I went with an Optima inside of a $9 plastic tool box, a $30 car stereo relay, and $30 worth of connectors and cable.
I ran a set of heavy gauge wires back from my battery fuse box to a location under the seat. The spare battery plugs into that. There's a high power relay that allows me to disconnect it, or connect it manually, or connect it automatically every time the truck charges. In I leave it in the mode where when the truck is running the relay drops and starts charging the aux battery once the truck starts. If I have to winch for a long period the winch will actually drain the battery faster than the alternator can power it. So I'll split (isolate) the two batteries, drain the one under the hood and then stop winching, connect the second battery to charge into the first one. After about 10 minutes I'll split the two and start with the under the hood battery. I can also split them and let the aux battery run my ham radio and freezer.
I can also lift the battery out and power my ham radio at a remote location as part of my RACES duty. We standardize on Anderson PowerPoles to allow us to connect to each other's gear.

The little switch lights those LEDs to give me a bit of never ending light. Inside the two compartments I keep spare fuses and assorted connection wires.
