Went to Kingman, AZ over Thanksgiving weekend for my kid brother's baby shower.  On the drive back Sunday afternoon, the O.E. Alternator decided to take a crap in the middle of the desert, in Ludlow, 40 miles east of Barstow.  With an OPTIMA red top battery in the engine bay & an ODYSSEY 1200 in the trunk, we decided to push on West along Hwy 40 calling every auto parts store that came up on our phones GPS search.  Since no one had it in stock we decided to continue until the battery gave out.  At which point, if the need arose we would swap batteries and push on.  We were able to go 116 miles to Fontana at a steady 70 mph with no lights on, the stereo and A/C off, in traffic with everyone coming back on the 15 fwy down the Cajon pass flashing their light at us.  We made it on the Optima battery all the way to the conrner by my house when it finally gave out & I cruised it into the driveway.  My wife & I kept thinking of movie Apollo 13 where the engineers kept trying to squeeze every ounce of battery juice.

It was one of a few things that I hadn't changed yet, so now, since my wife got to see how much of a hassle it was, I actually get to upgade to the Mean Green alternator.

Yikes have you done much swimming or mudding with your truck?

I REALLY wish that Nissan had mounted our alternators up higher.

Glad you made it home safe...cruising into the driveway of your home doesn't get much better though!

Please let us know where and for how much you get the Mean Green alternator for.

No, nothing hardcore.  In fact, I haven't really been driving it at all except for wfekends because I drive a company construction service truck to work everyday.  When I rebuilt the motor, I took the alternator apart, greased the bearings and checked the contacts and brushes, then tested it at Autozone.  I'm not going to sweat cause its not a daily driver right now.  I'm going to buy the Mean Grean alternator from RuggedRocks.com since Steve is just a few miles on the other side of the freeway from where I live.  $354.00 is not a bad price either.  No shipping since I would be a local pick up.  Has anyone had isrues with it?  Is it bolt on?

One of the guys over on thenewx.org had one in his second gen Xterra, and had some issues with it on the way to Moab last year.

The output was too much and triggered his SES light and some other electric issues.  I am not sure what he did to fix it, but if you search over there for ChrishaynesUSA (that is his screen name) you can either PM him or check out his build thread.  He would be more than happy to provide feedback.  Actually, I will PM him and get back to you.

I've got the 180A in my '04 and mounting it was pretty easy... well, I take that back. Let's just say that there is a hole in your engine bay that is big enough for an alternator. The area around it is not! So, some choice words are need for the swap but it is doable in about 30 mins or so. I seem to remember having to turn the alt a bunch of times to get it to fit between all the other crap around it?

Never had a problem with it but I do have a rather large stereo that CAN (and does) pull some serious amps. My lights still dimm a little but that's my fault not the alt.

I have my old stock/still working alt sitting in my garage if you need it, until you get yours in the mail. Don't know if you are near Yucca Valley or not but that's where I be.

If the stereo is doing that to your headlights, then you need a capacitor inline with the power cable going to the alternator.  I got the one from Walmart by Lightning Audio, 1/2 farad,  and it took care of the fluctuations on my system for $70.
Thanks for the offer but thankfully, I don't need to have my truck running.right now.  I got some big work to do on it so I'm going to park it and take it apart.

I've got two caps, one per amp, 3f each... MG 180A with 0G wire going from alt to batt to amp on both the power and ground side.
Well if you change your mind (or anyone else needs one) mine is sitting in the garage as a backup.
