We had a great time today, and the weather was really nice despite the rain on the coast. Out in the desert there were some great cloud formations, a light breeze, and it was nowhere near as cold as I had expected. Six of us pulled out of San Diego together, and part way there Dave joined us in his Jeep. We waited at the meet spot until 10:45 but no one else showed up, so we were off to 17 Palms Oasis. From there we checked out the Pumpkin Patch in the Ocotillo Wells SRV Area, then backtracked to just before S-22, and down Ella Wash to our lunch spot. After lunch we went to Vista del Malpais, then through Short Wash and out to Fonts Point. Here is my first attempt at video, handheld with a Blackberry while driving. The good news is that it's only about 17 seconds long. The bad news is that's about 3 seconds too long, and it looks like I might have crashed at the end, but it's actually just operator error in not knowing how to work the device. One of these days I'll figure out how to edit out the last few seconds. I probably should have cranked up the stereo too, those squeaks are really annoying.

Great run Frank, thanks for leading the way! Alex and I enjoyed meeting everyone (again) and the views and trails were spectacular as usual.

Here are some of my pictures from Saturday. All of the Xterras met in San Diego, and as we passed through Ramona a black Jeep (Dave H.) pulled into line with us. After a quick stop at the Julian Pie Company in Santa Ysabel we were on our way through Ranchita and down the Montezuma Grade. The rain stopped before we started down the hill, and the view from the overlook was nice, with only light wind this time. This wound up being the whole group: me in the lead, followed by John, Justin, Zach, Dave, Mark, and Matt - along with assorted family and friends. No one showed up at the actual meet spot. We got some great views driving down the grade. While we hung out at the Arroyo Salado meet spot Dave made a few minor adjustments to his Jeep. (Well, I don't know if they were really minor - I base that on the size of the hammer used, figuring if they were major adjustments he would have used a BFH.) Ready to roll - next stop: 17 Palms Oasis. I was surprised at how few people we saw all day. It was nice to have the oasis to ourselves. From 17 Palms we drove over to the Pumpkin Patch, in the Ocotillo Wells SRVA. On the way out we stopped for a picture in that cool, windy little wash that connects Arroyo Salado to Tule Wash. You couldn't have asked for better weather, especially for taking photos.

From the Pumpkin Patch we backtracked to right before S-22, then south on Ella Wash for about a mile to our lunch spot. Ella Wash is not listed in the off-road trail guides (other than the Lindsay guidebook to Anza Borrego), probably because it is just an easy one-mile wash. The views as it drops down from S-22 to Palo Verde Wash can be pretty good though. Our lunch stop - X marks the spot. Yes, we did stop in Santa Ysabel at the bakery. Our next stop was Vista del Malpais, for a great view across the Badlands. It's a similar view to that from Font's Point, but less visited. Here's a group picture at Vista del Malpais. Here's another one. From Vista del Mapais we took Short Wash to connect up with Font's Wash. We stopped in the narrow lower part of Short Wash to check out the miniature hoodoo rock formations. Font's Wash is pretty sandy this year compared to other times I've been there.

The views from Font's Point were good, and it was nowhere near as cold as I was expecting it to be. There were not a lot of colors in the general direction of the sunset on Saturday, I think maybe there were just too many thick clouds. Later on, more in the direction of the rising moon, it did get colorful. On the way north from Font's Point to S-22, as the sky started to get colorful. As we were airing up our tires the almost full moon was rising in the distance. The sky in that direction really was that color, by the way. A fun day, thanks again to everyone who showed up. There are more pictures in the gallery here.

Great Day Guy's and thanks for the pics. Cool to hang with everyone. Frank and Zach you had some amazing photos that I've saved. thanks much. I had 2 Vids from the blackberry again to share but one was too long to email.. the following is brief but gives a feel for the earlier part of the day.. Drop your volume if you watch this one.. The open air noise unexpected..
