Calico 01/30/09 - 02/01/09

I know it's a busy month with a Joshua Tree run coming up and a mod day at Mitch's at the end of the month, but anyone who is interested to join a run up to Calico with the Rugged Rocks group 01/30/09 - 02/01/09 is welcome.  For those of you unfamiliar with Rugged Rocks it's an Off road and Communications site specializing in the development of off road after market parts for Nissan's.  I'll do my best to keep this post updated with specifics, but you can also find information here http://ruggedrocksoffroad.com/forum/index.php?topic=637.0

Anyone from San Diego interested in going let me know.  I plan on leaving on Friday morning sometime and we can caravan.

Campsite

 34°56'51.35"N, 116°50'13.91"W

Exit Calico off of I-15.  Head NW on Calico.  Turn right on Mule Canyon Rd.  Head up through the canyon past Phillips Dr. on the left.  Continue on Mule Canyon past East Phillips Dr. again on the left.  Campsite is about 0.2 miles past that point.

great to hear of the invitation.  Where exactly in California is that trail run going to be at?

It's just NE of Barstow past the I 15 and I 40 split.  I've attached a google maps location marker to my original post.

I don't think I'm going to attend.  I don't have sliders or a lift and I don't want to hold up the group.  Hopefully next time.

I am thinking of joining you guys, how rough do you anticipate the trail - I have 3" SL + 285 AT's, the rest stock (no sliders, no lockers). I noticed from some of the posts that a couple of the trails my be pretty difficult for my rig.  Trail options? Anyone with similar thoughts.

You should join us.  Your setup is very similar to a lot of the guys going.  trust me, none of us want damage either.  Check the new map I just posted in my original post.  It lays out the trails.  Where are you coming from?

The new attachment has a map overlay of all the calico trails for google earth along with the waypoints for phillips loop from the So. Cal Backroads book from funtreks. Camp is also marked on there. I'm thinking we'll start off with phillips loop, which is marked in green just west of camp. (actually rated as a moderate trail)

after phillips, i'm open to suggestions, but we can go check out doran, bypassing the gatekeeper and shortuctting out of the doran/odessa loop trail at the yellow trail at the farthest N of the map taking us east. and back to camp via Mule Cyn. or just go check out other stuff that is marked here.

Bring a Camera 
Bring lunch on the trail with you. 

It will be COLD this weekend, we're looking at lows in the 30's, so bring warm stuff, Highs are showing in the high 60's

I'm in! My 12 yr old son "Erik" and I will hook up with you at the Chevron @1:00. If we miss you somehow we will go to the campsite. I am bringing a couple of FRS radio's - what channel are you using? We will plan to spend Friday Nite and probably leave late Sat.
Is anyone else camping - I make a mean omelet!

I had a fun weekend up in Calico.  It was a pretty mild weekend as far as the off roading goes.  Decided to keep it a little low key since the funds are low and wouldn't want to have to fix anything right now.

Wow! Awesome pics Jeff! Looks like you guys had an awesome time!
Those pics really brought back memories. Looks like you guys went the other way (backwards) which is even more difficult. 

The cave/hole actually seems a bit bigger this time... more off-camber this time though. Hope everyone made it out of there unscathed.
