Bee Canyon Trip

Took Summer my new dog out to see if she would behave off road to the Bee Canyon trail just to the east of Hemet. It was a nice trip as the winter storm did some nice damage to the trails. The trail is blue diamond and not much of a challenge - the weather proved a bigger challenge. We camped about 50 feet from a rather large babbling brook and there was lots of moisture in the air. Last night the temperature dropped below zero but the fire threat was low and there was a nice fire pit provided at the yellow post campground.

It was the anniversary of my previous dog's death and we had a little memorial at the campground, shed some tears, and told stories of what a great dog Trixie was.

This morning while Noon was still sleeping I took Summer for a walk and let her off leash ... she caught wind of a squirrel's scent and was off. I chased her up a nice 100 foot tall hill and along the ridge line crashing through brush trying to find her. She out ran me and I could no longer hear her license and ID jingling. I searched for five more minutes and made the decision to go down and wake Noon to assist with the search. I hustled down the hill and Summer was running up the road toward me. I have no idea where she took off to or what brought her back ... I thanked Trixie's spirit ... and put her on a leash.

The road is about 15 miles long and there's just two campsites along the way. The first was occupied but we got the second. There are some state parks about three to four miles north of the Idyllwild-Pine Cove exit on the 243. On the way home we took the more scenic route north along the 243 through the Mount San Jacinto State Park to the 10 freeway. Lots of vistas and views to enjoy.

Summer has some big paws to fill, but seems to have captured a couple of hearts already.

Ran this trail last year with my son, and enjoyed its scenery and vistas along the way.  Did you happen to see the marker towards the end of the trail commemorating the speed of light tests conducted in mid to late 20's?

Nice trip Paul.  Man that dog looks just like Trixie.

She does and shares some of the traits of her older sister but plenty of her own. Trixie wouldn't chase a stick and was fearful of fire, Summer doesn't share those. She runs with the same bouncing/bounding gate, pounces like a cat, and is very alert to people approaching like Trixie.

Once I get her to stay withing voice control range I'll feel better. Around camp she behaved just fine never straying too far.

Yes, that's about where I aired up. It's amazing that using the technologies of the 1920's they were able to calculate the speed of light to within so close to where we now measure it. There's a whole little village of trailers and cabins in that area with lots for sale or for rent, looks like the economy has really impacted the tourist visits.

If there weren't just the two camping spots I'd be more happy - it's a quick shot from my Riverside location out there but a gamble that both sites will be taken. We arrived mid-morning on Friday and the first site had a couple of trucks there that look like they'd been there all week. They had a couple of tents, dogs, tarps covering split wood piles, looked like a homestead!

There's more trails out to the north in the park that I want to try out and explore.

This is a great picture.  Everything blends in nicely with the scenery.  And I notice Summer was sticking her tongue out at you.
