problems with the X

My xterra was having trouble shifting gears.
It was idling high about 1500 rpms and wasn’t shifting gears till it hit 4-4500 rms.
I took it to a shop where they hooked-up the car to a computer.
The mechanic said I had a bad sensor (TPS)
Had no choice but to get it done the last thing I wanted to do was blow-out the motor or burn out the trans
$150 + parts
Was I had?
this included an oild chainge & filter as well as changing the fuel filter.
More to come...

Doesn't sound like too bad a price. I haven't had to replace one in the X yet but I did in my old Dakota. It was $98.00 I believe and I did the work myself. Then again, I did the same thing in a Ford Escort (89 baby!!!) and it was only about $20?

Was it a Shelby Escort? Man, those were sweet.

No, man Pinafarina Italian design. Doesn't sound like TPS to me. Does it accelerate slowly once the gear kicks in? If so, and If its an automatic tranny, it might be a burned 1st gear and its jumping straight to second or third gear. IMO, I feel a tranny rebuild or swap is in order, but then again, I don't have enough info from you yet.

The X runs great now.
The tachometer would be about 4500 before it shifted gears for all gears, not just 1st it just seemed to be a bit smoother after I got up in gears.
I freaked out because this happened soon after I gave my x a tune-up.
The check engine light came on and the x started to act like this.
