I am interested in the Gun. How hard is it to buy one. I have shot many in my Job and personal life. But I have never bought one and I know california likes to recreate the wheel whejn it comes to things. Any thoughts?
In addition to Buffalo's response, There might be more you have to deal with.
California requires everyone wanting to buy a handgun to have an HSC, or handgun safety certificate. It's a test you have to take and then you're issued the SC card, which you have to present when buying the gun. It's common sense easy if you've had firearm training/exposure, $25 for this IIRC, and good for a number of years. Now as active military, you may be exempt from this, and the safe-handling demo you have to give when you pick up a gun at the end of the 10-day wait period. But the onus to really know this is on you; many gun shops aren't that great when it comes to really knowing the rules.
Also, you have to show two residency items that show matching addresses. Your driver's license and car reg/utlility bill, something like that. Because you're military, depending on your official state of residence, vs. where your living when posted to a base, that may pose an issue for you. If you're officially a resident of another state, then you'd have to have the gun shipped to an FFL (dealer) in your "home state."
Dealers are legally limited to $35 for PPT (personal party transfers) and have to do them as part of their licensing. But many don't like to do them, so bear that in mind. Finding a good shop who'll work with you on this will make the process easier; those are the shops to reward with your future business IMHO.
