I had Monday off, and a couple of friends from the San Diego photo club joined me for some exploring in Anza Borrego. We left their car parked off of Hwy 78 and took the X to the lower entrance of The Slot hiking trail, by way of Buttes Pass Road to San Felipe Wash to Borrego Mountain Wash, until it gets too narrow to drive in. Borrego Mountain Wash starts out wide and sandy, then gets a bit rocky, and eventually narrow. It was pushing 80F out there by mid-day.

The actual Slot hike goes for about a mile, much of it through a narrow passage in the sandstone. It's best not to think too much about things like seismic activity, erosion, gravity, or being crushed to death by falling rock, while you're wiggling your way through it.

Here's a shot with Robert in it for scale.

I wonder how long before this column of sandstone collapses into the canyon?

The ocotillo are really green, and blooming too.

It's really green out there, this looks like it's going to be a really good year for wildflowers, probably starting in just a few weeks.

Great post. Ill be out there this Sunday as well.

Bruce, the same friends are planning to join Heather and I out there on Sunday as well. We're not sure where we'll go, it may not be all that far off the road, depending on the wildflower situation, and if we only have the one vehicle.  Do you have a specific plan for where you're going?
