How-To: 9004 HID conversion upgrade.

Just installed and HID conversion kit to my 2000 Xterra and it was very simple.  Paid $40 on ebay.com with shipping included for a Xentec kit.  Pics coming later.  This kit replaced the 9004 Halogen light bulbs.  No special tools or experience needed with the Xentec brand kit other than a multi-meter to identify 12V and ground.

Keep in mind that you will lose the high-beams since this particular kit has no provisions for them.  However the light output of these lights will render the high-beams useless anyways, so moving on.


1.  Remove 9004 lightbulbs from headlight socket, set aside.  Do not touch glass as they can be stored as backups or given away to other Nissan owners.


2.  Unpack contents of kit.  Should come with two (2) 9004 Conversion HID bulbs sealed, two (2) HID ballast with wiring harness, two (2) universal wiring harnesses with exposed probes, two (2) blank univeral 9004 male plugs, two (2) pieces of double-sided sticky foam tape, and some zip-ties.


3.  Attach univ. wiring harness with exposed probes on to the ballast.  The exposed side will be inserted into the blank univ. 9004 male plugs later.  At this point turn on the headlights, test for 12V power and ground on the FEMALE plug.  


4.  To test it, attach the exposed probes into the plug according to what voltage you read on the female side.  If you get the wires backwards, nothing will happen.  The systems has internal diodes which allow electricity to flow one way only.


5.  If the HID lights come on, turn headlight switch on and off.  If that works, then insert probes into the univ. blank 9004 male plug and button it up with the zip-ties and your done.


6.  Remeber that YOU MUST RE-ALIGN THE BEAM after the installation or you will blind oncoming drivers.  


7.  Now enjoy your new coolness.
