Hi guys, i am new to the boards and have an '04 Xterra 2wd, looking to do the 4wd swap here and was wondering if it is easier to swap transmissions, or will the transfer case be able to bolt up to the transmission after removing the tailsection from the transmission, or are the output shafts from the 2wd different from the 4wd??  ???ANy info would be great. Thanks.

4wd output shaft is much shorter, 2WD is much longer, maybe possible but you will have to change shafts and it still most likey won't shift like it should (Shift logic is different on those tranny's) much easier to swap the transmission I would think plus I'm  not sure the internals will hold up to 4 wheeling.  Of course the Transmission crossmember is different so you will need that and a bunch of other stuff: wiring harness for the tcase, crossmember for that, etc,   All the parts will add up pretty fast, unless your going to SAS might be eaiser/cheaper to trade for a 4WD.?

This guy did a 4WD conversion:

X2.  Unless you're planning on throwing a solid axle under there and can do your own fab work, this will be a difficult and expensive project.

Not trying to dissuade you, mind you, but you should know what you're getting into.  If it's not your daily driver and you want to have fun and learn, go for it.

If i can find a trans and keep the front end mostly stock, shouldnt be that difficult. All the mounting points are there for the crossmember, and with all the guys going SAS, most parts are a plenty and not to pricey. So I guess best bet with the trans is to find one in a yard and see if they are willing for a trade for a 2wd + some cash maybe for the t-case. Any good yards locally???
