I have 2000 Xterra V6 with a 5spd 4 WD transmission.  Fixed a few other leaks on front, new seals, silicone and such but now I have a bad oil leak coming from the engine's rear main seal on the back of the motor.  I've never worked on a 4WD tranny before so I don't know how hard is it to take the transfer case off of it.  I heard that the tranny output splind just slides off.  Can anyone verify?

**Update:  Got it done in one weekend.  Ended up needing a rebuild on the Transmission plus the reverse idler gear, $1198.00 and three days.

I would mark the driveshaft flange with the reaar diff flange (for putting back in the same spot), and remove the t-case and transmission all as one unit after the driveshaft is removed (make sure to undo the shifters for easier removal, so they dont hang up on the interior). Also have a clutch alignment tool for re-installing/aligning the clutch to the flywheel after removal. And dont know when the last time you had replaced the PCV valve or not, but may want to do that too (excessive crankcase pressure has a tendency to cause the rear main to leak).

There's a sensor there too (crank trigger?) it can be easily damaged if you're not careful.
