Run, make sure you have recovery points( Hooks, D rings, etc)  front and back on your rig.   Also a 20-30' tow strap (No metal hooks).   Then put yourself right behind the person you think is the most capable wheeler up there and follow every move he/she makes.   And if you feel you are above your head a little, do not be afraid to ask for a spot.

Most of all have fun.

I have a D ring for my tow hitch in the back but nothing in the front as I'm stock. I've driven a lot of trails on 2wd trucks so I can drive the terrain with out using 4x4. I've taught my g/f how to spot and she's learning. I also carry my own compressor so I can air down. If I have a stock front end any suggestions on front end recovery points? Or a tow strap around the frame and shackle it? Sorry if I'm bringing the topic off point.....thanks for the info!

So I just did the whole 2N02 trail from palm desert to big bear lake and back home to Pedro. I put two signs back in the ground that were knocked over or fell down. Picked up a whole black bag worth of trash and still a shit ton left on the trail....half of the rusted out car is still there. Located one of two shooting ranges which needs cleaned badly...more to post tomorrow with pics just wanted to get a bit down before I pass out...

Ok so now that I've rested and football is over I can post on my awesome trip. I left my house in San Pedro at 9pm Friday night and got to the pilot truck stop on the 10fwy about 11pm. Spent the night at the truck stop and left the next morning in-between 8:30-9:00 am and headed to the desert side of the trial in pioneer town. As I stopped to take a few pics of the adopt a trail sign with the sccx sticker on it I noticed a sign behind it was down. So I dug two hole in the same spots as it had fallen down wiped the sign off and raised it up. The concrete was still attached so I buried that in hopes that it will stay for a bit. Not a permanent solution solution though. I took pics before and after. Along the trail I stopped to pick up various bottles broken and whole, cans new and even some old school pop top ones, and other various trash bits and remnants from human traffic. I filled up a whole black bag that I later took to the big bear dump station. I found a geocache along the way. I wasn't even looking for it, I love to get out and take lots of pics and stumbled upon it. I took pics of what was left of the old car....p.s. I'm in when we want to go haul it out. Still picking up trash along the way ran into some cool people in jeeps. I was the X that I saw all day on the trail. Took a look in a old mine shaft, and had a cool cup o noodles lunch on the trail in a tucked away spot. I continued on along the trail and got to the last fork in the road and noticed another  sign was down 2N02 sign hung on a wooden post. So I stopped dug a hole for it and put it back. I only found one of two marked shooting areas which could use some TLC badly. Once I left there I continued on and finally got the first glimpse of the lake. I got down the the bottom and drove into town and dumped the trash off at the refuse site. I was off the trail about 5:30. I got some food to go and took it home with me and ended up back in San Pedro about 10:30 pm Saturday night. I hope this write up is enough along with the pics to get some hours for our club.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/27/365ee7cd6cbe026e0592e561c4454ed9.jpg
