Ok, may have found a possible 4wd trans for the SAS/4wd swap i have on the table. Anyone know if there is any difference between the RE401A in a '92 Pathfinder and that of one in a '04 Xterra??? Any info would be great. Thanks!

VSS (Speed Sensor), wiring harness, valve bodies, Overdrive, and other stuff are different on the older auto transmissions.

I would look for a newer one, the older auto's (<95) had problems: starving for fulid at certain inclines level off road so people would over fill them and they proved to be not as durable as the 95+ ones.

The desgin changes in 95 and then again in 99 help, I would get one with the lowest mileage possible out of at least a 2000 model year.  Low mileage wrecks are the best option, the auto's wear out over time especially with the stock cooler,  if you can get ~200k out of one with a 4x4 you're lucky.    Both my autos in my 90' pathfinder (torque convertor) and 2000 X's (replaced in 2007)  needed to be rebulid or replaced with less than 150k, granted I did'nt get them until past 100k.

Are the cases the same??? Now, would the internals from the 2wd, besides the output shaft work with the 4wd case?? I am stretching i know, but can get this trans pretty cheap with hopes of going through it. Thanks for the input and reply.

Ok.....some info here. Did some cross refrence of the '93 trans to an '04 trans. Turns out the '93 trans output shaft is the same as an '04 4wd output shaft. The tailhousings are the same numbers as well. The valve bodies from a 2wd '04 xterra and a 4wd '04 xterra are the same. So all in all, by replacing the output shaft from my 2wd trans to an output shaft from a 4wd transmission and replacing the tailhousings i should have a 4wd transmission. This info applies to N/A transmissions, the S/C models have some different parts (bands are bigger and valve body is different than the N/A). So time to go get the tailhousing and t-case. Hope this info helps others out.
