OK guys . I am now in the market for either a jeep or a Gen2 Compliments of Farmers insurance.  I drove a couple of Gen2s today and I like them allot. I am aware of the usual after-market support or lack there of. Is there anything else I need to be aware of before I make a final decision.  I am stepping out of a Gen1 that to my sadness was mildly built compared to Brian but was capable. They had an issues with the sixth spark plug unless you name is Bobby but everything else was good.

The 2nd Gen truck is completely re-engineered from the first.

There's zero wrong with them in my opinion. I test drove the Toyota FJ and the Jeep - both were about 50% more expensive than the Off-Road model even with the Rockford Fosgate option on mine that I didn't want.

Chris,

If you're looking to build a rock-crawler, you're probably better off with a Jeep. But, it sure won't be all that comfortable on the road.  If you're looking for something that is a pretty good compromise, something for going out exploring, something capable off-road as long as you don't get too crazy, and really very comfortable on long road trips, then the Ge n 2 Xterra is great.

Like Paul, I've had no problems with mine.  Okay, we all know that I don't take mine anywhere near the kinds of places Paul has taken his, but still it has held up well.  They do have their quirks, but for what I use it for it works great.

While there might not appear to be all that much aftermarket support, compared to say Toyota, there is still enough. Shrock makes good proven armor, PRG has multiple lift and suspension options, and there are aftermarket roof rack systems if you have a lot of extra money lying around.

What is the fix for the tire pressure monitoring system when airing down?

There is no problem that I am aware of with the tire pressure monitoring system when airing down. I air my tires down quite often.  If you get an 05 they did have an audible alarm as well as the yellow light on the dashboard.  The alarm sounds a rather loud 30-second long tone for each tire that is low, up to 3 separate blasts.  Mine does that, it can be a bit unnerving for passengers in the truck who have never heard it before. For some reason they think they're going to die.

it's my understanding that the later models only have a light on the dash.

Are you looking at the 4-door Wrangler?  If so, can you fold the back area flat to get 6 feet of length where you can sleep (like you can in the X)?  If the 2-door, long road trips might not be as comfortable with that shorter wheelbase.

Don't forget to check the insurance rates!

I believe the Jeep is going to be a bit higher, given its higher nature of theft and break ins.  Not sure, but double check.

When I bought my 2005 used X, going from a 2 door coupe, my insurance rates (through GEICO) actually went down $120 a year.

Good luck, and I hope you make the right choice!  Wink

The other thing to keep in mind in regards to the 2nd gen is that if you want a locker on the 2nd gen you need the off road model.  If you get a manual transmission in any of the other trims they have the same differential as the off road and you can add an after market ARB locker.  The other models have the c200 differential for which there's no locker yet.

I'm not a fan of Jeep's as a daily driver.  Way too uncomfortable.

Overall the 2nd gen X is a better choice if you're looking for something that is not focused Primarily on offroading.

Price (especially used), engine power, ride, comfort, highway manners, etc all go to the X.

The rubicon JK is better offroad and the removable tops are the only Advantages over the 2nd gen that I can think of.
