Celt's New Years Run - 2016
« on: January 08, 2016, 09:56:36 PM »
I didn't take that many photos this trip.
Definitely not very many good photos  O0
Everything came out of the iPhone 6 Plus.

Anyways, New Years Eve was a disaster for me!  I was suppose to have the day off from work, but ended up working almost a 10 hour day.  Leaving an escrow office in Huntington Beach at 3:30pm, I made my way to the desert.  After a 4 hour drive, I found myself parked on the side of S22 in the dark trying to eek out the last remaining bits of cell coverage to check the thread and figure out on google maps exactly where I was suppose to be.  Then, like a mirage, I see the distinct headlights and bumper combo that can only be knightrider!

We headed in and up the washes to find the rest of the group.  It was a pretty neat drive at night.

We ran into oncoming traffic at a pretty inopportune time, but to our delight, it was freaking Randy and Nilda heading the opposite way to find Celt's wife and kid.  We said hello in the way that only Duff's Landing Mod Day participants know how and proceeded on our way.

With rough (but excellent) directions from Randy, we made our way toward camp.

About 20 minutes later as we're plotting along, we hear BOOM and the sky erupts into brilliant color.  We knew we were close.

The fire was blazing and the mood was great when we arrived at camp.  Introductions made, I got to setting up my new tent.  Drinks were had, stew was consumed, mortars were sent skyward as we celebrated the arrival of 2016!

(the above words are because I took 0 photos on NYE, lol)

The next morning, we were delighted to have Terry and his Daughter show up in camp.  Day plans were set for some wheeling and sight seeing fun and we were off!

(here's where the pictures start)

At the crack of 10:30am, we were off!
I decided to leave my truck at camp and ride with Jordan for the day.

We headed up to a mine of some sorts, that wasn't really a mine, just a neat dirt road that ended.  I'm sure there are mines an tunnels and all sorts of things to explore over there, but we didn't' find anything

With the wheeling itch scratched, plans were set to visit the last truly free place to live in America - Slab City.

Slab City is something that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated.  Not understood, but appreciated.

Jordan and I found some interesting artwork on display and had to pose his truck next to it.  The giraffe tho.

I wasn't entirely comfortable snapping pics of the living arrangements people had out there.  Just seemed like if you wanted to take from them (pictures) you should give them something in return.  I had nothing to give and we had more things to see so we moved on.

Salvation "Mountain" was next on the docket.

Let me Google that for you.

After Jordan had his fill of hippies, we made our way back to camp.
To say we did it, we drove the opposite way around the Salton Sea on the way back.  We were rewarded with a fantastic sunset over the water!

We had a great time getting to know Jake and his wife.
The kids were having a blast finding just the right sticks to put in the fire!

The next morning called for wieners on the skottle.
Jordan and I got some practice preparing different items on this new piece of kit.  Eggs, peppers and onions, etc.

And like that it was time to boogie!  Jordan went due west - Toro and I caravanned as far as the dinosaurs  off the 10 where the temptation was just too much!

Thanks for everyone who came out and made bringing in 2016 a joy for me!

Thanks Steve, really nice glimpse from that trip. I wish I could have stayed a second night with you guys. I was seriously considering calling into work with "eye problems" sayin; I can't see myself comin into work but the responsible part of me took over much to my shagrin after seeing those pics.

Just a little history on that Calcite Mine. It's an open pit mine that they dug calcite out of. It's everywhere out there in that area. When you are driving around and the sun hits it the stuff shimmers like a mirror. Anyway, the significance of it is it was mined to make the Norton Bombsight that the B-24's and B-17's used in WWII. That was a top secret bombsight that enabled precision (for the time) bombing. That open pit mine directly contributed to the winning of the war and our way of life. That entire area is where Gen. Patton trained his armored division for N. Africa because the conditions closely resemble the terrain over there. That whole area still has all manner of evidence of our guys out there training prior to being shipped out to war. Sometimes when I go out there, I feel a closeness and a sort of reverence for it all. We are extremely lucky to have such a vast and amazing area to go wheeling in that also holds geological and crazy historical value. That entire area over the millennium was covered with salt water and fresh water oceans over the millennium. There are Native American encampments all over the place out there to include many pictograph sites still intact.

Going into all those areas always leaves me a little bit awestruck and happy down to my soul to be able to see them and in a way take part in it all just by being there.

Ha! Caught him in his most hated environment. This is a very elusive and hard to get photograph, it should be preserved into the annals of the forum history as proof that The Duff Man does have and communicates on a cellular device!

He does communicate via a mobile device, but I heard he refuses to text.

If he used a cellular device capable of texting it would be a different story.    Look it's a "flip phone"  circa 1995?

Oh Toro, that's too funny!  I have no idea when you took that.  It had to be the pie shop.  BTW my sweatshirt, or what you kids call a "hoodie" is three times as old as my star trek styled phone.  So to quote Einstine; 'Time is relative' ;)
I'm just glad nobody noticed my bed-head :P

Just wanted to start this post by saying my family and myself had a great time getting to know everybody that was there.  I am already looking forward to upcoming events we can attend and getting to know more people. We had only planned on staying the first night but the second day adventures lasted into the night and the kids were wanting to stay again so we made it happen.  Onto the pictures.

Morning coffee and breakfast before packing up the campsite
