Lets try this:

(+12VDC Battery)----(fuse)-------------------|
                                                                |
(+12VDC)--------(switch) ----------------(relay coil)---------(ground)
                                          |                    |
                                          |                    |
                                        LED              (big lights)
                                          |                    |
                                          |                    |
                                     (ground)           (ground)

The first +12 VDC is a heavy gauge cable from the battery thru a fuse and to the input of the relay.
The second +12 VDC is a light gauge cable from either the battery or accessory source (stock fuse box), thru the switch to the relay's coil.

When the switch is closed electric power will flow thru it an to the right side of the circuit - to the LED and to ground causing the LED to light and though the relay coil causing it to be magnetized pulling the relay armature closed and connecting the heavy power source to the heavy load (big lights).

Make sure you check the votage on the LED, you might need to run resistors to the led switch so the light won't blow.  It happen to one of the switch I bought.

I finally got my lights hooked up!

I decided to go with Eagle Eye Slip Pro lights becuase they gave me 30% off MSRP.  The lights list at $95 a set, but I got two sets for $130 out the door (picked up).  I upgraded the fuse to 40 amps and ran the wiring through the roof.  The switch was the best part- it fit perfect next to my security light on the dash.

I can't wait to use them... hopefully this weekend.

WOW!  They look great when you have four.  I only have two and they look like Mickey Mouse ears.  Just waiting for a tax return to get the other two.

That's the hardest part.  I came though the roof rack and went down through the support foot.  I used a silicone sealant to keep it water tight (even though its contained in the roof rack housing).

I ran them down the front windshield post, through the fire wall, and to the battery. You can see I still have to add a little more tape to the cover.

This past weekend I headed out to Glamis to test my lights.  I came accross a $90,000 dune buggy that got stuck trying to pull a broken rhino.  I pulled both toys out of the dunes and towed the rhino all the way back to their camp.  The owner made the comment, "your going to do it with that."  I calmly replied, "its a xterra- you want someone else to help you out at midnight?"

After I drove back to my camp I went to turn off my roof lights and noticed the switch was warm.  The lights wouldn't go out so I pulled the fuse.  I installed a 40 amp relay, but I think the switch is rated for less.  Having the lights on for a few hours warmed the switch so it became inactive.

Now I have to re-install the fuse and test the switch.  I might need to get a 50 amp switch.

There shouldn't be much of a load across the switch.  Just enough to energize the relay.
